David Chell scores key role with Southampton FC

29th September 2011

David Chell has been appointed chief commercial officer at Southampton FC

DAVID Chell, who spent a decade at Manchester CIty Football Club, developing its corporate hospitality offer, has landed a new role at ambitious Championship club Southampton.

Chell, 46, who left City 10 months ago, has become chief commercial officer at Southampton, where his responsibilities include retail and ticketing as well as corporate hospitality.

The corporate offer includes 47 boxes and a number of banqueting suites and lounges amounting to around 2,000 covers.

Glad to see the club addressing this particular problem, hopefully we'll soon start to see the empty hospitality seats start to fill up again.

totally agree, be nice to see the 'posh' seats used a bit more, or get rid of them and replace them with normal seats and sell them game by game. should be easy enough to replace them when were back in the premiership :)

hopefully he will look at the pricing structure and bring back the small discount that season ticket holders used to get. always liked a once a season treat but not at the current prices !!

Hopefully electronic season tickets next season then. City have had it for ages.

They had electronic ticketing at Cardiff last night. I had bought a student ticket (only £15) on the basis that I could upgrade if I "forgot" my student ID. As it turned out, no-one checked my ticket; I just scanned it and walked in. For that reason, I don't think we'll see electronic ticketing at St Mary's anytime soon.

I confidently predict that in a few years from now, David Chell will be held in much higher esteem than anyone previously involved with the club.

Better start thinking of organising a collection for a statue then. Does anyone know of a sculptor who might fancy the commission? Must be a Saints fan, previous experience not required.

Didnt the club appoint some Swiss guy to head up hospitality last summer? What happened to him? Agree they should sort the offer out, not enough range atm. We always used to have a family get a table for a family get together once a year, but not recently. A bookable table, decent food, bit of professional chat, good seat and cash bar shouldnt be too hard to sort out surely.

You wonder what sort of package must have been on offer to tempt him away from a Champions league club

Wonder if there will be any concerts at St Marys in the summer?

He wasn't. He left Man City 10 months ago. Clearly they didn't feel he was the man for them at champions league level. Yet more evidence of our lack of ambition by taking this champions league reject on. Less talking the talk and more walking the walk please Nicola.

Feking address the feking temperature of the feking cornish feking past-feking-ies.

I'm feking fed feking up with burning my feking lips and then feking having to put it in my feking pocket till next feking Tuesday before the feking nuclear feking reaction which feking cooked it feking wares off.

For feks sake. If this feking chappie can give us feking past-feking-ies like they feking have at Cit-feking-eh then it is a good feking signing.

A little late to the party with this news but I play football with an old colleague of Chell at Man City and he has nothing but positive things to say about him.

Chell left Man City as they were making decisions at Board level which he didn't agree with regarding the pricing structure of hospitality at the club. Prices effectively increased 50% and Chell was opposed to it. During the upheaval Chell was one of the fall guys. Chell was proved right as the season they implemented the change hospitality revenues were down £1.5m. The economic downturn had an impact but the increased costs undoubtedly did as well.

Chell was well liked at Man City by his team but with his run-ins with the Board I hope Cortese gives him the autonomy to make decisions and does not undermine him. If this is the case, it sounds like we have a good man for the role.
