Aardvark Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 Look at today's Times Sport section -page 8. According to the "scientific" Fink Tank" Saints have 64% chance of automatic promotion. Middlesborough and West Ham trail 2nd and 3rd with 36% and 35% respectively. WTF!? See the bit about Saints as a League 1 team last season being "better than most in the Barclays Premier League" - Again, WTF!? Any thoughts? Saintandy666 Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 I would love to know how such statistics are formulated. Is this based on form so far or what?
S-Clarke Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 TBF I don't think we're too far away from teams like Wigan, Newcastle, Bolton, Blackburn etc - and I reckon we'd stand a pretty good chance of beating any of those at home. Aardvark Posted 24 September, 2011 Author Share Posted 24 September, 2011 I would love to know how such statistics are formulated. Is this based on form so far or what? It claims to be. I can see how we would be seen as well in amongst the front runners (see other threads about our incredible form stretching back to xmas), but 64% seems strangely absurd to me. Window Cleaner Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 Jos says we're good enough for the Champions League Probably based on the fact that Celtic play in it and that we are no doubt better than them. Scottish football is an aberration, they get 2 places and we only get 4. Any EPL team could beat Celtic and Rangers and a handful of NPC teams could as well. Aardvark Posted 26 September, 2011 Author Share Posted 26 September, 2011 Jos says we're good enough for the Champions League Had to laugh at the sickly gushing presenter on Solent just before the Birmingham game, who with an obvious ignorance and lack of affection for football, announced that, "Southampton's football team had made a great start to the season and were currently 2nd in the Champions League". We were actually 3rd at the time.

stcappy Posted 26 September, 2011 Share Posted 26 September, 2011 I happened to meet a friend of Neil eardley the balckpool full back last march, and who played against us in the cup tie. Neil had reported back straight after we beat them via text that he thought we were well above league 1 and more like a championship team pushing for promotion. Then revised that a couple of days later after hearing Adkins say how many changes we made to our starting line up that day too. He thought our first team, albeit without having played against it, but working on the basis it was better than what he played against, would be as competitive as Blackpool if not more so in the premier league. He was extemely impressed already with us last January.

NY Saint Posted 26 September, 2011 Share Posted 26 September, 2011 I'm a Saints fan therefore I'm conditioned to expect the rug to be pulled from under me at some point before the end of the season, so I'm erring on the side of pessimism. I'd love to have seen the Fink Tank predictions for the last few seasons to see how accurate it actually is but its a nice distraction.
KK the 2nd Posted 26 September, 2011 Share Posted 26 September, 2011 I think its nonsense. We are currently around 6/4 for promotion with the bookies which includes going up via the playoffs. So taking account of the bookies margin and the possibility of going up via the playoffs I reckon it is more like a 25% to 30% chance. Still, very happy with that. Windmill Arm 2 Posted 26 September, 2011 Share Posted 26 September, 2011 People should remain grounded, just because Norwich managed it does not mean it will now become the norm. An injury to Connolly Lallana or Lambert will see us fooked IMO. I also believe Cardiff will beat us on Weds, we haven't really played anyone decent yet. Having just been promoted I would be pleased with play-offs.
