pressingon Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 Given yet another reference to the freebie culture in the NC interview today reminded me that when LMac was manager a friend of mine's father worked with him & the players. He told me that the club gave LMac an interest free loan to buy his house, a free car and basically paid for everything-utility bills/petrol/food shop/laundry etc. meaning his wages were just spending money. I don't know if any of this is true or if it is how common it was/still is but if people work in that sort of bubble I can imagine continued "freebies" could be an expectation and it would be a shock to be brought back to "our world"
The Kraken Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 I think you'd be surprised at the amount of freeloaders and hangers-on there are within the game, at any club. That SFC decided to do something about it was, IMO, nothing bad. That said, there are some players who, IMO, deserve to afforded a free ticket for every single game from here to the end of time. Not many of them, but the likes of MLT, Franny, Jason Dodd, Lawrie Mac, Jimmy Case. Fair enough limit the number of free tickets they can have to 1 (and they should pay for any more that they want), but we should show at least some respect to past heroes IMO. Yes, why on earth not? That's of course exactly the same thing. Good analogy.
georgeweahscousin Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 As I said in the other thread If they personally want to attend games, then I agree they should be guests and treated as such. But. If they want to phone up and get freebie tickets for friends etc. then I am with NC on that one.

I totally agree with Cortese's sentiment of clamping down on the amount of freebies that went out of the club; but there are some ex-players (not many) who, IMO, deserve a free match ticket for life. As I've said, I'm talking of the likes of MLT, Franny, Jason Dodd, Lawrie Mac, Jimmy Case; like I say, not many at all. Also, one of the best experiences I had at the club was a day in the Ambassador's Lounge. Hosted by Lawrie Mac, he invites some of his former players to join him, give a little speech, basically regale about the old times. We've now lost all that, and I can't help but feel the cutting away of that history must have an effect on the dwindling hospitality we're seeing at the club as it's all becoming a bit too sterile (and I have done the hospitality since then so I have a basis in comparison). Trouble is once you allow even one how do you differentiate between our past heroes I'm sure some of my age group would vote for Big Ron,Paine, Sydenham,Williams,Channon etc above Franny,Dodd & Case-of course we would all say MLT At the end of the day I think they should all pay unless in an official capacity. Crazy Diamond Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 It got particularly bad when Redknapp was in charge. One of the first things Burley did was to place restrictions on who was allowed in the tunnel at full time for example.

Back then, football (and other businesses) often did extras for their stars (it was also a very good tax dodge).

Strange list of deserving cases, of that lot only MLT & Lawrie would seem reasonable (Jimmy Case would have to fit it in between his visits to Liverpool and Brighton, I see he was on the pitch on Wednesday at the Amexdean or whatever it is called). The likes of Mick Channon, Terry Paine, Ron Davies, Danny Wallace, far more deserving (and several others), and therein lies the problem. Who is and who is not deserving? The answer is no-one should be entitled to free tickets. Instead ex-players (ex-managers as well, would that include Mr Branfoot?) should be invited as guests by the club. This of course is what is happening (Terry Paine recently, the FA Cup winners last season, hopefully soon Big Ron) to those who show respect for the club. Those who are less than respectful strangely do not seem to get the invitations.
Webby Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 Things is, why give freebies to those that can afford to pay? Doesn't make sense to me. We can respect saints legends in other ways, surely? They're part of the clubs history but I don't see why they should given free tickets.

At least with the 'no freebies' policy there can be no abuse.

La BoIS Saint Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 Have you noticed the number of empty seats in the corporate section? Not exactly depriving anyone if they give a few freebies out.
Macey_J2 Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 To be fair, we've got a box specifically for ex-players. They get chosen by the club and have the whole experience of a box for free. I understand its not the same as calling up and asking for 20 free tickets but i think its a good thing for the club to do to remember the players. Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 Why should anyone get free tickets when they can certainly afford them? I really don't understand why someone would want ten free tickets for what are, in reality, hangers on. I have all the respect in the world for Matty but, come on, he isn't exactly short of a few bob. If there are any free tickets to be had, then they should go to charities or the disadvantaged; not people who don't need a handout. I remember someone from Kent who went to every away match and hung around outside to get complimentary tickets from players. He rarely, if ever, paid and I recall one occasion when he had bought tickets to an away match (Blackburn IIRC) and was doing his usual sponging and managed to bag a couple of comps. He then went round to the ticket office and told them that the ticket holders had been involved in an accident on the way to the match and were in hospital and could he have a refund for them. He got it. Bastard. You know who you are.
Miffy Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 Everyone should pay for ticket. Everyone should grow up and STFU about it (including NC, MLT, posters on this forum and me) Can all these threads be combined into one? I'm ******ed off trawling through them trying to find other more interesting topics.
