Saints V Derby - First Half Thread

Really good stuff from us. I missed the start so didn't see the goal we conceded, but from what I've watched it's relentless. Chance after chance, some beuaitful football and a couple of fantastic saves from their GK.

They are literately hanging on and defending for their lives at times. If we keep this up and our fitness shows, we'll get something out of this game for sure.

"Robinson's strike gave Derby a dream start but since then it's been relentless pressure from Southampton"

Summary from the commentators... gutting that they managed to catch us cold at the start of the match, but I still reckon we'll come back and win in the second half.

That's a direct quote from a professional commentator, paid to know what he is on about, who is physically watching the game right this very second.

Alpine, I cannot believe for one second you are being serious with some of the things you've said in this thread.

Rubbish. You are seeing what you want to. I come on here whenever I can, but weekends are tough because two of my sons have their own teams and they play at the weekend.

Anyway, the whole "alpine only posts when we lose" scheme doesnt alter the fact we are really mid-table quality since we cannot beat the teams around us.

Oh, well, top was nice while it lasted..

Sorry but we have another 45-mins to turn this around, we've had a great header of the line one great save from their keeper & we are passing them to death. I have faith we can get at least a draw from this & as several have said, so far we are playing very well.

We're playing really well but Derby doing a fine job off the ball in closing us down. We obviously miss Lallana. I don't get many opportunities to watch Saints but on this occasion I have to admit that Chaplow frustrates me, he doesn't seem to have a reliable first touch...

Up until now he's been fine, no idea why his touch is suffering today.

Well you are watching it and are still clueless about where we are in terms of quality.

As far as I am concerned the excuses made against Cardiff and Leicester are invalidated today. This is 3 times a row now we have demonstrated an inability to get results where we will really need to

*cue straw-clutching comments about the game not being over, playing well and "on another day...just bad luck"

So let me get this right. You are making this statement after just 40 minutes of a game that you not actually watching? Is this correct?

Steve Frogatt on 5 Live extra, commentating, is convinced that Derby cannot keep this level of pressure up (particularly chasing down KD and back 4 when we are in possession) and that Saints will exploit gaps in second half, late on especially.

Also David Connolly used to refuse to have a mobile phone apparently.....how very twentieth century....

Great footballing first half but the game just underscores one of the few concerns I have about us - the danger that we can be very Arsenal-esque, with tons of beautiful build-up play but an inability to consistently end it with the "killer ball". So, tons of possession and pressure but not enough real chances and not enough goals.

We're still lovely to watch, though, and you can see why other teams fans rate us so highly.

Look, Alpine. Watch the damn stream and I will read your comments. Until you do, your comments are invalid.

What is invalid about saying we are incapable of getting results against our peer teams ? The facts support it.

Pretty football is absolutely meaningless if you cant put the ball in the net.

Oh, and great pre-match and international break preparation from the manager that the team come out half-comatose.........

This is only our 2nd game against the current top six, we comfortably won the first one and are totally dominating this one.

Get a life.

Oh dear

Great pressure from Southampton

Fantastic saves from the Derby Keeper

Goaline Scramble

Some superb football from Southampton

Alps - it is a NEUTRAL television commentator saying this, not us.

One of the main reasons we are still behind is that many of our chances are falling to Chaplow's RIGHT foot in the box. He is almost camped in their penalty area.

But he is winning far more ball when Derby break than a winger would.

Lallana has an ankle injury FFS how many of him are their in the world to buy as cover for when he gets a knock in training.

Alpine, if you'd been watching, you'd be convinced that we're going to turn this around. We're playing brilliantly, despite not having our best player due to injury.

From the way you always react, it seems to me like you don't want Saints to do well. You're far happier when we're losing as it gives you something to moan and be pessimistic about. After all, the facts support it.

He's right in some respects - the parts in bold ARE what I want to see.

OK I'll be Alpine.

If we lose, it will be because we can't beat our peers (whoever that may be), are poorly prepared and being top of the league was an illusion which our more stupid fans were fooledby.

If we draw, it will be despite ourselves and because we were facing a poor Derby team.

If we win, see comments for draw but add that this will only postpone the illusion for our more stupid fans that we have a good team and manager. We are clearly not good enough.

OK Alpine, no need for you to post anymore.
