Have you been to one team's old/new grounds?

My dad was saying quite a lot of the grounds he used to go visit in the 70s/80s aren't there anymore, got me thinking I don't think I've been to a ground that is now not there.

Anyone on here been to a ground which is now not there and also been to that team's new ground? How does it compare?

The only old grounds I've visited are;

Ninian Park

Withdean

Maine Rd

Highbury

Wembley

Not too bad for a lad in his mid-twenties. Ninian used to be my favourite ground, their new one is horrible. Man City's new ground looks nice but still, it's no Maine Rd. The new Wembley, don't get me started on that soulless bowl. As for the Emirates, with their ridiculous seats, it feels more like being at the theatre or cinema.

I've yet to visit Brighton's new ground but sounds as if it's another Colchester, stuck out in the middle of nowhere with nothing of any interest around it.

Personally only a few and I can't remember that much about the old ones now...

Very few new places stand out for me, whereas old grounds had a bit of character, even if they were **** in other ways. Newer places may develop that but it only comes with time.

Elm Park / Madejski

Maine Road / COM Stadium

Baseball Ground / Pride Park

Filbert St / Walkers

Highfield Road / Ricoh Arena

Oh! I forgot about Wembley/New Wembley!

I saw us when we beat Mexico.

I guess some of us will have seen Saints play at both Wembleys.

I wonder how many teams have played at both Wembleys and the Millennium Stadium? One for the stattos amongst you....

Saints, united, Wales, England, arsenal,

I knew Saints would be in the list but there must be a few more than that surely. Has no-one been in a play-off final recently and been in a cup final previously or something? If not, we find ourselves amongst a distinguished crowd.

Used to go to Highfield Road a lot, used to be good there, a decent bit of atmosphere, not a long walk from town and the various pubs. Compared to the Ricoh Arena it was just better in every respect for a fan. (Aside from the filly things such as toilets, queues, leg room...... You know, the things that make it just another sterile shed.)

These lists of old stadia like Highfield Road, Baseball Ground, The Dell, Maine Road, Filbert Street and many others bring back good memories primarily for atmosphere. They all seemed to encapsulate their club, have something individual about them, you'd recognise them, whether they were good or bad, they had some character. And fastforward to Saturday, when we're playing at St Mary's in Derby, having already lost at St Mary's in Leicester, St Mary's in Cardiff, and with a trip to St Mary's in Middlesbrough to come.
surely it is the people that make the club, not 4 old stands..?

Been to a few old grounds but the only old\new comparison is Reading. I'd say the new stadium was much better but the location was terrible.

Old - or old style - ground list is:

Arsenal

Reading

Saints

Man Unt (with the open section)

Coventry

Spurs old layout

Chelsea (dog track layout)

Bournemouth

Norwich (old style away end)

Colchester

Overall whilst the new grounds are definitely more comfortable I do feel that it has been at the cost of atmosphere, the baby got thrown out with the bathwater IMO.

Only Leicester and Southampton are in the New and Old club for me, but quite a few that no longer exist -

Highbury, Burnden park, Goldstone ground, EastVille, Highfield rd, Maine rd, Monor Ground, Elm Park, Victoria Ground and Plough Lane plus Old Wembley.

Do Newport county still plat at The County Ground? That could be another on the list.

Blimey been to lots too!

Arsenal, Bristol Rovers, Bolton, Brighton, Coventry, Colchester, Derby, Leicester, Man. City, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Southampton, Wembley. Really can't think of any others but some grounds have changed dramatically Chelsea for example.

Many of the old stadiums had edge, terracing is a great memory and somehow made football feel more working class. Looking at some of the new locations out of town centres make for less drinking time and more expensive parking.

Football is easier to watch in the new stadiums - but some of them are soulless lumps of steel & concrete!

Goldstone

Ayresome Park

Elm Park

Burnden Park

Highfield Road

Filbert Street

Ninian Park

Gay Meadow

The Dell

Wembley

Eastville

Roker Park

Boothferry Road Hull's Old Ground

Layer Road Colchester

Plough Lane

Many happy memories of days out to these places, Ayresome Park was always Cold even on the day KK scored to put us top of the top flight for the first time in the club history.

The world of football has changed and mostly for the better or course we can take a trip back in time when we visit the 19th century at Fratton

Used to go to Fratton Park in the 70s, heard it was now a rubbish tip, do they have a new ground?

Does Church Litten and St Georges Park count?

Seriously Elm Park/Madjeski and old/new Wembley, not forgetting The Dell/SMS. Before anyone suggests it The Antelope was just a bit before my time.

I thought this would be a small list but there seems to be 19 club teams who have played a competitive match at both Wembleys and the Millennium stadium. These are...

Arsenal

Chelski

Man U

Southampton

Millwall

Birmingham

Tottenham

Sheffield U

Leeds

Reading

Stoke

Cardiff

Bristol C

Swansea

Blackpool

Huddersfield

Grimsby

Bristol R

Cambridge U

This is what avoiding actual work gets you...

Been to:

Old Stoke

Both Colchesters

Both Arsenals (if Bruce Springsteen counts!)

Old Brighton (Goldstone)

Old Leicester

Both Coventrys

Both Wembleys

Old Wolves (before they turned the pitch 90)

Both Saints

A lot of stadiums have also been transformed out of all recognition from their 'original' configurations which included standing terraces to all-seater so that even though they are in the same physical location they are effectively 'new', Chelsea being perhaps the biggest example.

On that basis I would add

Old Spurs, new Spurs

Old Highbury, new Highbury

ditto Chelsea

ditto West Ham

ditto Villa Park

ditto West Brom

ditto Wolves

Palace when it used to be a massive terrace at the Holmesdale Rd end

As for the OP, the main difference between the old grounds and the new is that you see far less wee on the floor these days.

i really don't think people can claim grounds like white hart lane, they still play at the same ground which has evolved in the model of the original, like the Dell did over the 100 years. Just because they have built different stands it is still the same ground.

Agreed, in order for it to be classed as an old ground, it now needs to be a block or flats, or totally derelict with grass growing on the terraces.
