James Beattie

if a deal can be made that suits all parties then why not. Clearly he would need to prove his fitness and desire first.

This sounds reasonable enough to me!

As per all the other Beattie threads recently, there are people who will say he's past it now, or that we should not look back. However if he's up for it and his wage demands are ok, then why not.

Would be decent to have as back-up but two things worry me. Firstly, he will want a fair whack in terms of wages which he doesn't deserve. Secondly and more importantly, he has an attitude problem in terms of his ego. I'm more than happy for him to play second fiddle to Rickie if he doesn't bring that attitude with him which could harm the 'unity' we have built within our team.

Can't really see it happening. But stranger things have happened.

He couldn't get near a ****-poor Rangers side which speaks volumes.

No thanks.

Agree with this. Well past his best and seems to have fallen out with a number of the managers he has played for since leaving us. Would not be first choice, but I think HE would expect to at least be on the bench and with only five subs you run the risk of upsetting someone else and possibly further restricting the chances of some of the youngsters coming through. Relise that some are concerned as to what plan B is if something happens with Rickie but personally feel that the managment team is already thinking this through and don't see Beatts be part of that plan. If he was he has already been out of conttract for at least a month and we have not acted on it.

He was injured at rangers, i saw him on saturday in town with his wife and he looked as fit as a butchers dog !

He must be living back down here permanently because it's about the fifth time i've seen him.

Sign him up, he has a lot of points to prove and he needs a club, just as well he likes Saints.

Couldn't agree more with many of the responses on here. Definitely deserves a contract IF his fitness is good and he is prepared to fight for a place and be currently content sitting on the bench.

Pay as you play would be a great option. Same sort of deal structure as Hargreaves is on at City and I'm sure all parties would be satisfied.

Then he's going to struggle to find a club, IMO.

I doubt it. I reckon there'd easily be a lower NPC club or any in League 1 that would offer him a contract - obviously he'd have to take a wage cut, but it would still work out as more than a pay as you play deal if he can't get in the side.

Lets face it, if he could get fit he'd be a decent backup option. If Lambert is injured we have no one to play that role. No one's saying give him a 3 year contract, pay as you play with a retainer he'd be reasonable.

Agree with this. A PAYP deal would protect the Club. If it turns sour then he is free to move on. Sadly, now this has appeared in the Echo, I think that will end the chances of it happening, but I would do it. We do need a Lambert backup, and I don't want to spend daft money on Rodrigues or Maynard to get a backup for RL.

Get him in until Jan and see what shape he's in. Give him a challenge and see whether he's up to it: take Rickie's place if you can...

Saw him at the ex-saints game on Sunday - he was there with his wife and kids.

I asked him where he would be playing this year and he said "nowhere, I am enjoying some time with the family".

Clearly any offer from Saints would suit him best but i don't think that we are really interested.

No harm in letting him train with us, just to have a look at him and how he might fit into the squad, but personally, whilst I loved him when he was here, right now i would prefer a younger pacier striker to have on the bench.

Just seems like an absolute no brainer. He is a goal scorer at this level given the right service. With our creativity he would get on the end of enough chances I am sure. I'm not saying go ahead and sign him but surely an invite to train for a couple of weeks would suit all. If he brings his "billy big balls" attitude as others have called it, I'm sure Nige will give him the "thanks but no thanks" treatment. If he comes in, knuckles down and does well then we have a player who up until 2 or 3 years ago was this divisions top scorer.

I wonder whether it could actually be a good move for both parties. He knows that many will probably be saying he is over the hill or past his best and may be determined to prove them wrong. With the motivational skills of NA and being the big cheese that BT thinks he is, he is not going to want to come here to underperform and everyone say I told you so. He will want to prove a point.

Unless we know for sure that it is a no, I wouldn't be suprised if there is a chance of it happening.

The stumbling block as is usually the case will be dosh.

In my experience butcher's dogs are overweight and lazy. Something to do with scraps being readily available. If he had to work for the scraps he would be stuffed. It obviously makes sense for a guy to be much fitter now he is not training every day!

He is a much nicer person now and has a happy marriage and 3 cracking kids and would like to be here ,I don't think money is an issue but the dressing room I don't know. As for the Marmite analogy my son says yes my nephew says no !

Shouldn't we be actually assessing his ability to play football and score goals??? Otherwsie I can think of several 'nice' ex-players we could sign!

Beattie with his sensible and sober head on, rather than the 'muffin man' head, would be a good option as back up providing he knows his limitations at 33 and does not expect to be the main man anymore.

But having just issued his job application via the Echo, I suspect the door will be truly bolted if it wasn't before, as we no longer conduct our business in this way.

He'd also need to be OK playing second fiddle to Lambert.

No, he shouldn't. He should be wanting to be in the team ahead of Lambert and determined to prove his worth. I don't want anyone in our squad who is okay playing second fiddle to anyone. Also, there will be game where having 2 big lumps up front could be useful.

Would welcome him back on a trial to prove his worth.

If you want to draw similarity with rangers hooveld couldn't get in the Celtic team either

Thats a very fair comment, and a point I hadnt thought of.

Still think Beatts is a bit of a non-starter here myself, though.... BUT....in Nigel we trust!! If he thinks Beatts can do a job, so be it.

He's clearly settling back into life down here

I'd be interested to know if he's had any offers at all, or just wants to sit back & wait for top wages.

Because, if he just wants to play football, I'm surprised Bournemouth haven't enquired as to what wages he'd want.

You'd think he'd be ideal for them, they need a proven scorer who can put themselves about
