um pahars Posted 29 September, 2011 Share Posted 29 September, 2011 Is there a rule that we must hate ex players? I watched the highlights and have to admit it made me smile when he scored, he wanted to move to a bigger club (most players do) and we got a very good price for him no need to hate him for that IMO. You should see what some say about players who give 17 years of service to the Club Once they stop playing, that's it.

PokingFun Posted 29 September, 2011 Share Posted 29 September, 2011 I was calculating some stats from last seasons League games the other day and I found something interesting re Alex. I think everyone knows that we averaged 2.00 points a game last season (28W 8D 10L) and that Nigel's record was 2.20 (excl MK) or 2.15 (incl MK). I have used the Sports Echo's stats page (p14) of the 14 May where they list the teams to calculate the following :- (p.s. there is an error on this page in that they said Adam played left midfield at Orient, but it was Ryan. so there may be other errors) When Alex didn't play..... :- 9W 0D 3L (2.25 points a game) When Alex came on as sub...:- 5W 1D 1L (2.29 points a game) When Alex started the game :- 14W 7D 6L (1.81 points a game) Our most important player as everyone knows was Adam :- When Adam didn't play......:- 3W 3D 4L (1.20 points a game) When Adam came on as sub...:- 3W 1D 2L (1.66 points a game) When Adam started the game :- 22W 4D 4L (2.33 points a game) I think most of our other important players averaged 2 points a game when they started, it was only Alex where the average was below 2 (1.81). Now you could argue that with his "head down and charge at the opposition" approach that either a) his teammates could not keep up with him, or b) he struggled to fit in with Nigel's "pass and move" football and/or "change of systems (i.e. diamonds etc)". I'm not saying he isn't a good player, but I was suprised how low his average was (1.81 points), "when he started a game". Ah, but how many of those games did Adam not start when Alex did? It is quite possible that Adam not being involved in a large number of the games where AOC started may have also artificially reduced AOC's PPG total. Misleading comparisons in my opinion and would have loved to have them both in the team this season however it was not to be and we banked a load of money. Good luck to the kid, hes a good player no doubt, wish him well and move on.
dune Posted 29 September, 2011 Share Posted 29 September, 2011 You're lying again, dune, and - like most of the stuff you post - you can't back it up with facts. I've never claimed to be a better fan than anyone (how can I be over here?), although I certainly can't be far behind you. You're another one who doesn't like to be challenged on the utter nonsense you so often post. Why is it that the only response you and your like have to my posts on a discussion forum is to make a childish geographic point? If that's your best response to the challenge it's clear that your point was weak in the first place. You commented on me never going to games when I have done 100% more games than you. If you can't take it don't dish it out. BTW I wasn't being serious, but should have known better than to expect a sense of humour in return. Mowgli Posted 29 September, 2011 Share Posted 29 September, 2011 Why don't you start threads on other ex-players who are no longer relevant to us, let's discuss Pulis at Aldershot. Why are people "proud" of chamberlain? He didn't want to be here and only started a handful of games for us, all he has done is boost the bottom line on our balance sheet. Pulis has now played four games for the shots and is undefeated. Ok he has not scored yet but that's not what he is there for. No yellow. No reds. I just wish that people would realise that this is partly due to our amazing backroom staff and modern training facilities that has helped to give 'our Tony' the confidence and inspiration to reach a new level. Left but no forgotten -good on yer mate.
Jimmy_D Posted 29 September, 2011 Share Posted 29 September, 2011 The Daily Mail reporting annoys me... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2042935/Arsenal-2-Olympiakos-1-Early-goals-secure-victory-Gunners.html "Oxlade-Chamberlain provided yet more evidence of why he was Wenger’s most expensive acquisition of the summer at £12million" "In Oxlade-Chamberlain they at least discovered a player with the potential to become another Arsenal favourite" He's played all of what? 3-4 hours for them so far? Been there a matter of weeks, and there's not one mention of Saints, not one, not even just putting 'from Southampton' after the price. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2043055/Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain-makes-history-Arsenal-win.html They also have an entire article on him, also without mentioning us. It almost feels like it's deliberate, it would have take all of two words to mention where he's spent 99% of his career.

It's only lazy journalism, anyone with half a brain will know AOC came from Saints and anyone without half a brain can check it out on wikipedia. Besides, I don't care if the whole world thinks our accademy is sh*t. I'd rather nobody knew about the likes of Bale, Walcott, AOC and Lallana until they're 18, on a proffesional contract and you have to kiss Cortese's arse to buy them. The Kraken Posted 6 October, 2011 Share Posted 6 October, 2011 Fair play to him. I actually think he could, quite quickly, make the money spent on him look a comparitive bargain. Jordan Henderson at £16M highlights my point.

Jordan Henderson at £16M highlights my point. If he'd scored against Aston Villa and got a Hat trick against Rotherham, I doubt people would be quite so excited. For some reason I can't seem to fathom, foreign sh*t teams are (apparently) better than English sh*t teams. Not knocking him, I don't begrudge him his move and wish him all the best, but lets not get too excited. £12m is a lot of money and spening £100m on Jermaine Wright wouldn't make Chamberlain any better. Fair points, and he could well not do too much at the top level. But he's now put in two fantastic performances at Under 21 level (set up 3 goals in his last performance) and scored in the Champions League. Walcott didn't play a first-team game for Arsenal until half a season after signing for them. While you can only beat what's put in front of you, I just think he's headed for the very top, and will get there pretty quickly. Which is clearly a statement that could come back and bite me on the arse very easily!

Ken Tone Posted 7 October, 2011 Share Posted 7 October, 2011 TBF - Iceland U-21s were conference quality. Population of Iceland is c 300,000, which as someone pointed out in another thread is about the size of the Southampton, urban area alone. The main question is why didn't several other england players score too?

The main question is why didn't several other england players score too? To be fair that statistic is meaningless by itself, by way of example the rugby playing population of New Zealand is less than that of the Eastern Cape in South Africa alone. The All Blacks do allright for themselves though.
