Mr X Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I know there is little we can do about it but I cant help feeling brighton really have couped the best player in the league and tonights game has re-inforced that, not sure how serious saints were in their interest in him? I really feel we need to bring someone of that calibre in. Thoughts?

for_heaven's_Saint Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Well I watched the Leeds match and personally don't think he was that great. Good at the instinctive poacher stuff but nowhere near as influential as Connolly and Lambert are in our build up play. With time on the ball he didn't look like he had the quality. Not even in the top 10 best players in the league.
Mowgli Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Is he the right sort of character to fit in here though? A bit of a fancy Dan. Maybe thinks he is better than he is (he is good but maybe not as good as he thinks he is...)

Crab Lungs Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Quality player, great work ethic. Rather him than Rodriguez or Maynard as I think he'll suit our style/attitude better. That said, it's gone now.
S-Clarke Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Who would he play in front of? Interesting that he had no answer to that. Think that says it all. He's a good player, yep, but to be honest I prefer the types of striker we're looking at as long-term premiership quality players - and our squad at the mo is good enough. itchen_dan Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I really rate McCormack. Thought he was brilliant tonight. Great touch, brilliant movement, pace and 2 brilliant goals. First one was a superb strike and second was great anticipation to get to an area in the box where he thought it may fall. 8/9 goals this season so far - would be perfect alongside Lambert. CanadaSaint Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Nice enough player but someone like that changes the whole focus of your attacking play, and I'm more than happy with the multiple focuses we have. He couldn't play in our team unless our team changes its style to accommodate him. That's one great, big No Thanks.
Colinjb Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 He is a damned good striker but that ship has sailed, he could have filled in the gap many sense in our striking options but the ship has sailed. No use for tears on that, especially as I am confident that our best strikers provide at least as good an option. Smirking_Saint Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 No better then Barnard could be at the top of his game. And Barnard is an aweful lot younger than CMS. Don't get me wrong I think he is a decent player, but IMO his fantastic workrate makes up for questionable technique, he was never worth how much Brighton paid, he is a decent player for them but certainly not the 'Best player' in a league that holds such players as Carlton Cole, Nolan, Lallana, Cork etc etc And S-Clark, TBF to Mr X, he only has 3 posts a day. sfc4prem Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I think CMS misses more chances than he scores. I think Barnard is a better finisher and a very similar type of player, that said, he doesn't have Craig's pace.

LostBoys Posted 24 September, 2011 Share Posted 24 September, 2011 I thought he played well tonight hard working and took his chances. Village Saint Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 I think your trying to kid yourself Of course he would be on the bench. Before Friday we had 4 players who had score more league goals this season including the best player by a LONG way in this division. CMS is a good player but not one we needed for the starting line-up and at 5m was not a bargain. Quite why people are obsessing about this I have no idea. Rather than worry about this, have a look at the league table or even better why not get along to St Marys and watch the team. You will find that they are playing some quite nice football! CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 25 September, 2011 Share Posted 25 September, 2011 A team with forwards of the caliber of Ricky Lambert and Mackail-Smith at its disposal would score 50 goals a season from those two alone. If you could keep them both fit, you'd be almost guaranteed automatic promotion I'd have thought. A missed opportunity then ? ... You'd have to know what went on behind-the-scenes to be sure, but quite possibly.

I thought he was only about half that, and at that half price thought he was a good buy for Brighton. I certainly would have been interested and would have him in front of Barnard, but in two minds about playing in front of Connoly who has started this season where he left off last season. Would he have been prepared to be third choice and battle for a start, would it have upset the balance, would he have fitted in with the squad, would he have got his chance with injuries suspensions, who knows??? Adkins was obviously looking for a striker, so would be interesting to know if he was ever considered.
