SuperMikey Posted 6 October, 2011 Share Posted 6 October, 2011 Real shame to hear of his passing, he seemed like a great bloke and did a lot of work for charity too. Hard to think of many more people in the 20th and 21st century who have had a greater influence on western culture than he did. RIP.

pedg Posted 6 October, 2011 Share Posted 6 October, 2011 Its sad he as died but personally I don't buy the genius line. He was very driven, very persuasive and very smart, especially when it came to deals that benefited himself, but he made a hatful for bad decisions in his businesses and was incredibly lucky. For example he only bought pixar for their long forgotten hardware that was a commercial failure, only visited the animation people about once a year and even tried several times to sell them off before Toy Story came out and Toy Story itself came very close to never being made. He also come across a not being a very nice person at times. It always seams odd to me that he is somehow considered a hero against Bill Gates villain when it appears jobs was much more of a mercenary and how little good he has done with his fortune compared to Gates. pedg Posted 6 October, 2011 Share Posted 6 October, 2011 (edited) he was a great designer not a great inventor.....according to something I listened too He was not the great designer but, to his credit, he did KNOW a good design when he saw one. The design for the iMac had been kicking round apple for years before he got back in charge. If he did have a touch of genius it was that he could spot a good design and drive people to improve it but by himself, from scratch, his designs have not been great, e.g. the NeXT computer which was a complete commercial failure. Possibly his greatest gift to the world was that he did spot the advantages of the GUI and ripped it off from Xerox when the engineers there that developed it just thought it was cool. badgerx16 Posted 6 October, 2011 Share Posted 6 October, 2011 Jobs was like Bill Gates, good at the commercial exploitation of other peoples ideas, and zealously litigating at the merest hint of a patent infringement. His particular gift was in creating apparently new niche markets and positioning his products as the life changing 'must have' that would make you wonder how on Earth we ever managed without them. All the overblown hype that surrounds the launch of the latest 'i'Gadget has never ended up curing cancer, ending famine, or solving the issues in the Middle East. alpine_saint Posted 6 October, 2011 Share Posted 6 October, 2011 RIP, a visonary has been lost. Now watch Apple go tits-up. Samsung are sharpening the knives in the patent tit-for-tat (you might never be able to buy an iPhone4S if they have their way), and the absence of the "new idea" iPhone5 this week, in conjunction with no iPod updates for ages, is a huge message... tony13579 Posted 6 October, 2011 Share Posted 6 October, 2011 I think some of you are so wrong! I had an early HTC on windows mobile. The music player was difficult. There was no app store to buy thousands of apps that work. You did not get a free upgrade of software as it was released. The directory fantastic. All the relevant programs integrate with it. The iPad changes the way I use computers at home. Installing software is a breeze compared with windows. Apple made the tablet work. Windows supports touch screens but they don't embrace it. My PC is only used for work stuff now. The iPod still is bette and more functional than all other MP3 players. iTunes is better functioning than any other music store. I prefer to own a CD. But if you want to buy a track it is revolutionary to try a sample, choose the best version of the song and buy it for 79 or 99p I don't know where Apple is going next. I don't know how with out a change in battery technology you can improve the iPhone. But the team assembled have done a fantastic job. I have great respect for the man and his achievements. But, for such a 'genius' his type of Pancreatic cancer was treatable, yet he decided to use Alternative Medicine until it was too late. Probably cost him ten years of his life. What type of pancreatic cancer did he have? My grandmother died from pancreatic cancer and the death rate is high because it's notoriously difficult to treat, chemotherapy and radiation of little benefit. RIP Steve Jobs, who started his entrepreneurial life defrauding the phone company and ended up making billions with Apple. I heard (in the times) the iphone5 will come out late 2012/early 2013. How they know is anyone's guess!
