To get away from the other stuff.....We have another game coming up on Wednesday, a tricky one too at Cardiff.

They play tomorrow live on sky against Leicester, so we get a chance to see them up close.

I don't think they're as bag a threat as they've been in recent years, but they're still strong at their new place and it will be one of the toughest places we travel to this season.

I'd like to see NA shake it up a little, and I think he probably will.

My team...:

Davis

Frazer - Fonte - Jos - Fox

Ridder - Cork - Deano - Lallana

Lambert - Conners

This is going to be my first away game so very excited!

I agree with S-Clarke's team

Think after today morgan will take deanos place.

would be very happy with a draw

What he said. This will be our toughest game yet this season, a point would be a good solid result.

Looking forward to this one.....anyone know of any decent pubs near the ground?

Last time we went to Cardiff (admitedly at the old ground) I asked a copper the same question. He 'advised' me to to go straight into the ground and have a beer there. The ground isn't in the best part of Cardiff, and they don't like the English much at the best of times...

Then they should f*ck off and join the Welsh League. Problem solved.

Tough game, a point would be acceptable if followed by a home win Saturday.

Schneirderlin has earned the shirt for the next game and Fox and Richardson are good at getting forward so they can provide the width for this game

Absolutely no chance of Hammond being dropped, and it's very unfair that people are so ready to dispense with him after one below-par performance in a game full of below-par performances.

I think a lineup like this would suit us well for this game:

Frazer----------Jos-----------Fonte--------------Fox

------------Morgan-----Cork----Hammond------------

-----De Ridder ---------Lambert-----------Lallana---

Not sure its so much that as wether Chaplow or Morgan have earned a starting place with their recent performances.

We have got 4 top central midfield players remember and Cork is/should be a definite so its then 1 from 3.

Going to be really tough. Agree with bringing Schneiderlin in as the ball playing midfielder and trying to nick something from it rather than going there and trying to play as a home game (eg wide, attacking, full backs bombing on). We need to be measured and pack out the midfield because players like Whittingham and Cowie will enjoy the possession.

One thing that will affect us will be Conway out wide. If he plays on the right, I can't help but feel that Fox may be slightly exposed due to his attacking mentality.

Of course, Miller and Earnshaw are international strikers so their movement is going to be some of be best we'll face this season. Hooiveld and Fonte need to stay alert, keep talking and stay on their toes. Also no dodgy passing out from the back from Kelvin would help!

Think we're gonna get beaten here. 2-1 to Cardiff.

nothing to fear from what i've just seen. Not a lot between them but Leciester better side, plus they picked up a fair few injuries, with the extra day we have to recover and prepare we should be looking at at least a draw

I live locally so looking forward to this one - 10 minutes front door to ground! So more of a home game even though I have a season ticket and do most away trips!

To be honest there is very little in then vicinity of the ground that would be sensible. If you want a pub then your best going into the centre as it's not far on train or taxi to the ground, or just go straight in - it will be a much better experience inside than ninian park was. I think there might be a sports club about 5 minutes walk from the ground, opposite fitzalan school that will allow home and away fans drink together, but that's it. I will be having a pint or two with a saints supporting mate in my local before doing the brief train ride, but that's in penarth so a but of a faff for anyone travelling to the game as it's past the ground and on the wrong side of Cardiff.

Chaplow Hammond Cork Lallana

Guly Lambert

Don't know if its a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3/4-5-1 or or what. But would play Guly upfront with lambert as per last season (when he went on his scoring run),then allow him and Adam to float around as they have done with great effect this season; Chaplow steps in to give the midfield a bit more protection (as well as the ability to get forward thst a midfield of Cork/Schneiderlin/Deano might not). Would rest Connolly - has lacked a bit of penetration recently; but his intelligent running would be a perfect option from the bench as Cardiff tire and the game opens up. De Ridder instead of Guly might be a gamble too far at this stage; but would look to bring him on sooner rather than later if we're short of pace (which stood out yesterday).

Think Cardiff might be a bit volunerable with a few injuries so im going for a 3-1 win! COYR!!

I doubt Saints have spent £1.8m as a Championship club on Fox for him not to be first choice.
Exactly. Fox is definitely going to be our first choice at the moment. Can put a cracking cross in, but not sure how good he is defensively though.

Whoever plays on the wings is going to need to ensure that they support the full back defensively, with the Cardiff fullbacks, particularly McNaughton, looking to get forwards when possible. This said, there will consequently be gaps in the Cardiff defense that we can look to exploit on the counter attack. For this reason it may be good to have De Ridder's pace, though I don't think he will start.

I'd like to see something like this:

---------------Davis---------------

Richardson--Fonte--Hooiveld--Fox

--------Morgan--Hammond--------

---------------Cork-----------------

----------Connolly--Lallana--------

-------------Lambert---------------

With the 3 CMs giving the defense support when Cardiff are attacking, doubling up on the wings and also nullifying Whittingham a bit, but still enough going forward to cause them plenty of problems.

Defensively I think Fox is more then adequate 1 on 1, but I would question some of his positioning. He does seem to get drawn towards the CB's, leaving a lot of room in behind. He can be a real threat going forward though as mentioned.

Of course, one reason that FBs are drawn to a CB is that they're worried about getting beaten/skinned for pace in a 1 on 1 if they go up close.

Fox has got a great cross/delivery -some of his inswingers from corners yesterday were unplayable while even Lambert deferred to him last week with a free-kick in a shooting position - that spoke volumes. But I would like him to bring the ball up further, commit his man and get to the line. That's something that Harding and even Dickson are willing to do on a frequent basis (though I guess, it matters less if, like Fox, you can deliver the ball well, even from deep positions).

no goal for connolly in what 4 games?? IMO This is where we should now have someone knocking on the door, a le fonre, rodriguez, maynard, beckford etc.

My team

Davis

Richardson JOS Fonte Cox

Chaplow Cork Schneiderlain Lallana

De Ridder Lambert

Our weakness on Saturday was the width with which Burnley played. We need to have wide players on the pitch to combat that, as Cardiff will play wide too, with their full-backs overlapping.

RICHARDSON------FONTE------HOOIVELD------FOX

DE RIDDER------MORGAN-------CORK------LALLANA

----------------LAMBERT------GULY---------------

Subs: Bart, Butterfield, Martin, Hammond, Connolly

Pretty sure EoA ain't travelling down for this one so expect a more cohesive performance and could even get the passing game going again so could sneak this one.

Will have a late fitness test down here though. TSW member in town so it's Tuesday night out. Wed may be a bit of a blur and a struggle to stay up late enough!

Still do not think De Ridder will start, he has the game but made poor decisions in the CC game, ran into closed alleys and missed glaringly obvious balls into players in free space around the box. (source DM during the commentary)

A 4 man mifield with Lallana (or Guly) in the hole similar to how we started the CC game could be an option, but in reality although it didn't work well at Burnley, our basic starting line up didn't actually LOSE the game.

Posted

Would settle for a draw here, but if those injuries Cardiff picked up yesterday are still niggling their players then might upgrade to a win!!!!

Think it will be a tough terst regardless and could see Adkins playing a more defensive minded line up (e.g. Guly out and Spiderman or Chaplow starting).

Posted

Several team predictions that would drop Connolly and some changing the formation, but personally doubt Adkins will agree with any of that. DC is our only proven prem class player and although others may have the capability, DC has the t-shirt. Despite what Adkins says about the squad, he's got his favoured first 11 now and doesn't seem interested in a rotation policy except for the Carling Cup games and he seems to prefer changing the format during a game not from game to game. Maybe a below-par performance by Hammond and Schneiderlin's goal could cause a change there and maybe Fox has replaced Harding in the first 11 after a run of 3 league games, even if DH is fit now, but my guess is the same line-up that started at Burnley.

I normally drive mate. I have another mate who comes more often than not too so

We normally alternate. There are several others I know that go but they often have family/friends etc to visit on the weeks snack in Southampton, so we all tend to make our own way. Mid week games, there is usually a car full from Cardiff go down though.
