He got his wish and we made a load of cash out of it. Good business all round.

Mick Channon got loads of stuff thrown at him when he returned for Man City.He was warming up and the fans started singing his name, he turned to give them a wave only to be bombarded with dogs abuse, lol
scott_saints Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I don't even care that he left "in the wrong way". Young lad trying to increase his chance of getting a better job. Fair play to him. Don't see why he should be viewed negatively compared to Walcott, Bale, Surman.
Saint Malc Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 The diffence between the Alex situation and others is he went to the press before any deal was concluded. I would, good naturedly, boo Alex as similarly I would, the biggest ar$e of the lot, Kenwyn Jones. It's football and it's been like that for donkeys (Kenwyn Jones) years and it ain't gonna change. Some people need to relax a bit as it's not going to affect Alex in the slightest and it's just a bit of fun.
warsash saint Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 So an 18 year old lad & has the chance to triple his wages & set himself up for life ... like you lot would not do the same given half a chance ??
Professor Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 So an 18 year old lad & has the chance to triple his wages & set himself up for life ... like you lot would not do the same given half a chance ?? Except he was happy enough to sign a contract with Saints which he then set about break through statements to the media, no doubt engineered by hangers-on who wanted to make money out of him themselves and following the example of Arsenal who had already made illegal approaches through the media. In the end it was Arsenals willingness to pay such a massive fee that allowed him to go as it seems likely that the club rejected the move for less. Fact is, Saints would have a stronger team if he was still here and he would have easily filled a slot in the premier side we hope to have soon, so his earnings would have had to have gone to the next level but all around him people were urging him to dump on Southampton so its not surprising thats what happened. But coming back afterwards to say how lovely we are leaves a bit of a bad taste. Oh, and Saints welcome people into the group almost as well as Arsenal do. So thats why Arsenal can't hold on to some of their players; its because they're such a nice welcoming group....and some of them even speak English....unless they are talking to the manager. alpine_saint Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I don't give a rat's arse about what's supposed to have happened because if it happened it was something his father organized. Booing and abusing an eighteen year-old on his return to this Club does indeed make someone look like a complete idiot, and that someone is not Alex. Unfortunately, all Saints fans get tarred with that moron's brush. While we're all rejoicing at the class shown by our team, we could at least think about showing some ourselves. Meeeeesa like this....
niceandfriendly Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I don't understand all this "he left in the wrong way", nonsense. The only thing I can think of was the ill-advised story he gave to the press just before his move, which was clearly the work of his cretin father, not AOC. On the day he signed for the Arse he was full of praise for us on the Arsenal website. Compare that to someone like Kevin Phillips who actually slated us on the day he left, now there's a player who deserves a boo. Booing AOC would just be weird. Or "just a bit of fun" as someone posted above... Ok mate, what ever floats your boat.

LostBoys Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Not interested in his views - he left us. I do not blame him for going as financial security at 18 is something we all would strive for. I hope he does well but as for his views who now cares - his life experience has been enriched not by money but by being dicked 8 2 on TV in front of millions
St Marco Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Will never boo the kid and don't blame him for wanting to leave and get a big pay cheque either. However i have no respect for him in the way in which he conducted himself. Especially with the rumour around that he told Adkins he was no longer going to play. With the comments his dad made it would seem true imo. The club said time and time again he was not for sale and Cortese rejected bids for him. The way he and his dad tried to force the move by talking to the media was pretty low. When the boy walked into the club at the age 7 there was no telling if he would be a good player. For the next 10 years our club looked after him and made him into what he is now. Soon as the big fish start swimming around he wants out. Personally i think he should of shown a bit more loyalty to the club. If he stayed for another season he would of progressed a lot. But as someone mentioned above it is his life experience. Would of been great to have seen him rip the championship up with us but we all move on. Wish him well but won't cheer him when he returns and won't boo him either. He is just another player now. Legod Third Coming Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 Nice article. I always clap an ex player when they come back, unless they were a complete tool. And he wasn't. The pantomime booing I think people should just chill out over. Shane Warne and KP give each other ludicrous verbals on the pitch. It doesn't stop them being best men for one another. Anyone who doesn't think football is a pantomime has clearly been away from the game for some time...
Dalek2003 Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 I can't see what the fuss is about. Arsenal get a good player and pay a fair price. We take players off clubs smaller than ourselves, that is the way of the pecking order. Those people who Lambast the players and ex managers clearly don't understand the way football works. Had they stayed at home in the Spring of 2004 we would have had Loddle back and probably would have avoided our near oblivion, but what do they care ? dune Posted 23 September, 2011 Share Posted 23 September, 2011 LOL. You're not mature enough to voice consistent opinions on anything so I'm neither surprised that you're on that side of the discussion nor bothered about your thoughts. But i'm mature enough not to give a **** if some fans want to boo Chamberlain or not, wheras you think you have the right to tell others what to do. Some of the comments on these threads about AOC are well over the top, Some people showing a real hatred for anyone who leaves Saints? We give abuse to former skates who play against us..so once a skate always a skate? Surely therefore once a saint always a saint should apply too? I think it shows a bit of class for fans to acknowledge a returning former player-but then to move on with supporting the current players very quickly from that. I'm not telling anyone what to do - I'm telling them that IMO they look like immature morons when they do it. Just as you look like a hypocrite with most of you posts. ray kemish Posted 7 October, 2011 Share Posted 7 October, 2011 Is it not possible to abuse a player in a respectful kind of way? I know it sounds daft, but even Bale, Theo, Bridgey, even MLT (if he'd gone somewhere else) would expect some serious stick on coming back to Saints! Surely if it done with a bit of tongue of cheek it is okay - indeed probably a recognition of how highly regarded the player is. By the way - none of the above applies to Kevin Phillips - but we do look a bunch of mongs with the grief we give him and his missus!
DanW Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 AOC gets a shoutout in this random sports ranking that I stumbled upon today. http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/10941/rankonia-the-triangle-power-rankings-5 No mention of Southampton, of course, but that's not the point. I'd like to think our coaches taught him those moves.

As did Bridge. Bale (who btw still idolises Saints) will also get a good reception next year (unless he goes to Inter/Barca) and Le Tiss...don't even go there
