Bring him in, and if he does nt do the business, we ship him out again....no harm done!!

I loved Beattie as a Saints player and he loves the club and the City....give him a try. Can we or might we have already invited him to training??

He hasn't scored for his last two clubs. He is not as good as the strikers we have.

If NA thinks we need back up, let him come and train for free and prove he is worth a deal until the end of the season, but personally, IF we do need cover up front, I think we could get better on loan from the Prem.

....and another point. He caused dressing room unrest at Stoke. Do we need that amongst our harmonious squad? We didn't want Puncheon here for similar reasons.

9 goals in the Premier League the season before last. 34 goals in 62 games in the Championship the pervious season before that. You can dress stats up any way you want to.

Offer him a 1 year deal with an option for a 2nd year if he perfroms I say!

If you had heard the managers amused/mystified response to this rumor on the radio then you'd be in absolutely no doubt as to just how improbable James Beattie's return is. As of the middle of last week, there had been no significant contact between the club and this player. Now Beattie might fancy a second go here (why wouldn't he) or maybe his agent could be trying to drum up some interest, but none of that amounts to a hill of beans in all honesty.

But more than any of that, does signing aging players on (presumably) large wages seem to fit in with the clubs transfer strategy of signing promising young players at (or near) the prime of their careers ?

I'll eat my hat if James Beattie re-signs for this club - and its made of tin.

Completely this. Cannot believe this thread has been going so long. When I first heard the rumour I thought "no chance" and nothing has happened to change my mind.

We don't need James Beattie, we don't need to waste money on James Beattie, James Beattie is not in form or in shape, we are clearly not, ever, going to sign James Beattie.

All the James Beattie "well he was quite good two and a half years ago or something" supporters can all say "I told you so" when he is banging them in left right and centre for any other club - he's a free agent so there must be loads of teams after him if he really is that good.

As of last week Beattie has not trained with Saints at all, Adkins wanted to have a look but Cortese said No.

Beatts wants to sign for us and has expressed he will take a major pay cut to do so but it seems dead in the water at the moment.

Beattie has one offer on the table and that's to a America in January.

Interesting, as he told me 3 weeks ago in town (he was out with Bridgy on a Sunday afternoon) that he was going to train with us the following week. Obviously veteod at the last minute?

Have to say he was an absolute gent and bought a round for my group after chatting with me, seems incredibly passionate about "us" (Saints) - but then again who wouldn't?

Beatts is a gent, met him a few times. However, Bridgey is a ****.

When NA was interviewed last week about signing Beatts he said something like "where did that come from" and then told the JB has stated he would like to return, NA replied something like, who wouldn't want to come and play for this club, its a good place to be.

Personally I would like to see him come and train with us, get fit and prove he is worth a punt with a lowish wage demand, would definitely get goals with some of the service coming from the wings.

He's worth a trial. But, frankly he left with attitude, he's only any good when super fit (he's now 33) and he's failed at every team he's joined since his two cracking seasons with Saints. I don't think he'd last 15 mins with Nigel frankly.

Apart from his time at Sheff Utd!!

Maybe he should stop going to 90's so much, and concentrate on getting fit.

His fitness is already questionable, I can't imagine getting wrecked is doing him any favours.

I have no issue with (and even encourage) players having fun in town, but Beattie isn't even training, let alone playing football. His trips to town can't be helping his "fitness". Also, I notice his ego hasn't changed, he's still a complete bellend every time I've seen him out.

The people that are saying that BT is unfit, have they actually seen him ? he is certainly a lot leaner than when he originally played for us !

There's a difference to looking slim enough to walk around a nightclub with a drink in your hand and being able to play football at Championship level. Sheff Utd took a look at Beattie a couple of weeks back and said they would be interested in him coming back there but that he was some way away from match fitness.

So if we did give him a contract it would take a good few weeks to get him anywhere near match fit so surely the better option would be to wait until January and just buy someone decent.
