Do you need 3G on an I-pad

I'm thinking about getting one as they are proving to be quite handy at work. I will also be using it when I'm not at work and so was wondering if you need one with 3G as well as wi-fi? Someone mentioned to me that you can connect it to your phone/phone account with O2 and access it via hotspot?

 

Has anyone any views/experience on this?

Depends on your phone and your deal with the network. I can wirelessly tether my tablet with my android phone with no issues. Works really well. Not all networks allow tethering with all contracts though. Three do.
