Stud mark of doom Posted 3 October, 2011 Share Posted 3 October, 2011 All this talk of music at matches and Arsenal reminded me of the post FA Cup Final 'entertainment' provided in Cardiff. Music blaring at us at full volume, as I recall. We comfortably outsung the victorious supporters, disappointed at 'only' winning the cup, but the recorded music was a different proposition altogether. That was an absolute disgrace. I am still mad about it. Grrrr.
hamster Posted 3 October, 2011 Share Posted 3 October, 2011 Bring back the "Easy, Easy, Easy, Easy" chant with the overhead hand clap. Not so easy with big foam hands though.
Hamilton Saint Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 (edited) Firstly, it's what Mickey Mouse teams do. You don't see the big teams farting choons through their public address system. Secondly, it shows a lack of respect to the opposition, especially as away goals are never given any fanfare. It's classless pettiness. If other teams want to do it, let them, and we'll mock them for being the scumbag peasants they are. We are Southampton. We're better than this. It also shows a lack of respect for the intelligence, feelings and passion of the fans. We know if we've scored, we're more than capable of making our own noise and I haven't seen a single person on here defend it. You talk about respect for the opposition but say this about Blackburn fans: "they don't really understand what football is". Not a very consistent attitude, is it? But I do agree with your point about playing music after goals. It's a bad idea. Let the fans respond. They don't need pumping up and prompting by the PA system. Not a very consistent attitude, is it? You got me bang to rights on that one, Inspector Hamilton Saint I do hope you'll consider the following evidence before passing judgement. a) it was tongue-in-cheek b) Ewood Park was the first ground I'd heard this at, some years ago, while we were in the Prem. Their PA announcer also wouldn't shut up that day. c) Venkys [video=youtube;v6euXX-pkCA]
stinhk Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 Of all the things to make their way across the Atlantic, one thing that really annoys me is when clubs play a snippet of a song after the home team scores a goal. I first saw this up at Ewood Park. Thought it was pretty sad at the time, but forgave the Blackburn fans because they don't really understand what football is. Now, it has been a long time since I've been to a home game, but I understand that we play Blur's Song 2 after we score at St. Marys. I think the whole idea is a bit low-rent, and detracts from the only important noise - the sound of the fans. What are your views? I didn't know that. The9 Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 I absolutely despise it. It is the only subject I have ever actually written a letter of complaint to anyone about. Unfortunately for me, my email to David Luker in 2008 was sent approximately 12 hours before Saints went into Admin. The best part of course, is that I never, ever have to hear it at St Mary's, because the roar of the crowd is much louder and longer than the noise where my seat is. The9 Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 I think Bolton had music after goals before Blackburn - they also had people running up and down the touchline waving flags when it happened. Circa 2001/2-ish when they'd just got up into the Prem via the Play-offs. I think the first time I heard it was when we lost to them late on in the League Cup ? Blur's Song 2 is literally my favourite single ever, it's entirely consistent with the mood when it's played, and I still don't want to hear it when we score. Cardiff and football just don't go - the same tannoy announcer Cardiff have at their ground is used for Wales matches, which are a cacophony of plastic horns, fireworks, high-tempo dance music and the announcer desperately trying to get people into it because (from back when they got 73,000 crowds and it cost £10 to get in) they patently just don't give a crap. They've been doing that since about 2003 as well.
The9 Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 (edited) What I'd like is something I've seen when I went to see Frankfurt. The first name is announced and then the crowd shout the surname. Sounded very good! Arsenal have been doing that for about 3 years now, if not longer. Along with a lot of the Bundesliga. The9 Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 My guess would be that it comes out of the same speakers as the PA system so wouldn't have thought so. Although maybe the PA system sounds worse in certain areas?!?.... That's true, pretty much the only place you can hear the PA in the Northam is in the toilets. The9 Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 Arsenal have been doing this for about a decade. They've only been doing it since they've been at the Emirates.
The9 Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 Nope. I assume you're referring to "Adam Lallana *clap clap clap clap clap*" which I do hear every game and I would hardly call a song. I mean the Cristiano Ronaldo song "Viva Ronaldo" with the name changed to Lallana obviously. It sounds so good resonating around the stadium and can go and go forages. Some people suggested it on here over a year ago and it was popular, but never got off the ground. The reason no-one sings it is because it's crap, and we already have at least two for him already (arguably three with the Reuben Agboola song). Midfield_General Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 Indeed. Arsenal sound like absolute morons when they do that, and that's coming from someone who really likes Arsenal in general. No other clubs have picked it up, because it sounds horrendous. I live round the corner from Arsenal and go to the Emirates a few times a year. That first name/ last name thing is embarrassing. Only about 1 in 10 people do it, and the ones who do generally look/sound a bit sheepish when they're doing it because no-one else joins in. The overall effect is as cringey as printing out songsheets and distributing them before the game (which they also tried in a desperate attempt to get some atmosphere going. It didn't work.) It's not crap IMO, like many of Man Utd's songs it's good (pains me to say) but with his current tune fans aren't likely to sing another one. "Makes Messi look ****e" is a cracker, but it's another Man Utd rip off! Edited 4 October, 2011 by niceandfriendly
Chez Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 goal celebration music is a no for me. Hate it with a passion. No need whatsoever for it as we make a massive noise at SMS whenever we score.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 Music after a goal is naff, I dont want it, it's a bloody joke. Whilst we're at it, I hate the players coming out the tunnel together and shaking hands, they need to run out behind the captain who carries the ball, and just run to their end. I also hate the jumping up and down on a bloody podium, with fireworks and all that nonsense going off, whilst "We are the Champions" or some other rubbish is played in the background. What's wrong with a lap of honour, with stragglers falling behind, cup put on goalscorers head, and a few impronto team photos? And the bloody TV should not interview players and Managers on the pitch..............

Charlie Wayman Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 Hate it - whats the point? I genuinely dont underatand the need for music to come on after we've scored, the noise from the crowd is so much better than some sh!te song. Especially embarrassing at Ewood on Saturday when the home team were already 3-0 down... celebrating what exactly, that they're a bunch of losers? 1976_Child Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 The club should play 'the wheels on the bus go round and round...' after we score.
Pilsmer Posted 4 October, 2011 Share Posted 4 October, 2011 What we should do is have more music. Music for corners, music for throw-ins, music for penalties. Music for goal kicks is a no brainer, we could fit in most of the live version of Dazed & Confused in the time Kelvin takes in deciding not to pass it short. Actually I'd like to hear jingles instead of music. Imagine how much revenue we could create if the tannoy was to announce the name of the sponsor every time a set piece was being taken. This could be the crucial difference between finishing in the top 2 or having to negotiate the minefield of the play offs. Companies would pay a fortune to have their name announced like that over the tannoy and we could plough that money back into the squad. If we took this one step further, how about sponsored chants from the crowd?? I'd be bang up for organising a few tunes in Block 36 for that. Could pay for our season tickets if we sing loud enough. Who wouldn't want free football for just helping to promote a brand? The brands could even have competitions for fans to come up with the best songs. The winning songs get an airing at the ground and the winning composer gets to be a brand ambassador. Why has no one thought of this before? The future of football is here. Not songs or jingles but I did notice how many random things were sponsored up at Burnley. "The fourth official has indicated that the amount of time added on at the start of the first half, Sponsored by Roger's Black Pudding, is 2 minutes." "Burnley's first substitution, sponsored by Betty's Lancashire Hotpot, is..." It was all very strange.

Canned music after a goal is an unnecessary attempt to manufacture atmosphere. It's embarrassing because applause only has value if it's spontaneous. Real fans making real noise is real. Canned music during a game actually diminishes the atmosphere by making it artificial, IMHO.
