hamster Posted 9 October, 2011 Posted 9 October, 2011 Very interesting programme on right now. Understanding the brain function (of the ganglia) that makes tourrettes people swear. I don't recall knowing of it until about 10 years ago, hopefully one day sufferers will be accepted without ridicule and embarrassment. Why do we swear?
hamster Posted 9 October, 2011 Author Posted 9 October, 2011 There showing those ****ing skates now! For ****'s sake.
hamster Posted 9 October, 2011 Author Posted 9 October, 2011 Euphemisms? Never heard of Rose Cottage before and mrs h works in the General. I shall ask her about it when she gets home.
hamster Posted 9 October, 2011 Author Posted 9 October, 2011 Read about 'polari' a few years back, very interesting how it was born and evolved. Mix of backslang and Roamni.
tpbury Posted 10 October, 2011 Posted 10 October, 2011 Think a Morrissey album was 'Polare Parade' - very Kenneth Williams
SuperMikey Posted 10 October, 2011 Posted 10 October, 2011 Read about 'polari' a few years back, very interesting how it was born and evolved. Mix of backslang and Roamni. I learned about Polari when I was doing my A-level in English Language, it's a fascinating story. Amazing how polari words have permeated into our everyday language too - take 'naff' for example. The whole series of Fry's Planet Word has been great so far, just the kind of programming that we should be getting on the BBC I think.
Deano6 Posted 10 October, 2011 Posted 10 October, 2011 Think a Morrissey album was 'Polare Parade' - very Kenneth Williams You're thinking of the song "Piccadilly Palare", or the album Bona Drag, which is "nice outfit" in Polari.
