stevegrant Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 What was Sordell like? After all the raving about him during the transfer window....would he be a good signing? Disinterested. From what I gather, on his day he's one of the best strikers in the division, but if it's not his day, he's a waste of space. Watford reminded me of us in 2008-9, start the game brightly, miss a few good chances, have a couple of decisions go against them and then collapse in a heap later in the game. From what I gather, on his day he's one of the best strikers in the division, but if it's not his day, he's a waste of space. Indeed, he has apparently lost all interest and didn't put a shift in, if you're to believe Watford fans. He was non-existent today. He actually turned down the chance to sign for Liverpool at a younger age but decided to go pro with Watford. Sounds like after his U21 call up, he wants to move on to better things. up and away Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 The view from Watford: "We didn't just lose, we sunk without a trace, were completely devoid of any tactical house, ideas, urgency or attacking threat, just like we have been all season, let's be honest, nearly all the goals we've scored this season have been freak occurrences or defensive **** ups rather than merit of our own build up play. We were absolutely ****ing awful today, not one positive to come out with, Gilmartin is absolute toilet and nearly gifted them another three/four goals, the defence was awful, midfield was anonymous, wingers may as well stay at home and nothing upfront. It should have been a cricket score today, and we never really looked like scoring. That was my opinion of Watford before the game and nothing I saw during this game changed that opinion. For 1/2 hour they dragged us down to their level and we never exerted ourselves. Our and their attitude seemed to change after the penalty and it became relatively easy and enjoyable again. There was enough in this side in the second half to produce a result, with or without the penalty. Teams have figured out how to play against us, but it's one thing knowing and another ting doing. I never felt Watford had that in the bag unless we never stepped up to the mark. The Watford play and result is significant, but I feel you need to add in the Burnley and Cardiff games to get a better perspective of where we are. Lallana to me is the key player, if he does his stuff others work off of that and the whole thing just explodes. If Lallana is not doing his stuff, you need someone else to do something that bit special and once again we can look different gravy. The problem comes when a decent team are denying us space and only the likes of Lallana or occasionally Guly look able to do anything about it. Hooiveld and Richardson have had their fair share of comments but overall they are doing well. I was more concerned with Fonte then either of them. But it can be a different picture when you are put under pressure, as I expect West Ham will do. I feel against the really good sides in this division, we need everyone playing well and just don't have the counter attacking ability to be far more effective in those situations. For those occasions I would like to see 4411, with Guly playing behind a lone, pacey striker to stop us getting pressed up the pitch. If we don't secure that midfield against the top teams, we have nothing to build upon and unless you have a striker who can do something on their own to go along with that, you are toothless. I keep being surprised how well Matty Fryatt performs with no support. That said we are doing pretty well as we are and we should be in a good position come the January window to see how things need shaking up. Adkins has really impressed me with how he has grown as a manager. Several limitations from last season have been eradicated and it would not surprise me if he goes to another level in improving us. Sour Mash Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 So let me clarify, team's haven't worked us out? We do or don't need to change our passing game? Just want to be absolutely clear on this... If you're referring to comments after the Burnley and Cardiff games, then yes, teams have worked out us passing it out from the keeper and generally make an effort to close it down. We knocked it long a fair bit yesterday. If you get over excited about us bullying an absolutely dire Watford side for 30 mins in the 2nd half, I suggest it would have been useful for you to have been at the Burnley and Cardiff games to have gained some balance and perspective. miserableoldgit Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 I thought Guly was my man of the match yesterday for his tireless running into space and tracking back. He really worked his socks off and his goal was sublime. Ridder was a bit of a headless chicken and his judgement needs to improve. When he should have passed to Guly he shot and when he should have shot after their No 5 slipped he hesitated. Pity the MOVE resulted in a save. That was pure class and would have been a truly great goal. Very impressive and when travelling back with Watford fans on the train they were a little stunned by our performance. A team that has played together and improved will in the long run beat "purchased" teams like Leicester that demand instant success. They agreed. But this cannot be!! We keep being told by various knowledgeable posters on here that he is f*cking rubbish and shouldn`t even be on the pitch. FWIW, I agree with you. He was very good today and took his goal with so much coolness. Guly really is a "marmite" player. You either love him or hate him. A guy sat behind me commented after a bad pass from Guly " He`s not very good is he?" but made no comment whenever he played well, which was most of the time yesterday. positivepete Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 Lee Holmes became our 10th different scorer in 10 league games this season. I am not sure if that is some sort of record after 10 matches but there cannot be many times that has happened before. All our midfield has scored with the most coming from our "wide" midfield players. That is what makes us difficult to play against for 90 minutes. rallyboy Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 people are right about Lambert struggling yesterday. He was marked so tightly and physically that they kept him out of the game. And gave away two penalties as a result. Yes teams may have sussed us out - but as people have said there is one thing asking someone to mark Lallana out of the game, another doing it. Ditto the short passing - if we resort to the long ball because they have closed down our back four, a whole world of space and opportunity opens up for our midfield. We are a multi-dimensional team - or is it as Poyet suggests, no more than Dagenham playing hoof ball to a big front man?... Gus who?

Chez Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 tremendous day, just could not stop smiling, well after the first ten minutes anyway. Bouncing back after a defeat is a very good sign. Not sure there is anything to moan about, a few two many hollywood passes from Fox maybe and a poor start where we hit a lot of long balls that were all won my Taylor, but that's it for me. Bloody great. Such a shame there is a international break. Davis 9 as always we have to talk about distribution and it was fine, just two poor kicks all day and he didn't put anyone under any pressure. Some good saves and one absolutely world class save when they looked certain to score Fox 7 too many eye of the needle long balls when I'd prefer more short stuff to Lallana. Good game overall, apart from a poor decision deep in the second half when he should have cleared his lines but overplayed and we were lucky not to concede because of it Fonte 8 grew as the game went on and seemed to actually improve when given a tougher test by Iwelumo Jos 9 didn't put a foot wrong that I can recall. He's a steady eddy. Richardson 9 another very good display, strong, progressive and also some very good positional play Cork 8 everything you would expect, busy, strong and dominant Hammond 8 equally good. The rest was a good move I think despite the defeat Lallana 6 pretty quiet - Fox does not pass to him enough - but still decent when in possession. Very unlucky not to score de Ridder 9 quick, lots of movement and hard running off the ball. A threat on it. Fine display and very encouraging for the future. Lambert 8 disappointing that he couldn't beat Taylor in the air at all early on, but he did what he does best, find space, shuffle over to the fullback and win everything there instead. He's another penalty king after le Tiss, BT and Crouch before him. Made me think back to the McGoldrick/Wotton pen debarcle of a few seasons back. Guly 8 decent display. Not sure about playing them together, they don't link well to be honest, but he does a good job when we are dominating and offers something slightly different to Connelly. Chaplow 8 first class when he came on Holmes nice slightly deflected goal which is well deserved for all his hard work getting back to full fitness Morgan we are just not weakened with our subs
SNSUN Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 Very happy today, although a little hung over from last night's shenanigans. Apparently I spent the night hiding from my friends in the nightclub and peering around corners. I was very drunk. 4-0 is a comprehensive win, especially as it sounded like we didn't play well in the first half, After only one point from two games I was concerned of form had dipped and we'd slump away from the top, but thankfully it seems our home form will carry us through. LGTL Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 Davis 9 - An absolutely brilliant save at 1-0 Richardson 9 - Fantastic going forward, and he's an absolute tank. Obviously extremely fit as he was bombing forward from first minute to last. No real problems defensively. Jos 8 - Wins everything in the air, even if the headers don't always reach their targets. Played well after a shaky first 20 minutes. Fonte 8 - Forging a good partnership with Jos, again was shaky in the first half but improved when put under more pressure by Iwellumo who didn't get a sniff. Fox 7 - Best game for him so far, puts in a lovely cross but can sometimes try to overplay. He wasn't getting so drawn towards centre half. De Ridder 8 - Looked extremely sharp and always provided a threat down the right. Looked to link up well with Richardson. Cork 9 - Rock. Hammond 8 - Was off at Burnley but much improved today. He links up defence and attack magnificantly at times, and he has a really good awareness of whats happening around him. Lallana 8 - Back to his best when he's on the ball, so unlucky with his effort that hit the bar, superb technique. When teams are tiring he can just take the ****. Guly 8 - Another good performance, people need to look beyond his perceived "laziness" (it's more the fact that he doesn't have to try very hard to be good). Lambert 8 - Brilliant penalty taker, he was a handful. I still think he'll be even better with a striker who likes to run in behind. Chaplow - Has seriously impressed me every time he has come on the pitch this season, barring Barnsley. Unlucky not to score. Morgan - Classy on the ball, came on at a good time. Holmes - Pleased for him, he has lots of ability if and when he can get fully fit over a long period of time.

sidthesquid Posted 2 October, 2011 Share Posted 2 October, 2011 I'd just like to add a couple of comments. One - I thought Fox played really well, best game for us, two - Watford just couldn't live with us, we passed them to death like Brum, three - why the hell weren't there a queue of Prem teams trying to sign up Jack Cork in the summer, £750000 for him is looking like bargain of the season, and four - I'm feeling scarily optimistic at present, I hate old Merrington's waffle normally but he goes on about 'blueprinting' and he is right, we can bring players in and out but they know how to play in our team and what is expected of them which makes our squad so strong.
