yorkie Posted 1 October, 2011 Share Posted 1 October, 2011 Think we are doing OK - and possibly better. After 10-games teams won't have fully sussed us out, but we can be contained and frustrated - and rely on great saves to stay in games. Saying all that after 10-games we cannot be any higher in the league, but one could argue we could have more points and a better goal difference. Like any report on progress - I think we are doing very well, but must avoid the over confidence scenario. I can't believe this is Saints we are talking about after the last 5-years...but compared to a lot of teams (like West Ham for example) we should be ecstatic. We have a compitent squad, not spent millions on fees or salaries - and from what I can see we are together as a fans for once!

Why are the only teams that are going to be "sussed out" are at the top of the league? Surely Burnley, Millwall, Watford and anyone else are just as likely to be "sussed" out as much as any team at the top? As the season goes on all clubs learn more and more about all the other clubs. RobM Posted 1 October, 2011 Share Posted 1 October, 2011 This is going to sound odd, but bear with me... I'm glad it hasn't been 100% smooth running. I have more confidence from the fact we've lost, been through some rough performances, haven't played 100% in all games and are still top of the league. I'd be concerned this was going to run out and may put it down to a temporary high from promotion if it had all been smooth running. But we've had to battle and scrap in some games and we have walked over others, looked superb at times and a class above some very good teams. It all gives me much more confidence that this is the real Saints What I want now is one or two additions to our permanent defensive and attacking options. If Jos does well between now and Jan, keep him. If not, we need a solid CB. With Jaidi and Martin as cover and hopefully Seaborne back soon, we have good enough cover. In attack, we need Barnie back to fitness and we need one other. If Lamber gets injured, we're screwed.

Under Weststand Posted 1 October, 2011 Share Posted 1 October, 2011 Ten Games in & top of the table, much better than I'd hoped for. I hoped we'd be able to compete, but this start has been nothing short of phenomenal for me, even the defeats/draws we've had the chances to win, but not taken them. 2.2 points per game if we could keep that up then automatic promotion is almost a given! LGTL Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 Two points clear after 10 games, not bad. Noone has been good enough to beat us - we have conspired to let them win with poor defending and terrible finishing. This is probably one of the most competitive leagues in Europe where come match day, league positions are often not relevant. We simply can't dominate every game and expect to turn over everyone. There are always should have's and could have's in football but I think it's important to take stock of what we've done over the last year which has been pretty special. Don't get me wrong - I simply think that our position doesn't tell the full story. We are head a shoulders a better football team than any other in this league. That doesn't (as has been proven) mean we will win every game but we play a passing game that would not be out of place in the Premiership even now... SNSUN Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 Looking at the table, it seems that anyone from Ipswich up is in reasonable touching distance of us, and I suspect a few more from further down could suprise everyone with runs towards the top of the table. (Birmingham are still a threat, Reading, Leeds, Burnley etc.) That said I think a couple could drop away - Derby's start has been amazing but I genuinely think they're overachieving - as perhaps are we - and they'll probably finish up in the higher mid-table. Brighton too seem to be faltering after their good start. I think our start has been fantastic, but I'm not very surprised, we have some great players here, and great manager and a chairman ruthless enough to make big decisions. Can we keep it up? Sure, if we can keep the big players away from injury, but I think the good times will end at some point. A top 6 finish is more than achievable though - finishing in the top two would be orgasmic. In summery, we should be on 30 points and ten points clear of Middlesbrough.

Jimmy_D Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 After 10 games is when the table starts to take shape. Most of the time, you can weed out teams in a false position by looking at goal difference, as it usually turns out pretty accurate for predicting finishing positions, so I'm very VERY happy looking at our performance so far. Not to mention St Mary's has never been more of a fortress, and due to scoring every game, teams have to score at least twice before they can even THINK about beating us... Adkins obviously knows what to say to keep the team motivated when leading at half time as we've won a silly number of games in a row when leading at half time. Our subs always seem to make an impact, either through scoring, or getting assists, or shutting the game down, and we never seem to give up. Even in the two games we've lost we might have got a point just through keeping going right to the end. Our squad is deep, we seem to be able to change players in and out without disrupting the cohesion of the team. The one area I'd like to see us improve is defence. We don't keep as many clean sheets as we'd like, and teams tend to get a few easy chances against us that we might have been cutting out last season (albeit against weaker opposition). That said, I'd far prefer us to play attacking football and maybe concede a few more that we might otherwise.
Saintandy666 Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 We are doing excellent. One area we could improve is at the back because while we are scoring more than the teams around us, we have also let in more. But except that, I can't fault it. Almost perfect!
