Settling an argument?

Town fan here

Did you lot play 442 in the most part last season with two proper wingers, either Lallana, Puncheon, Do Prado or Chamberlain?

Also, is Lallana more of a wide midfielder/winger than central midfielder?

:smug:

Many of our lot will tell you we did. But it was more subtle and fluid than that more of a 4-2-2-1-1

One of the strikers was playing "on the shoulder" of the CB's with the other dropping into space - often out wide (Shearer used to do something similar)

The "wide men" weren't line hugging wingers but cut inside and made the extra attacker turning it into almost a 4-3-3 at times So unlike many "less intellgent" formations you are right tos ay we set up in 4-4-2 but the wide men & strikers were far more fluid

Lallana is of course a CB.

8)

He isn't a true winger, being right footed playing on the left he is more often seen cutting inside into the corner of the box than looking to beat a player on the outside, likewise Guly on the right is more an old fashioned "Inside Forward" who plays out wide and has (batter) tracking back skills and engine

We play many systems tbh. One reason we don't miss Chambo is.because he was very 1 dimensional and didn't suit adaptive strategies. Punch was, to some, a better squad option having more strength. Problem was, he would rarely pass and he.couldn't shoot as well. Disruptive too off the pitch.Adam is an amazing player who owns the whole left side of the opponents half. Adam is a proper winger, one of the top 10 in the country imho. But what do I know.

Not much if you think Chamberlain was one dimensional! :)

From what I've seen we tend to start 2-3-1-1-2-1 and switch to 1-2-3-2-1-1 around the 70 minute mark (i.e. when leading). I've seen us flirt with 0-1-0-2-2-3-2 at times as well. My god I'm funny.

Not that ridiculous. Under Poortvliet we were supposedly playing 4-2-1-2-1

Most stupid I ever saw IIRC was a newspaper review of a Man City game some years ago that gave their line up as 4-1-1-1-1-1-1

It's not the formation that matters - it's knowing what Saints don't want to do now now ... before it happens :D

Worth mentioning that we occasionally played with Guly theoretically on the right but in practice leaving a huge hole down the right wing as he played so narrow. Rochdale and Leyton Orient away spring to mind.

We did also play with Hammond and Schneiderlin as holding midfielders on occasion in a 4-2-3-1 with Guly in the hole, and 4-3-3 at Brighton.

But I'd say a straight 4-4-2 with Lallana and Chamberlain wide would have been our preference if the new Gooner hadn't been injured for months on end.

Lol at reference to "town". Which town based club are you reffering to?

Lallana isn't a wide man, he's just been put there over the last few years and has adapted well. I prefer him in the tip of the diamond in the middle where he can penetrate the middle of defences.

Pilkington in the username and question referring to last season suggests Huddersfield.
