Colinjb Posted 12 October, 2011 Share Posted 12 October, 2011 I shall be enjoying a long weekend on the Island with my better half and the 3 year old. I need ideas to keep us occupied...... Saintsweb, I am at your 'mercy.'

alpine_saint Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 the only thing I could think of doing with my better half on the IOW in October is somewhat prevented by the presence of children. The IOW is so f**king boring that when we went during the summer, we stayed long enough to have a sandwich. We mainly went for the ferry trip across the Solent. Jillyanne Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Check online if places of interest for kids are still open (Flamingo World, Robin Hill, Rookley Country Park, Sandown Zoo, Alum Bay, Donkey Sanctuary etc) Plenty to do and see on the IOW without getting bored imho! ecuk268 Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 I lived there for 9 years. The natives are........different. Great in the summer as you get to know where to go to avoid the holidaymakers. Deadly in the winter like most small seaside resorts.
Petersfield Saint Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 If you're taking the car over then just pick up one of the free Island magazines onboard for ideas. Plenty to do all year round; I love the place!

Chez Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 my advice is to get the ferry over, once landed immediately join the queue to come straight back. If you are lucky there will be room on the same boat. HTH

hamster Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 See what speed you can get up to on the island's only dual carriageway (iirc); Cowes Road which changes into Newport Road to fool themselves that they have 2 dual carriageways. Do the IOW equivalent of the 3 peaks challenge, see how long it takes to drive around all 3 prisons. Ryde sea-front is quite nice at this time of year as the sun goes down and the lights start to twinkle on the distant horizon. Take a trip on the Island railway, they use old London Underground rolling stock. Osbourne House is actually very very nice but take the time to walk down to Victoria's Grandkids little playhouse, you will be very impressed and your little girl will want you to build her one to match as soon as you get home. Seriously is impressive, each kid had their very own miniature wheelbarrow and garden tools to use in the garden. Go.
Baj Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Needles/Alum Bay, Dinosaur Museum, Sandown pier, shanklin sea front, the downs, ryde esplanade, osborne house, carisbrooke castle, amazon world, robin hill, blackgang chine, drive the south west coast, shanklin chine, st catherines point, sandown zoo. If you can't find something to do, you're not looking hard enough ! (but then again, I'm an islander born and bred so I'll stick up for the place )

hamster Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 True story. Me and the first mrs h went to the IOW for our honeymoon. Did the usual stuff for the first couple of days then ventured out to 'discover' the magic of the Island. If you find it Colin please post the location. hamster Posted 13 October, 2011 Share Posted 13 October, 2011 Am I right in saying that there was a propensity for middle-aged divorced women from the IOW to marry Massai Mara warriors not so long ago?

1976_Child Posted 17 October, 2011 Share Posted 17 October, 2011 Has anyone mentioned Carisbrooke Castle yet? A proper old castle. Charles First was held there before his head was lopped off. And it has a very cute donkey which turns a wheel which does something. Think it lifts water from a well.
