Big_Bald_Si Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 lol at Leon Best and Jake Thomsen being on there
CFSFC Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Tbf Leon best has scored 10 premier league goals. Not bad at all.
Saint Stimp Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 lol at Leon Best and Jake Thomsen being on there Leon Best didn't exactly set the world ablaze for us but he's developed into quite a player. Many on this forum seem incapable to accept it though.
Colinjb Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 And to think that West Ham fans have the audacity to keep refering to themselves as 'The Academy.' Over the last few decades our track record is surely on a par with ANY side in the country, even Manchester United.
doddisalegend Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Wonder how much money we made from that lot? I make it 23.5 million from the five transfer fees mentioned in that article alone.

bug187 Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Isn't it about 44 million we've made in sales since early 2000s?
doddisalegend Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 (edited) Isn't it about 44 million we've made in sales since early 2000s? and we still went into admin, though in hindsight that has turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to us. Edited 6 October, 2011 by doddisalegend
farawaysaint Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Tbf Leon best has scored 10 premier league goals. Not bad at all. At a goal every 3 games, he's doing quite well for himself yes.
Matthew Le God Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 lol at Leon Best being on there Leon Best is a regular for the team that is currently 4th in the Premier League.
Um Bongo Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Leon Best is a regular for the team that is currently 4th in the Premier League. While I don't doubt Best has some ability, I would suggest that says more about the Premier league at this point in time rather then Best.
SuperMikey Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 So from that team you would get... ---------------------POKE------------------ CRANIE---------BAIRD-----MILLS-----BRIDGE CHAMBO-----SURMAN-----OAKLEY------BALE -----------WALCOTT------BEST------------- Buy in a GK, RB and CM and I reckon that's a very strong Prem team there.
Matthew Le God Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Why does league placing matter at this stage? Could have listed a Blackpool or Hull striker early on in the last couple of seasons and said similar. It's meaningless. If they finish 4th with him as their regular striker, brilliant. But I don't think you believe they will. Okay, him just being a regular for any Premier League team in itself shows he is an academy product of note and not one to "lol" at for his inclusion.
eelpie Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 While I don't doubt Best has some ability, I would suggest that says more about the Premier league at this point in time rather then Best. So we'll walk it then.
Saint 76er Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Isn't it about 44 million we've made in sales since early 2000s? TBH I'm still wondering where the 44 million went. Certainly we never spent anything like that on incoming players but still managed to go bust. Sure there would have been operational costs, but gate, tv etc should have covered those. At the time I calculated around 50 million in transfer fees and do seem to recall the FL querying an alleged shortfall of 40 million, but not surprisingly they never followed up on that. I think most of our supporters were stunned how we suddenly went into admin out of the blue and all over a 4k cheque bouncing I think. Hell, why didn't Lowe just pay that out of his pocket (let alone out of the above quoted 44 mill) to save the apparent 1.5 mill in share value he walked away from? Very strange business that administration situation was and nearly cost us our club. We are so lucky to have escaped from that. Academy's great though ....
VectisSaint Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 And all that without the previous generation, Shearer, Le Tiss, Wallaces and so on. Oaks is now at Exeter of course, tend to think of him as previous generation, not the same setup as Cranie, Mills, Bale and so on. Also ignores some of the other young talent that was not strictly in the Academy such as Kenwyne Jones. Still we all know Wenger is the master at spotting talented youngsters, not Southampton, so this must be all a load of made-up nonsense.
Crab Lungs Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Leon Best didn't exactly set the world ablaze for us but he's developed into quite a player. Many on this forum seem incapable to accept it though. Absolutely agree there... always liked Best, but if TSW doesn't rate you...

He's scored a few, but so have many others from lower leagues I wouldn't have thought would make it that high, like Campbell, Taylor-Fletcher, Jason Roberts. If he's worth decent money now, then even Shipperley would have been worth a few million back in the day, and he was ****. For skill, I reckon Best was top of the pile for that group of teenagers. Temperament was suspect and that did hold him back. It would come as no surprise if one season he makes a big leap forward, he's got it in him.
S-Clarke Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Pleased for Best, always felt he had ''something'' but our management under him was utter ****e, so we'd have never found it. Did well at Cov and has developed into a pretty handy CF at premiership level. Good to credit the quality of the coaches for that to be honest...
Smirking_Saint Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Absolutely agree there... always liked Best, but if TSW doesn't rate you... This unfortunately. Thought he was a good player, was strong, gave his all and had a decent enough eye for a goal. That own goal sealed his doom though, even though it was more Davies bully boy tactics that did it.
Fan The Flames Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 For skill, I reckon Best was top of the pile for that group of teenagers. Temperament was suspect and that did hold him back. It would come as no surprise if one season he makes a big leap forward, he's got it in him. When Best was coming through he was really talked about and no one really mentioned Walcott, but of course Walcott's achievements in the first team dwarfed Best's.
Minsk Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 When Wigley was forced to start best and Blackstock against Everton? (IIRC) I can recall watching and thinking that Best would have the better future of the two. In fact, I posted just that a few times on previous incarnations of this site. However, I was firmly in the minority. This became even more so after Dex kept a clean sheet for 10 minutse in goal and Leon unwittingly deflected the ball into his own net (followed by missing a penalty he should never have been allowed to take). Well, both are still young so there is still time for either of their careers to take a turn for the better or worse; time will tell. In the meantime, I am absolutely certain that many people on here do not judge players by their ability just on whether they like them or not. Oh, and not just players but managers as well. Where is St Lard and his Adkins bashing friends?
The Kraken Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 Where is St Lard and his Adkins bashing friends? Good point; Lard seems to have gone very quiet of late. Can't think why?
Saint Fan CaM Posted 6 October, 2011 Posted 6 October, 2011 What about Kenwyne Jones also? I was sure he came out of our Academy and he's been playing Prem football for sometime now.

Lazlo78 Posted 7 October, 2011 Posted 7 October, 2011 I did a fairly extensive compilation of Saints youth in this thread: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?31876-SFC-Youth-Academy-currently-active-professional-players
