david in sweden Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 ..even on the bench?. I know ..never change a winning side, and I go along with that, too. But more than a few people have noted the excellence of Lee Holmes recent play and his accurate crossing. Sadly, quite a lot of people had (rather prematurely) written-off Holmes after his unfortunate run of injuries.. (as some did about David Connolly - before he got a few games under his belt and started scoring regularly). Now it seems we are seeing the best of Holmes - albeit rather belatedly. Q- Should Holmes be a regular sub.on the bench in favour of someone else- if so who ? It seems that Nigel Adkins' biggest problem is not picking the first team, but who he puts on the bench...with the hope of 30 mins. run-out as a deserved reward. doddisalegend Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Lees had a couple of semi decent games against lower league oppostion unless Adam gets injuried (god forbid) I can't see him getting a place.
scott_saints Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Probably our best player. Just ashame he spends so much time in the treatment room. Or is that Connolly?
ant Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Delivers a good cross, but does he offer enough on top of that to make the starting XI?
norwaysaint Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Bit odd that the OP was so specific saying he wasn't asking about a starting place, but about whether there was a place for him on the bench, yet the replies so far say he shouldn't be in the first eleven and shouldn't replace Lallana, a bit irrrelevant. In reply to what was actually asked, I'd love to see him get a chance, but Dickson has the defensive option and De Ridder would probably be the winger of choice from the bench. Holmes might just suffer from the fact that we haven't really missed him while he's been injured, so nobody's really bothered about him.
Avenue Saint Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Have noticed his improved performances of late and he seems like a valuable option to have in squad. As for putting him on bench, is extremely difficult to juggle it rightly with this stupid sub rule!

SaintDan Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I agree with the comments about Holmes being strong going forward however on Wednesday night his general control was poor often losing the ball or the ball rolling out of play. He also didn't look comfortable on the right hand side in the second half (not his natural position I know). I think he is a good squad player but will need to be replaced with better should we get promotion this season/challenge for promotion next season as I dont think he's enough cover for the quality Lallana offers. TBH I was a little disappointed we didn't get Wade Elliott on the deadline day, allbeit he did nothing for Brum when he came on against us last week but as a local lad he would have been an excellent no 2 for Lallana. ottery st mary Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 It would be best for him to now go out on loan and play 3/4/5 games for another team and improve his match fitness. If able to get through said number of games could be considered as a sub/back up sub........the best he will get if he stays at Saints.. Never quite does it for me to be a first team match day squad player..... Injuries prevent him getting anywhere near a number of games in to achieve the next step up.... This has been the case ever since he joined us... Well done for getting fit and fighting your way back.......now get yourself a loan and see if you will ever play consistently at this level again...... Monk Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 yes... in another team. All seriousness, he does have something to offer and I would like to see named on the bench for a few Championship games.

Dalek2003 Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Holmes could be one of our best players, the trouble s he spends too much time in the treatment room.
the saint in winchester Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 He was ineffective second half on Wednesday when he was told to play on the right. Every time he cut back inside to keep it on his left, and the defender could read him. I'd rather play him on the left then he has the option of going outside the man to the byline. He was doing that first half and looked much better. Whether we could get Lala to play on the right to accommodate Holmes, I don't know.
locks heath saint 2 Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 You cannot compare Holmes with Connolly. The later is a class above Holmes is merely cover. I'd love to be proven wrong Holmes needs to get his a**e in gear. Or goodbye
Saint Lindford Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 He did well in the first half on the left on Wednesday night but did not much in the second apart from lay on Lallana's goal. CC only for me at the moment, De Ridder offers more versitility on the bench in League games as he can play up front if required.
Crab Lungs Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Quality player, shame he gets injured so much. If he was available more, he would have proved his talent to far more people by now.
SaintDonkey Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Holmes is a talented player who would be a mainstay of a half decent championship side by now if he wasn't made of glass. Nice bloke as well. A great pity

Didn't Holmes cross to Lallana for the winner from the right wing? The lad has a decent right peg on him and I think he has the potential to be a good player. The thing is, we are progressing too fast up the leagues for him to be given a real chance here.
mitch01 Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Big fan of Holmes, probably our best player in 08/09 season (not hard I know) before injury. Would like to see him get a run at some point, but with Guly, Lallana and de Ridder in front of him, he may not get a chance.
