Great game today.....

Just having an epic argument with my Arsenal supporting mate. Simple hypothetical question..... As a Saints fan right now, what would you prefer.....

Win the FA Cup...?

or

4th placed finish in the Premiership...?

I won't post my opinion yet, just interested to hear what Saints fans think about this quandary.

Over to you.....

Erm, I think this would be better posted on an Arsenal forum as this just looks a wee bit arrogant at the moment. I'd take the cup though, we'd just get hammered in Europe and some silverware would be nice.

Nothing to do with arrogance and/or how we're doing at present. Simply a "hypothetical" question based on an argument I'm having with my Arsenal supporting mate. Just interested to know which, as a Saints fan, would provide you with greater satisfaction.

Cup every time. I prefer to win things, not come 4th. Thats why last season was ultimately a slight disappointment (bit not too much). No-one remembers who came 4th or even 3rd.

No doubt- CUP every time- It's all about WINNING, not aim for 4th and £££- Most who were alive can name the FAC team of '76 and the positive effect on the club and the whole area. We were 4th around Christmas during Strachan's era, but I can not name all the team that played around then, and that was only 7/8 years ago.

Win a cup every day of the week. I have no interest in Saints being in the champion's league. Which is handy because we probably won't ever be. A cup final is a day out, a trophy, a lifetime's memory, something in the record no one can ever take away, something that creates lifetime club legends, for those of us that don't view great players as "nothing but employees" of course.

I bet Everton fans would have loved to have won a cup instead of their aborted knocked-out-in-qualifying champion's league campaign.

- 4th place and a Champions League spot would set the club up in terms of reputation to attract players and the money needed to buy them in the future in order to win FA Cups and further high league finishes.

- A FA Cup win on its own doesn't, see Pompey.

That is all hypotheticals after securing fourth place. A fourth place on its own is no guarantee of success. FA cup win is success.

The FA Cup in the season it is rightfully decided that the winner should enter the CL instead of 4th place finish in the PL. Nothing like a day at Wembley with Saints in attendance - not that I've ever witnessed it first hand mind you.

Thanks for your responses everyone. Good to see a mixture of views.

From my perspective, the two quotes below pretty much sum up my thoughts.....

Cup for me. Simple fact is, no one is going to remember a fourth placed finish in ten years time. The only reason someone would say fourth is because of what could happen subsequent to that but there are no guarantees. A cup is an actual win and would be remembered for years.

when you question the merrits of 4th as oppossed to winning you sum up all that is wrong with modern football

Yes, the benefits of finishing 4th in the Premiership are obvious but I don't ever remember seeing a 4th-placed trophy. Yes, there is prestige with the CL but once you're knocked out no-one cares you were in the competition. Win a cup and your name is on there FOREVER. All my Arsenal supporting mate cares about is the Champions League. I have to admit, his passion for taking (by his own admission) "the money", over a trophy did shake my faith in being a football fan and I felt quite sad for him. When did football fans start cheering their team on for money as opposed to silverware...???

Despite the money attached to the 4th place, IMHO it's not equivalent to winning the FA Cup.

In isolation, qualifying for Europe is a decent result and I used to be proud of Saints many finishes in a UEFA Cup place in the early 80's, but they were a consolation for not actually winning something.

Even the Runners Up spot in 1984 didn't carry that much kudos at the time. Really proud, but the only benefit was a UEFA Cup spot.

Yes. Arse can only dream of either at the moment.

Maybe it's time they gave the 4th Champions League spot to the FA Cup winners. It would certainly restore some of the enthusiasm to the cup... and make some of the bigger teams take it more seriously.

I agree great idea it would make the FA Cup far more interesting it has lost it's shine in recent years we won won it it was THE cup to win cup final day was special & it would be great if it could be again

Everton finished 4th in 04/05.

I must of missed all their success since then.

4th easy, Attract better players in while playing in Europe.

Playing in the Champions League might attract better players, BUT, does it automatically translate in to a better team, what about wages for the 2nd & 3rd years of their contracts if we don't finish 4th+ again???

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that one 4th placed finish sets us up for the big time.

I would have said the Cup to start with, but if we ever manage to finish 4th and qualify for the Champions League then it would be brilliant.

I couldn't really give a stuff about the money - what would please me most was the fact that we could have the opportunity to play against some of the best teams in Europe.

Saints v Barca at St Marys in a competitive match? Yes please!
