Mikael Lustig

Interesting that his name came up just this week as I was watching, (along with half the nation) - the Euro match v. Holland

midweek and he was outstanding. Can't say the Dutch were off-form, they really made a match of it, but the new-look Swedish defence under manager Erik Hamrén really played the Dutch at their own game.

Only goalie Isaksson, Olov Mellberg, Kim Källström and Anders Svensson remain as familair names at the back, whilst a strike force had developed that can function without Milan star Zlatan (suspended).

Sebastian Larsson,(Sund.) Christian Wilhemsson,(ex-Prem.) and Johan Elmander (ex Bolton) battle away whilst the new names like Rasmus Elm and Ola Toivonen are fast becoming regulars.

Michael Lustig (pronounced like lusty but with a g-sound on the end) really stands out as a new star. Not overly tall, but he has good ball control, can tackle hard (without getting too many yellow cards) and plays well on the overlap.

CHDAJFU?..I think so...and I was as persuasive as Nigel Adkins can be, I'd take a second look at Toivanen too.

They are both still young and we need to remember the old adage when getting foreign players..." BUY 'EM IN PAIRS !"

PREMIERSHIP ...you can't have too small a squad and he'd be a good complement to Richardson next season, especially as Buttefield is only on a 1 year contract.

Even though Frazer has been fantastic this season so far, we could still do with a new right back

Seems like a bit of a contradiction to me - getting new players for the sake of it is a bad route to go down (again).

I can see Richardson being the top RB in the league if he continues this form.

I don't disagree, but it's the next league UPWARDS we have to plan for ..Lustig is already an international, and a very promising one.

Shouldn't we be selling rather than buying then?

I`ve watched him a lot on Norwegian telly, probably seen well over half of Rosenborgs matches this season. He is no-where near Richardsons level. The Norwegian PL this year is the poorest ever, not one of the teams would stand any chance of survival in the Championship.

The fact that Lustig still hangs about here, suggests that he isnt very good. He looks allright going forward, but is a huge liability defending. Plus he is weak, skinny and not a tackler by any means ! He has got a reasonable cross on him though, but in my (well informed) opinion he would be useless for Saints.

But his hair (and beard) are reasonable

  • 4 weeks later...
Used to get a good slap from the old man for calling teamtalk and clubcall on the sly when I was younger.

I called a couple of chat lines once and got the itemised phone bill and the calls had terminated in Tuvalu and Haiti. 30 quid each.

Looked a vey average player against England. Done for pace several times and was substituted early in the second half.

To sum up no better on this showing than the players we have already.

quite a few players looked pretty average, and not just in the Swedish side either. However, I thought Englanda midfield was poor but I was impressed by the English full-back pairing though.

Downing is a very experienced player, if a winger can't beat his man often enough...he ought not to be playing in the side.

It wasn't just Lustig who was subbed. did you see that both sides changed out and new manager Hamren tried out at least half a dozen other players in the second half.

The idea of friendlies is try out new players / formations. Getting a result is fine, but it's the way to discover new players.

I would have thought with the chances that England had they should have got a few more goals ..as it was the Swedish defender headed the ball past his own keeper for the goal.

If I was Capello I'd be worrying where I could find an alternative strike force (without Rooney) for when England play some real opposition in the Euro competition.
