pap Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Of all the things to make their way across the Atlantic, one thing that really annoys me is when clubs play a snippet of a song after the home team scores a goal. I first saw this up at Ewood Park. Thought it was pretty sad at the time, but forgave the Blackburn fans because they don't really understand what football is. Now, it has been a long time since I've been to a home game, but I understand that we play Blur's Song 2 after we score at St. Marys. I think the whole idea is a bit low-rent, and detracts from the only important noise - the sound of the fans. What are your views?
saint.tom.clancy Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Hate it - whats the point? I genuinely dont underatand the need for music to come on after we've scored, the noise from the crowd is so much better than some sh!te song.
SuperMikey Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 I couldn't hear any music being played after we scored on Saturday - hopefully it won't make an appearance again! The noise our fans make is more than enough thanks!
colehillsaint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 have we done that? honestly haven't noticed.
pap Posted 3 October, 2011 Author Posted 3 October, 2011 99% sure we don't play music after we score. To be fair, think I only heard it once in one of the highlight reels.
colehillsaint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 the amount we are scoring currently suggests to me a concept album
Saint_clark Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 99% sure we don't play music after we score. We do. I thought the same until I heard it on some highlights last season, and every now and then after a goal I do catch bits of the music.
channonball Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 What I'd like is something I've seen when I went to see Frankfurt. The first name is announced and then the crowd shout the surname. Sounded very good!
Barry the Badger Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 We definitely do, but it's not too loud and I rarely notice it. At least it's not bloody Tom Hark, now THAT is cringy.
Jez Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 If most people that go to home games don't even notice music after a goal, what is the point in having it? What is the point in having it even if everyone does notice it?
Micky Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Music after goals, thanks Pap, but that's a 'no' from me.
saintmatt Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 I don't ever notice it either! Should get rid of it. I like the Frankfurt idea!
The Cat Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 What we should do is have more music. Music for corners, music for throw-ins, music for penalties. Music for goal kicks is a no brainer, we could fit in most of the live version of Dazed & Confused in the time Kelvin takes in deciding not to pass it short. Actually I'd like to hear jingles instead of music. Imagine how much revenue we could create if the tannoy was to announce the name of the sponsor every time a set piece was being taken. This could be the crucial difference between finishing in the top 2 or having to negotiate the minefield of the play offs. Companies would pay a fortune to have their name announced like that over the tannoy and we could plough that money back into the squad. If we took this one step further, how about sponsored chants from the crowd?? I'd be bang up for organising a few tunes in Block 36 for that. Could pay for our season tickets if we sing loud enough. Who wouldn't want free football for just helping to promote a brand? The brands could even have competitions for fans to come up with the best songs. The winning songs get an airing at the ground and the winning composer gets to be a brand ambassador. Why has no one thought of this before? The future of football is here.
pap Posted 3 October, 2011 Author Posted 3 October, 2011 Music after goals, thanks Pap, but that's a 'no' from me. It's actually a 'no' from me too, so don't thank me for it. In fact, I emailed the club today asking why we're doing something normally associated with "mickey mouse" clubs. Will let you know if and when I get a response
eurosaint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 What I'd like is something I've seen when I went to see Frankfurt. The first name is announced and then the crowd shout the surname. Sounded very good! Fairly sure they do that at Arsenal (certainly used to !). Can get a bit complicated with names like Wojciech Szcesny but we should be ok, unless Bartosz Bialkowski is playing (and even that is not so difficult) !
Liquidshokk Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Definitely do play music and makes me cringe each time. That blurr song with the wooo hooo chorus comes to mind.. Seriously needs to stop.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 They were talking about this on Talksport the other day and I text in to inform them that Saints don't play music after a goal. I honestly have never heard it.
Liquidshokk Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Must be a full 90 video on saints player that clears this up...
Fan The Flames Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Arsenal do the surname thing when reading the team sheet out.
pap Posted 3 October, 2011 Author Posted 3 October, 2011 Must be a full 90 video on saints player that clears this up... Definitely happens. Check out Saints vs Brum, All Angles Covered on SaintsPlayer. After Lambert's pen, you can clearly hear "Song 2" being played.
Nexstar Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Any chance the music is only played in certain areas of the ground?
Liquidshokk Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Any chance the music is only played in certain areas of the ground? My guess would be that it comes out of the same speakers as the PA system so wouldn't have thought so. Although maybe the PA system sounds worse in certain areas?!?....
Appy Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Maybe because some fans are going mental when we score and don't notice it? Whilst others stand up and clap.

Although maybe the PA system sounds worse in certain areas?!?.... Certainly in the corners is does, but I did 29 homes games last season and honestly cannot remember music after a single goal. I'll watch the extended highlights when they come out and listen closely.
stu0x Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Clearly we should have a few bars from the Vengabus...
Saint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 I can confirm that music is definitely played after we score at St Mary's and that it is Song 2 by Blur. It sounds awful but you can barely hear it thank god. Also, I like what Arsenal do. Saying the first name and the crowd saying the second. It sounds great. I would like to do that. The mere fact that we can't even get the Lallana song off the ground doesn't give me too much hope of this ever happening though. I'm surprised the Lambert song ever caught on tbh.
Liquidshokk Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Maybe because some fans are going mental when we score and don't notice it? Whilst others stand up and clap. Or just a lot of alcohol consumed by certain individuals and memory is a bit hazey? As a soberton at football matches I remember it happening all too clearly.

The Lallana song that is sung at nearly every match now?
Fan The Flames Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 No one in the ground hears it, but it can be heard on the TV highlights, spooky.

once_bitterne Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 I don't ever notice it either! Should get rid of it. I like the Frankfurt idea! Arsenal have been doing this for about a decade.
Hatch Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 What I'd like is something I've seen when I went to see Frankfurt. The first name is announced and then the crowd shout the surname. Sounded very good! No. No it doesn't. They do this at the Emirates and it is cringeworthy. One of the worst ideas ever.
dronskisaint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Only noticed it against Preston due to the low crowd numbers...also left it playing after the restart (although that might have been half-time) and had me shouting to turn it off..embarrassing! That's no from me then.
niceandfriendly Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 No. No it doesn't. They do this at the Emirates and it is cringeworthy. One of the worst ideas ever. Indeed. Arsenal sound like absolute morons when they do that, and that's coming from someone who really likes Arsenal in general. No other clubs have picked it up, because it sounds horrendous.
Saint Garrett Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 We do play music when we score, and hate it. Is there ANYONE that actually wants it ? Why do we have it? Get rid, its embarrassing!
Thedelldays Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 We do play music when we score, and hate it. Is there ANYONE that actually wants it ? Why do we have it? Get rid, its embarrassing!why are you embarrassed by it..?
pap Posted 3 October, 2011 Author Posted 3 October, 2011 why are you embarrassed by it..? Firstly, it's what Mickey Mouse teams do. You don't see the big teams farting choons through their public address system. Secondly, it shows a lack of respect to the opposition, especially as away goals are never given any fanfare. It's classless pettiness. If other teams want to do it, let them, and we'll mock them for being the scumbag peasants they are. We are Southampton. We're better than this. It also shows a lack of respect for the intelligence, feelings and passion of the fans. We know if we've scored, we're more than capable of making our own noise and I haven't seen a single person on here defend it.
Saint Garrett Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Its for teams who cant create an atmosphere themselves. IMO
Thedelldays Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Its for teams who cant create an atmosphere themselves. IMO well, clearly not as it seems
Saint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 The Lallana song that is sung at nearly every match now? Nope. I assume you're referring to "Adam Lallana *clap clap clap clap clap*" which I do hear every game and I would hardly call a song. I mean the Cristiano Ronaldo song "Viva Ronaldo" with the name changed to Lallana obviously. It sounds so good resonating around the stadium and can go and go forages. Some people suggested it on here over a year ago and it was popular, but never got off the ground.

Golden Balls Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 I've tried this song so many times and always get strange looks.
Golden Balls Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 And I don't think I've ever met anyone who likes music after goals. What's the point? Sounds naff
Yate Saint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 I've never noticed either and don't think we need it. Maybe they should let us have a vote on it!?!
Badger Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 I thought we had abandoned this a couple of years ago.We certainly don't need it for atmosphere and should avoid it at all costs.
Badger Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 What I'd like is something I've seen when I went to see Frankfurt. The first name is announced and then the crowd shout the surname. Sounded very good! Another Germanic thing to get to grips with, probably last as long as the 'Bremen corner' thing which I thought we might see this season at SMS but has not returned. Arsenal do the surname thing when reading the team sheet out. Thats just to check that the bloke next to you hasn't fallen asleep yet.
Berkshire Saint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Another one who had no idea that we played it currently either! Remember that we had it when Burley was manager at his and the players request apparently!
Ziggy Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Well I just went on iTunes and listened to the song and realised that this is played after our goals. I am a season ticket holder and can honestly say that I never consciously noticed it until it has just been mentioned. Pointless if you ask me.
