Durleyfos Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/9272676.Beattie_keen_on_Saints_return/ Link to todays Echo. Bring him in to train with us for a week, if he's up to scratch sign him on a pay as you play contract. Ideal back up should Lambert be out for any length of time.
Greenridge Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He's been making overtures to a few clubs but obviously no takers as yet. There's no doubt we are worringly thin on the ground up front so if a deal can be made that suits all parties then why not. Clearly he would need to prove his fitness and desire first.
Patrick Bateman Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Yep, let him train and see if he can offer anything (unlikely, even as back-up though I think). But it's whether he brings in a Billy-big-b*llocks attitude or not that is the problem.
Spudders Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 if a deal can be made that suits all parties then why not. Clearly he would need to prove his fitness and desire first. This sounds reasonable enough to me! As per all the other Beattie threads recently, there are people who will say he's past it now, or that we should not look back. However if he's up for it and his wage demands are ok, then why not.
saints-cris Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He'd also need to be OK playing second fiddle to Lambert.
swannymere Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 I'd worry about his influence on the dressing room, i think we have a balanced squad who appear to like each other and Mr.Beattie can be a bit Marmite for some people.
Genk Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Would be decent to have as back-up but two things worry me. Firstly, he will want a fair whack in terms of wages which he doesn't deserve. Secondly and more importantly, he has an attitude problem in terms of his ego. I'm more than happy for him to play second fiddle to Rickie if he doesn't bring that attitude with him which could harm the 'unity' we have built within our team. Can't really see it happening. But stranger things have happened.
SFC Chris Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He couldn't get near a ****-poor Rangers side which speaks volumes. No thanks.
thorpie the sinner Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 The powers that be have said No, so I guess that answers the query!
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 No thanks, he's a billy big bollix, wouldnt fit our ethos, team spirit or style. He did us proud in 2002/03 but thats where he belongs.
COMEONYOUREDS Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 FFS. This is about the 100th Beattie thread in the last 12 months.
HK_Phoey Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He couldn't get near a ****-poor Rangers side which speaks volumes. No thanks. Agree with this. Well past his best and seems to have fallen out with a number of the managers he has played for since leaving us. Would not be first choice, but I think HE would expect to at least be on the bench and with only five subs you run the risk of upsetting someone else and possibly further restricting the chances of some of the youngsters coming through. Relise that some are concerned as to what plan B is if something happens with Rickie but personally feel that the managment team is already thinking this through and don't see Beatts be part of that plan. If he was he has already been out of conttract for at least a month and we have not acted on it.
sir woody Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He was injured at rangers, i saw him on saturday in town with his wife and he looked as fit as a butchers dog ! He must be living back down here permanently because it's about the fifth time i've seen him. Sign him up, he has a lot of points to prove and he needs a club, just as well he likes Saints.
pap Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Feck me, if we're going to do Groundhog Day, can I at least get to boink Andi McDowell*? *From then, not now** **Ok, probably now too.
Dimond Geezer Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 I'm not so sure his wage demands will be particularly high, surely getting a low wage (in football terms) is better than not getting a wage, as he is currently. I agree with others that if he if fit enough & his attitude is right, he would be a good back-up for Lambert.
skintsaint Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 I bet he is keen as no other ****er will take him which is why he still has no club.
GenevaSaint Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Lets face it, if he could get fit he'd be a decent backup option. If Lambert is injured we have no one to play that role. No one's saying give him a 3 year contract, pay as you play with a retainer he'd be reasonable.
Viking Warrior Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 If you want to draw similarity with rangers hooveld couldn't get in the Celtic team either
itchen_dan Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Couldn't agree more with many of the responses on here. Definitely deserves a contract IF his fitness is good and he is prepared to fight for a place and be currently content sitting on the bench. Pay as you play would be a great option. Same sort of deal structure as Hargreaves is on at City and I'm sure all parties would be satisfied.
Saint_clark Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He wouldn't accept a pay as you play deal.
S-Clarke Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He wouldn't accept a pay as you play deal. Then he's going to struggle to find a club, IMO.
Saint_clark Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Then he's going to struggle to find a club, IMO. I doubt it. I reckon there'd easily be a lower NPC club or any in League 1 that would offer him a contract - obviously he'd have to take a wage cut, but it would still work out as more than a pay as you play deal if he can't get in the side.
dellgirl Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He is a much nicer person now and has a happy marriage and 3 cracking kids and would like to be here ,I don't think money is an issue but the dressing room I don't know. As for the Marmite analogy my son says yes my nephew says no !
the saint in winchester Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Lets face it, if he could get fit he'd be a decent backup option. If Lambert is injured we have no one to play that role. No one's saying give him a 3 year contract, pay as you play with a retainer he'd be reasonable. Agree with this. A PAYP deal would protect the Club. If it turns sour then he is free to move on. Sadly, now this has appeared in the Echo, I think that will end the chances of it happening, but I would do it. We do need a Lambert backup, and I don't want to spend daft money on Rodrigues or Maynard to get a backup for RL.
saint.tom.clancy Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 I'd be happy to see him here, as long as others have said - pay as you play deal. I'm 90% sure his attitude of when he was last here would have changed. Its been a long time and he must have kids and be a bit more grown up now. Which should mean he has realistic wage demands as well. Why not?
hutch Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 A PAYP deal would protect the Club. From whom? BT? Doesn't that answer the question?
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Lets face it, if he could get fit he'd be a decent backup option. If Lambert is injured we have no one to play that role. No one's saying give him a 3 year contract, pay as you play with a retainer he'd be reasonable. Get him in until Jan and see what shape he's in. Give him a challenge and see whether he's up to it: take Rickie's place if you can...
Saints67 Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Having seen Jay Rodriguez first hand on saturday I would think taking a punt on a freebie like Beattie was a no brainer.
warsash saint Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He is cerainly a lot leaner than when he first played for us. No brainer - get him in.
hughieslastminutegoal Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He couldn't play our style of football. He isn't a "old Lambert". I don't think Beattie is an intelligent enough footballer. I remember his dazed appearance for England - he didn't have a clue where to stand or where to run to. It was embarrassing.
mikee Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Saw him at the ex-saints game on Sunday - he was there with his wife and kids. I asked him where he would be playing this year and he said "nowhere, I am enjoying some time with the family". Clearly any offer from Saints would suit him best but i don't think that we are really interested. No harm in letting him train with us, just to have a look at him and how he might fit into the squad, but personally, whilst I loved him when he was here, right now i would prefer a younger pacier striker to have on the bench.
old_southy Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Squad is harmonised right now, I can only see him detracting from that.
sambosa75 Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Just seems like an absolute no brainer. He is a goal scorer at this level given the right service. With our creativity he would get on the end of enough chances I am sure. I'm not saying go ahead and sign him but surely an invite to train for a couple of weeks would suit all. If he brings his "billy big balls" attitude as others have called it, I'm sure Nige will give him the "thanks but no thanks" treatment. If he comes in, knuckles down and does well then we have a player who up until 2 or 3 years ago was this divisions top scorer.
SNSUN Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 No thanks, there must be better loan options should we need another striker before January imo. As a free, I'd rather take El Hadji Diouf anyway, just.
speed demon Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 I wonder whether it could actually be a good move for both parties. He knows that many will probably be saying he is over the hill or past his best and may be determined to prove them wrong. With the motivational skills of NA and being the big cheese that BT thinks he is, he is not going to want to come here to underperform and everyone say I told you so. He will want to prove a point. Unless we know for sure that it is a no, I wouldn't be suprised if there is a chance of it happening. The stumbling block as is usually the case will be dosh.
Fan The Flames Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 I don't think NC is interested in assisting ex-Saints, we are not a charity and freeloaders won't be tolerated, the future is more important than the past.
Graffito Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 If anyone can get the best out of what's left in Beattie it's Adkins but as someone above noted, the fact that it's now in the Echo probably means it isn't going to happen.
Mowgli Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He was injured at rangers, i saw him on saturday in town with his wife and he looked as fit as a butchers dog ! In my experience butcher's dogs are overweight and lazy. Something to do with scraps being readily available. If he had to work for the scraps he would be stuffed. It obviously makes sense for a guy to be much fitter now he is not training every day! He is a much nicer person now and has a happy marriage and 3 cracking kids and would like to be here ,I don't think money is an issue but the dressing room I don't know. As for the Marmite analogy my son says yes my nephew says no ! Shouldn't we be actually assessing his ability to play football and score goals??? Otherwsie I can think of several 'nice' ex-players we could sign!
Badger Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Beattie with his sensible and sober head on, rather than the 'muffin man' head, would be a good option as back up providing he knows his limitations at 33 and does not expect to be the main man anymore. But having just issued his job application via the Echo, I suspect the door will be truly bolted if it wasn't before, as we no longer conduct our business in this way.
Minty Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Just out of interest, where does he live now?
Crab Lungs Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 We should write him off like we did Holmes, Hooiveld, Connolly and back in 0708, Lallana.
Big_Bald_Si Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Anyone else like the quote from the Echo? Beattie would "love" to return to Saints. One word quote. lol Doubt they've even spoken to him.
Pugwash Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Where's Pilchards when you need him? There's a development game going on the moment - is JB on the bench?
Eastcowzer Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Why condemn the man without giving him a trial. How many posters passed similar comments about David Connolly, and others. Q:- Does anybody else note a facial similarity between Beattie and Hammond , or is my vision becoming impaired.
once_bitterne Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Sheff Utd took a look at him but said he was too far away from being fit to play.
Saint_lambden Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 Not the type of striker we're looking for IMO. We need someone with pace. Thanks for the memories Beatts, but no thanks.
Lighthouse Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He'd also need to be OK playing second fiddle to Lambert. No, he shouldn't. He should be wanting to be in the team ahead of Lambert and determined to prove his worth. I don't want anyone in our squad who is okay playing second fiddle to anyone. Also, there will be game where having 2 big lumps up front could be useful. Would welcome him back on a trial to prove his worth.
scotty Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 If you want to draw similarity with rangers hooveld couldn't get in the Celtic team either Thats a very fair comment, and a point I hadnt thought of. Still think Beatts is a bit of a non-starter here myself, though.... BUT....in Nigel we trust!! If he thinks Beatts can do a job, so be it.
Huntingdon Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 He's clearly settling back into life down here I'd be interested to know if he's had any offers at all, or just wants to sit back & wait for top wages. Because, if he just wants to play football, I'm surprised Bournemouth haven't enquired as to what wages he'd want. You'd think he'd be ideal for them, they need a proven scorer who can put themselves about
saintrich Posted 27 September, 2011 Posted 27 September, 2011 I see no problem in signing him on a one year deal as back up for Lambert.
