for_heaven's_Saint Posted 27 September, 2011 Share Posted 27 September, 2011 Personally I've been a little disappointed so far but I think he'll improve back to his best with a solid and consistent partner, hopefully Hooiveld.
Give it to Ron Posted 27 September, 2011 Share Posted 27 September, 2011 Dodgy and we are not in the Prem so it doesnt matter. We would have different set up if that happens.
um pahars Posted 27 September, 2011 Share Posted 27 September, 2011 Struggling a little in the games I have seen him, but hasn't been helped by either being part of a makeshift back four or having a new partner alongside him. To be honest I think he's easily good enough for this division and just adjusting to the step up, as think last couple of seasons have been a doddle for a player of his ability. Also think he could hack it in the top flight (but would need support from another strong player).
doddisalegend Posted 27 September, 2011 Share Posted 27 September, 2011 I think he misses Jaidi playing along side him TBH they forged a good partnership last season. This Season he has had to keep changing his partner which must make it harder for him.
sfc4prem Posted 27 September, 2011 Share Posted 27 September, 2011 I think he's been shaky this season. Less confident and dominant. Perhaps he needs a run in a consistent back four. I don't think Jaidi will cut it in this league so Hooiveld will need to play alongside Fonte a lot more until they get a decent understanding between each other. But whatever the reason, his performances have been disappointing this season
Deanovski Posted 27 September, 2011 Share Posted 27 September, 2011 can see a real partnership between him and hooiveld
fanimal Posted 27 September, 2011 Share Posted 27 September, 2011 Had his worst game for us that I have seen on Saturday, inexplicable really as he was always the one who seemed to have the extra time and be in control. Injury? Confidence? Partners? When did you last see him get beat to the ball like Austin did for their goal?
CWD Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 From what I have seen of him this season so far, I think NPC is his level. Long way to go though, and he will benefit from forming a strong partnership with Hooiveld imo.
Chez Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 dives in too much for me. He got away with it a lot last season, less so this and in the top flight he would be punished badly for that. I don't think he's having a bad season so far though, just one or two games he hasn't been as dominating as he was last season - but that is inevitable as the opposition is far better. Capel Saint Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 Not as good as last season but as other posters have mentioned, he has not had a regular defensive partner yet. Hopefully Hooiveld will be the answer and he can improve. Whether he can make it at Prem level would be highly questionable at this stage.
corky morris Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 Nowhere near as commanding as last season, but its very early days in the champ so confident he can improve.

Saint_clark Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 In fairness last season was probably a piece of p*ss for him, so he's taking a bit of time to adjust to actually playing against good strikers again.

K,Billy's supersound Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 no imo he is a good solid championship defender nothing more tbh we would need a complete new back line if we did get promoted but lets not even bother worrying about that just yet. This is such simplistic thinking. Who would have thought 12 months ago that Dean Hammond would be performing the way he is in the NPC now? Fonte definitely has the potential to be a decent Prem CB, so we should give him that chance should we get there.

I honestly don't think thats how the club see it, I think the idea is to evolve a team not just throw money at one.
doddisalegend Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 It's the saints forum way to never, ever under any circumstances learn from your mistakes! All must be written off at least once. If we did go up, we get to write off Hammond again which will be fun. I'm going to suggest Fonte is better than Claus, who made many top flight appearances and looked good when paired with a better, more solid defender. I do wish people would accept that to play the attacking football we play, it's going to leave gaps at the back. If Fonte played in a defensive team, he wouldn't magically be a better player, but he'd be part of a better defence and no doubt get more praise. He's played in this league many times and done very well for Palace, been exceptional since he joined us, remains our best defender and currently is part of the team top of the league. Thinking about it though, he's rubbish and I've written him off. Come be honest have you never written of a saints player ever........ You wait until Tommy Frecast steps up to the plate after a keeper crisis and makes the penalty save that secures our promotion..................... Saintandy666 Posted 28 September, 2011 Share Posted 28 September, 2011 I think he is a top Championship defender. I'm not sure whether he can step up to the premiership or not, but I have always thought this. Time will tell.
