SaintJackoInHurworth Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 We have had a great record under Nigel Adkins and it is understandable why he has such great support among fans at present. However, as a fan living in the North of England, I am generally only able to see matches up north and I am therefore acutely aware that our record under Adkins at this end of the country has been generally quite poor. Here are the stats for last season after Adkins was appointed in September: 25/9 Sheff Wed: Won 1-0 16/10 Huddersfield Lost 2-0 13/11 Carlisle Lost 3-2 11/1 Oldham Won 6-0 22/1 Tranmere Lost 2-0 22/2 Hartlepool Drew 0-0 12/4 Rochdale Lost 4-0 i.e.: P W D L F A Pts 7 2 1 4 9 11 7 (nb it's worth bearing in mind how bad it would look without the Oldham win) Adding in this season, there are the following two results: 13/8 Barnsley Won 1-0 24/9 Burnley Drew 1-1 So the 'table' would look like this: P W D L F A Pts 9 3 2 4 11 12 8 So, why is our recent record against Northern teams relatively-speaking (i.e. in comparison to our other results) so bad? dubai_phil Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Clearly Jet Lag. We fly up to northern games. Obviously the air conditioning/cramped seats or lack of free drinks on FlyBe is to blame
Ewell Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 We lost 2-0 at Rochdale. I honestly do not think the record is that bad. OK it is not brilliant but when you consider most teams pick up at least 40 points per season you are always going to lose a certain amount of away matches especially the further you travel. That is not even taking into consideration some of the poor pitches and facilities that challenged us in some of those fixtures. The record is only worth looking at in the current season and so far we are unbeaten so maybe we have turned a corner?
um pahars Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Interesting. Might not be enough in it given the sample size, but then again there might be something there to try and work on - travel arrangements, hotels, training facilities, psychological issues. In the current game where the magrin for error is so smal it might be worth trying to eek out those extra %s. What is the comparison with say, London games, or Southern away games (you'd imagine they would be stronger)?
oldsarum Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 So the 'table' would look like this: P W D L F A Pts 9 3 2 4 11 12 8 So, why is our recent record against Northern teams relatively-speaking (i.e. in comparison to our other results) so bad? it's not great, but also not as bad as you make out, for a start we only lost 2-0 at Rochdale, stats should be P W D L F A Pts 9 3 2 4 11 10 11 so more than a point a game which isn't too bad
MongoNeil Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Although not strictly a 'northern game', we lost at Walsall last season too. The reason we lost at all those grounds last season is because those are the games my missus came too. she only ever saw us lose last season, she was going to come to the Oldham game but couldn't last minute and you saw what happened there. Rest assured I have taken the appropriate action and banned her for all northern games (we seem to win if she watches us play in the south). We we're going to go to Burnley but decided not to in the end, this probably made the lads have a bad performance for which I can only apologise.
