Professor Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Good to see Saints as the first match on the Show. Beats last year when sometimes you had to wait 'til the 40th minute. Can't criticise the players for not getting another goal when you see how close the strikes from Lamberts and Lallana were, but also showed why Lallana was so angry after his shot went past the post because he was clearly pushed in the back coming into the area. So more cheating by a professional footballer - this time a Burnley defender - missed by a professional referee. If you stayed on to watch the Brighton/Leeds game there was more cheating missed when Mackail-Smith threw himself down in the area and the referee was conned into awarding a penalty. Its a pity the Football League Show doesn't do more to highlight that refereeing mistakes have too much impact on the game and the FA rule that prevents fouls being punished after the games if there was a refereeing error, just encourages the cheats. Players know that if they can con the ref they will have got away with it, even when the cameras show the truth. Its only if the ref misses something altogether that action can be taken afterwards. There was an example in the Forest game when Derbyshire's dive was seen by the assistant and the referee gave a yellow card, but when you saw on TV how blatent the dive was, if the ref had seen that himself, he would surely have given a red, but after the event nothing is done because of FA rules. Come on BBC, lets have a campaign through the football league show to highlight all the cheating that players are getting away with.

Diving is a cautionable offence in the laws of the game, referees can't give a straight red for it.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Diving is a cautionable offence in the laws of the game, referees can't give a straight red for it.And there is the problem right there ! If Refs were able to straight red someone for diving, players might cut it out?
Fan The Flames Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Refs have enough problems making that split decision about a dive, force them to have to give a red and they will be even more reluctant to call a dive.

bangkoksaint Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 having been at the game yesterday I thought the ref was okay. He let a lot go but for both sides. He seemed to embrace the fact football is a physical game and let them get on with it.

Professor Posted 25 September, 2011 Author Share Posted 25 September, 2011 I didn't know a player can't be shown red for diving, but if blatant cheating isn't enough for a player to be sent off that shows why cheating has become the norm. The BBC could campaign against cheating by the way they show it and if this is true, pointing out how the rules treat it lightly. But will they, when they don't want to lose the TV rights? So self-interest and corruption can all play a part in supporting the cheats.
so22saint Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 I think the laws are actually ok - it's the application of the laws that's the problem. Referees never seem to yellow card anybody for dissent, and diving goes unpunished all the time. If there was a crackdown - say first 5 games of next season the FA let it be known that the laws will be strictly applied then a) there would be carnage - Terry or Rooney would go for 2 bookables for dissent in the first 45 of the first game but b) we might see the game played more cleaning. Of course due to c) the massive outcry in the media and from the PFA it'll never happen
beatlesaint Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Claridge does seem to rate us, bet that upsets the blue few down the road ! I dont know what that Bashir guy was on about saying our players are inexperienced in this League. Eight of the starters have played there or higher before and ten of the finishing line up have ! VectisSaint Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Skate Claridge has a lot of good things to say about Saints?? I think he's converting ! Claridge has nearly always said good things about Saints. It is a myth that he hates us. He is actually very fair in his assessment of teams, unfortauntely for him he lacks personality to go any better than the FL Show, yet he is a better pundit than the Slug Balancer or Hanson will ever be. The9 Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 For the first half hour I thought he'd lost his whistle. There's letting the game flow, but he let too much go on both sides. Agreed. He should have booked a few as well, three or four blatant pull-backs which were bolted-on yellows, not giving those meant it carried on into the last few seconds and basically cost us the win in the 93rd minute. Bad Wolf Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Claridge lives close to me in Park Gate. I see him atleast once a week out and about, lovely guy he is. Speaks very highly of Saints (and actually always has). I usually say nothing more than "Hi Steve, how are you?" to him but if he's in the CO OP line at the same time as me, I have a chat with him. Said the other day he's actually seen more of Saints this season than he has of P*mpey. Don't understand the constent Claridge slating on here, since he became a pundit he's never really said anything neagative about Saints other than when they've deserved it. Great guy IMO. About the game itself, a lot of posts on this thread say 'how did we not win?' but tbf Burnley fans will be saying the same thing. I didn't go to the game but on that evidance it looks like they had the better chances. Decent away point IMO.

And those that were "goaded" by a footballer responding to abusive behaviour in the most appropriate way that he can by scoring a goal possibly should consider who has the moral high ground. Dalek2003 Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Claridge is a very good commentator and always gives a fair assessment of Saints. Some people get on their high horse and are totally blinkered. Probably the same ones that made all the noise in 2004 over the appointment of Hoddle, and thus condemning us to relegation. Lord Duckhunter Posted 26 September, 2011 Share Posted 26 September, 2011 Claridge was alos head and shoulders above anyone else at the Sakte forum last season. Asking "why would anyone buy your club" and similar unbiased statements. He upset the Blue Few who felt he should have been more positive about their club. Claridge says it how it is, and I wish there were more like him.
saint.tom.clancy Posted 26 September, 2011 Share Posted 26 September, 2011 I dont see much clardige bashing? Rarely gets mentioned on here unless its about the football league show. I rate him as a pundit, talks a bit of sense. Looks like a pikey in real life though - always see him at hedge end ladbrokes in his full adidas tracksuit, a true skate. He may have upset many of them - but he was absolutely correct in his appreciation of the club. For me the more Claridges and Savages on pundit teams the better. That said I still think that Aunty Beeb will gag most of the more intersting stuff that they want to say.
