forever a red and white Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Not saints related but very much football related and well worth a read: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/oct/11/aston-villa-30-mile-rule Saints have the host family thing, but will be interesting to see if other clubs follow this example. Tony F Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 They will not be offered that new or extended contract; simples. (does not apply retrospectively to players already on contract)
hamster Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 "Under the rule Villa players signing new or extended contracts will be required to live within a 30-mile radius" It's a silly idea to my mind, unnecessary and pointless.
sandwichsaint Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Always a good read that Barney Ronay. Really struggled for his first couple of seasons but the guardian stuck with him and now the lad does good every week. Read his football managers book if you get the chance, a very original and readable take on that topic. Back on message, haven't Cheksea been doing this for quite some time and prob in a smaller radius too? I agree with it, makes a lot of sense to cut down on excessive travelling from a R and R perspective.
VectisSaint Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 And if they refuse? They will be asked to leave the bus at the next request stop. Nothing wrong with the idea, the prospect of players commuting more than 30 miles a day for training is patently ridiculous, commuting is not good for athletes. 30 miles radius is perfectly adequate, only problem we have is much of the area within 30 miles is under water. Still a daily commute from Ventnor would be an interesting prospect for a player with his own decent fast boat.
hamster Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 But 30 miles including a cross London drive is miles different from a 30 mile dash down the M1.
CB Fry Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 "Under the rule Villa players signing new or extended contracts will be required to live within a 30-mile radius" It's a silly idea to my mind, unnecessary and pointless. Completely disagree. Great rule and I hope Saints adapt something similar. The likes of Pires and Nigel Reo-Coker commuting to the midlands every day is ridiculous - yes it's possible but creates not a shred of affinity from player to club or area, and reinforces the here today, somewhere else tomorrow attitude. And if players want to play the family card, fine. Don't sign for a club in the midlands then. Football players, especially in the Premier League, are, in the main, a bunch of greedy, selfish, thick as pig shi t c *nts. Forcing them to live in something approaching the area the club is based in seems like a bare minimum for the £60 odd grand they're pulling down a week. Well done Villa. hamster Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Spose 30 miles still gives them a decent set of options.
hamster Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Might be able to rent our place to a Saints player on the plus side....or a Bompey/Skate.
eelpie Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Aston Villa's 30 mile radius covers one of the most densely populated conurbations in the country. Ours is minute in comparison. Good idea, but we would be enormously disadvantaged compared to clubs in London, the midlands and Lancashire.
Hamilton Saint Posted 14 October, 2011 Share Posted 14 October, 2011 (edited) Good idea. Now, how about a variation on the rule: you can only play for the club if you were born within a 30-mile radius of its stadium! Or: you can only support a club if you live within a 30-mile radius of its stadium! Edited 14 October, 2011 by Hamilton Saint grammatical
paulwantsapint Posted 14 October, 2011 Share Posted 14 October, 2011 Do we have any players who don't live within 30 miles of staplewood If we do are they players looking to relocate to within 30 miles

Personally I'd rather live in the New Forest than within 30 miles of the centre of Liverpool, but then I suppose I don't have the desire to spend my leisure time 'on the lash' in clubs until 4.00am. This is where Chelsea put all their new signings and a lot carry on living here. I see Ramires, Lukaku and Juan Mata on an almost daily basis. Used to see Torres as well but pretty sure he has moved. Whilst Imperial Wharf is walking distance to Stamford Bridge, I'm pretty sure it would take longer than 30 minutes to get to their Cobham training ground. Could be wrong though. Who said anything about 30 mins? Cobham is less than 20 miles from Imperial Wharf / Stamford Bridge. Plus I don't think there'd be an issue of ties to the community if the players are living within spitting distance of the ground!

Good idea, but we would be enormously disadvantaged compared to clubs in London, the midlands and Lancashire. We have the advantage of living in God's own country down here. Villa players have got places like Wolverhampton, Tamworth, Telford and Bromsgrove to choose from, not the New Forest, Winchester, Salisbury or even Chichester. kwsaint Posted 14 October, 2011 Share Posted 14 October, 2011 The idea is nothing new. Graham Taylor made all the Watford players live in the local area in the eighties. Reducing commuting time makes complete sense, as well as increasing community links. Are any of the current squad making long commutes to get to training?
