James Beattie

It's a risk and reward thing for me.

Would we be risking more than we stand to gain by bringing Beatts back?

The dressing room chemistry is one of the cores of our success over the past year, and so is our ability to play high-tempo football with multiple focuses (rather than just a big guy up front).

I'd hate to see us jeopardize these things for the chance of a negligible gain. I'm a strong "No".

If this story has legs and if he has the appetite and if the manager thinks his attitude is right and that Beattie could do a job, then why not.

More than happy to accept NA's judgement, (and a little part of me would just love to see the odd glimpse of the old James Beattie).

Cupping his hand to his ear still gives me a smile to this day.

I was talking to a mate of James Beattie's on Saturday morning, he told me that this had happened but Cortese has vetoed ex players coming back.

Wow! I didn't see a smiley so I assume that you are serious about that Dave.

Cork and Chaplow were both loanees so I guess it could be true, but it certainly raises some questions/concerns.

Thank god a lot of our old players weren't very good then.........;)

 Yeah, there aren't many I'd want back, especially given the style we play, but that's not really the point.

It's sounding more like the "Southampton Style" is a root and branch concept of Cortese's, which would explain why he's not interested in re-attaching any old limbs!

I get the feeling he is wiping the slate clean. I expect he is well aware of the politics and what he has experienced since.

When Beattie first joined Saints he was pretty much a failure at Blackburn and arrived with something to prove. I recall Keith Legg (Blessed be his name) of Saintsforever saying he's never make it at Saints. But he did. For me, a fit Beattie offers an alternative in games,. Quite rightly he's not Ricky, may not fit in with the current game plan, but Nigel has shown he likes to change the way we play, take on other teams, Since Beattie left he's been playing for losers. The current atmosphere and success might be just what is needed to bring back the fire into his belly. I think he'd be good to have around in our struggle to get back to the Premiership.

Good players don't become bad players. They become unfit players or out of form players but not bad players. Beattie was good at one time for the right manager - in his case Strachan. If he was signed on the same basis as Connelly originally was then I cannot see how we lose. If he came over Billy BB then I suspect the rest of the squad would sort him. FWIW I don't think that he would and I would be surprised if, in our set up, we couldn't get him firing again.

yes he older..and it reeks of the Prodigals return, but were not talking about a 3 year contract..or even one year I suspect.

If there is any chance that he could be back in case of ....!! then get him training for free and let NA make a decision..

3 months deal is OK to the New Year..if OK then extend to seasons end.

If he's even a patch on his best form then he'd be good cover for Lambert in the event of ...*!!+#

It really is a no-brainer, but if we have to be without Lambert in the side we have no big man up front...'cept maybe Guly.

I agree with NC on not getting Beats back, for so long as a fanbase we have lived in the past (to be fair , alot still do, craving for the good old days of fanontheboard etc!!)

Now it's time to move forward and create a new history. I'm not saying totally forget about our past, but you sometimes need to cut a few cords in order to move forward.

He'd be a good signing. You can never have too many goal scorers and if we pick up injuries/suspensions it's the difference between success and failure.

If we were interested in goal scorers why would we be interested in James Beattie? Apart from two great seasons with us the biggest problem in his career (apart from perhaps his girth, oh and his billy big ******** attitude) was that he has consistently failed to score goals which, for a centre-forward, is a little bit of a disadvantage. Lets just enjoy the memories of his heyday and move on.

Well that is rubbish. What about Chaplow and Cork in their second spells at the club?

Beattie in the Echo tonight confirmed that the playing management were interested but it was a no from above. Exactly what I was told on Saturday morning. Chaplow and Cork weren't ex Saints with a history they were short term loans.

He's relatively fit

Offer him a pay as you play deal

He's local, thru marriage, so settled in the area

We should write him off like we did Holmes, Hooiveld, Connolly and back in 0708, Lallana.

You are rapidly becoming one of the funniest posters on here mate!

It's good to see some of our forum superstars are willing to accept Niges judgement on it though, always refreshing.

Thank you (if you mean it, lol)... though I fear I might be grating on some, but it's just ****ing me off big-time. Whinge, *****, whine, nothing's ever good enough... it's almost as boring as reading my monotonous sarcasm, I'm sure!

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/transfer-news/Southampton-target-free-agent-striker-James-Beattie-for-a-return-to-the-club-but-he-s-also-wanted-by-Sheffield-United-article804855.html

apart from the 'love' where is there any direct quote in either pieces?

Saying that, if he has kept himself fit, which I am sure any committed to the cause professional would have done this past off season, I reckon he could be an asset. However, if he's shown the same attitude as in the past regards fitness, I would not entertain the idea. He's a man of a certain age, ie he needs to keep fit and has the potential to attract a healthy wage packet. If he can't keep himself in pristine condition for the past few months then I doubt he will show any better commitment to our cause if he were signed. Too many journeymen willing to just pick up a wage packet IMO have passed our way of late as opposed to the early days of my watching the Saints. In LM's time these players came in and showed just as much commitment to the cause as the manager that signed them...and they performed. Since the early 90's, a certain Chelsea duo being the first I recall, Saints have on the whole failed to inspire those players they've signed that are reaching the end of their careers (I'll no doubt now be regaled with a multitude now).

If NC can be that driving force of inspiration for older players coming to the club as well as the rest, and let's face it, there seems to be a multitude to chose from as we near the zenith, I cannot see why not give Beatts a try. Pay as you play or to end of season contract. Who's to say he's not mellowed out in his old-er age and more importantly settled down south where one of our local lasses is not having to contend with northerners day in day out.

A happy wife is after all, a happy hubby.

For once im ITK about his situation,He has been training with us this season, he does want to play for us but from what i heard no club down here wants him at the moment a few championship clubs have come in for offers but nothing he likes not the wages but the clubs ambitions, also hes had a few offers from prem teams but doesnt really wanna go there if hes not playing. regular football and there only 1 year deals.

I think he would be a brilliant addition to the squad him and Lambert upfront would work well iMO, DC is bound to get injured at some point and LB well if he goes down for a few months we could do with a striker, otherwise Forte who has been scoring in the league cup games but hes not good enough to start games.

Being brutal, if he is out of contract and training with us then UNTIL (God forbid) RL gets injured there would be no need to actually sign him.

Totally understand why he hasn't been signed, anyone who can't understand the difference between having a bus & having a bunch of Rolls Royce's & Ferraris should just look at and read stuff about Man City at the moment.

We don't need him today, we can cope in a match situation with only 5 subs anyway so he probably wouldn't even get on the bench. Absolutely no point signing him if he's around anyway. This way we have the ability to bring him in short term in an emergency OR find somebody more used to riding on the bus.

Our squad these days is about the mentality of the players and togetherness as much as it is about ability. What we have at this moment is something that the youngsters will never have seen, a true team for the first time since the days of Nicholl & LM.

If he finds somewhere then good luck to him, if we suddenly need him, he's around.

He had a tough time at Everton but the move to Sheff Utd kick started his career. I see absolutely no reason why he couldn't come and do a job for us. Nigel seems to have the ability to get the best from players so you never know what could happen. Strikers are all about confidence. Beattie's will have been shattered over the last couple of years. I say give the lad a chance.

I don't think the attitude would be a problem - I think Beatts has been and done his superstar thing, wised up and is now just desperate to be involved somewhere for one last adventure.

Coming back to the club that gave him his big break and play a role in a promotion challenge would be such a sweet deal that he would be permanently eating out of our hand with gratitude. So far from being a disruption, I think would be a positive force in the dressing room -he's an exuberant, vocal character and always stands up to be counted - a great character to have as the season progresses and we invariably hit sticky patches.

Of course, all this assumes he's match fit - but if he is, I think he still has something to offer. We need somebody who can lead the line, go direct, rough up defenders (and bury easy headers). My only reservation is the signal it gives Barney - its a shame he has been injured and not been able to prove himself at this level (it would matter less if Beatts was a different player; but there are similarities between the two).

Good post - Plenty of sympathy there for some of your points from me.

My memory isn't all it should be, but my abiding memories of Beatties was some great free kicks, and him being our first line of defense...ie him and Ormerod chasing every ball down and pressurising the defence into errors - and the fact that half the time he couldn't even trap a bag of cement! lol I loved his 100% approach and when I saw him on TV in later years, his pressuring of the defense was the element of the game that he had given up on. Can't see him going back to that sort of game for us at his age.

I think you need to get to the training ground next time your back. I can assure you the players these days aren't exactly rocking up for work on scooters and clapped out Ford Fiestas.

As someone else mentioned, aside from a few people witnessing his behaviour out of the town (myself included), has there really been any other mention of a disruptive attitude? Word is he got involved with getting Paul Sturrock the sack but was he wrong in doing this? If you think he was, it didn't exactly hold Jason Dodd back did it? He is still involved with the club.

Sammysaint reckons BT has deffo been training with us and this makes sense. Adkins would be mad to at least not have a look.
