CC Last 16 - Crystal Palace away

Minsk

Recommended Posts

I'd hope for Aldershot at home just to (hopefully) progress. Selfishly I'd like it to be away at one of the following just so I could go: -

Man Utd

Man City

Stoke

Everton

Liverpool

Blackburn

Bolton

Burnley

btw, your location - Wigan?

Newcastle are 4th in the prem.

Totally false position. They have been shocking. Despite the fact their defensive record is the best in the Prem, this is down to luck more than judgement. Arsenal, Sunderland, Villa and QPR have all been guilty of poor finishing against them and they are toothless up front. Decent midfield in Tiote and Cabaye (who is looking like the best signing of the season so far) and Ben Arfa to come back but I think an outfit like us would have a great shout of beating them.

in order of their current league position:

Man Utd

Man Citeh

Chelski

Newcastle

Stoke

Everton

Liverpool

Wolves

Blackburn

Arsenal

Bolton

Saints

Cardiff

C. Palace

Burnley

Aldershot

I know there will be many on here hoping for us to get the Arse away, or either of the Mancs/Scousers at home. However, I always want to see Saints win EVERY match so a home tie against Aldershot would be top of my wish list.

Having said that, it would also be quite interesting for Pards to bring Leon Best and the 'toon down here.

Stoke

Wolves

Burnley

Aldershot

As these are grounds I have somehow not managed to go to!!

I think we can all agree that Newcastle will not end 4th, or in the top half for that matter!!

The 4th round is due to be played in the w/c 24 Oct (between reading (a) and BORO (H) - imo 2 important games)

The draw is Sat at approx 12:10.

We are no 14 in the draw

http://www.football-league.co.uk/carlingcup/news/20110922/carling-cup-round-4-draw-details_2293330_2459095

Cheers. Getting surprisingly excited about this draw which guarantees it's going to be a let down.

I would prefer someone bigger than us but not too big. man u the way they are playing at the mo would see us out of the cup, Arsenal dispite the way they are playing would probably be too big a step too. But Toon or Stoke would on paper look like a winnable game and a good progression to the next round should we get past them. By then the confidence should be higher and a bigger team may be more do-able.

Rather the league is the priority but would also like to keep in the winning habit so the cup should still be taken seriously

Wouldn't want Stoke away. Britannia Stadium is not a happy hunting ground for visiting teams.

Ideal draw for me would be:

Liverpool v Chelsea

Man City v Man Utd

Everton v Arsenal

Southampton v Aldershot

Bolton v Stoke

Cardiff v Wolves

Burnley v Palace

Newcastle v Blackburn

This for me too but put Stoke at home to Arsenal, they never cope well with that. Love to see Arsene Winger having a moan about his players getting tackled and not being aloud to just take the P1ss out of the opposition.

30/1 surely? 15/1 to draw Newcastle (home or away) but 30/1 for away?

I know not everyone can be way more than just good friends with Carol Vorderman (like I am) but c'mon?

There are 16 teams left in total in the competition. 15 other teams not including Saints. Newcastle are one of them. There are 14 others. This makes it 14/1 to draw them (or any other of the teams) (or is 15/1 - I'm saying 14/1 cos 14 chances you don't, 1 chance you do). Whatever - it def ain't 30/1.

Odds to draw them at home? I'll let someone else work that out. Carol has had to pop down the shops for 5 mins.

If you want to be a smart arse about its more complicated than that ;-)

If saints drawn first - chance of that is 1 in 16 x 1 in 15 that club A (the one you want drawn next) = 1 in 240

PLUS

Chance of Club A being drawn first is 1/16 x Saints drawn second 1/15 = 1/240

PLUS

Chance of saints being 3rd in draw is 1/14 x club A being 4th 1/13 = 1 in 182 + vice versa and so on.....

Think thats right all the way down to the last paring reducing the odds to 1 in 2... then add them all up... leave that to someone else ;-) Any probability experts know any different?

Interesting to see the number of you keen to play Arsenal "go to the Emirates" "beatable" "Chamberlain" etc etc

I went to the Arsenal Shrew game with an Arsenal mate (£10 ticket) as well as Saints last night and offer the following thoughts:-

AOC got better and better as the game went on, scored a great goal, nearly another and was their man of the match;

Arsenals second 11 would have beaten our "second 11" easily based on what I saw;

At our best and at full strength we could give Arsenal a game at SMS if we rattled them;

Our vocal support would have a great night at The Emirates, its some venue I am sure the team would do us proud.

COYR, off to Burnley Saturday

Someone on TUI says he has heard from someone at the club it will definitely be Burnley at home. I don't normally post bullsh*t rumours, but this guy correctly predicted Hoiveld signing, Chamberlain to Arsenal, the 8-2 at Old Trafford, 9/11 and the German occupation of Poland so it must be true.

Correct. I think some people are trying to over-elaborate and have not read the question (basic requirement of all examinations). The question posed by JustMike in post #70 was "what's the betting we get Newcastle away!" (at least I think it was a question, the ! is slightly confusing). There are 2 independent events, (1) the chance of Saints drawing Newcastle, which is simply 1 in 15 (or 1/15) and (2) Newcastle being drawn at home, which is 1 in 2 (or 1/2). To find the combined probability of these 2 events they are multiplied together, so 1/15 * 1/2, which is 1/30.

Er... not sure... confused now, BUT are you right? .... if you have 16 teams, what is the total number of possible combination of matches? If it was a 16 team league it would mean 30 weeks of 8 games a week = 240 matches (or combination of matches)

Only 1 of these games will be Saints v Newcastle so 1/240 + 1/240 chance that its Newcastle v Saints giving (1/120)

However, as its a cup you have to select 1 week only ( at random) so the odds that in any week saints will be playing Newcastle - is actually 2/30 as saints must play them twice to complete the season ;-) so that makes it 1 in 15 surely?

LOL ;-)

Blimey ..talk about convoluted reasoning.

1/240 is the chance that saints v newcaslte is drawn first, or in any specified place in the order. (1/120 if you don't care if it is home or away).

I'm with the 1/15 probability (ie odd of 14 to 1 against) of playing Newcastle. Or 1/30 (29 to 1) chance of it being at home.

so basically i was right then? and that Rut who gave it the patronising "you might not be friends with Carol Vorderman but c'mon' can f*ck right off with his maths as he is clearly paying attention to some of her other assets rather than reading the question properly

Yes, I know it was a stupid post - but the thought just pees me off too much.

I hate the way he whined about Fabregas and Barca whilst he was doing the same to us with AOC.

Sooooooo well put.......Lost all respect for the guy - Mr 'I didn't see that' . Want's everything his way. He has joined the list - Poyet, Warnock and Holloway also are in this league of 'dissing' Saints wallies........They are all self obsessed conceited, hypocrites.........

Guilty as charged there but I think the question was 'what are the odds we draw Newcastle' (with no mention of H/A). That ain't 30/1.

Anyway - who really gives a flying one. What ever name comes out of the hat, comes out of the hat...

Talking of Cup draws - I hate this modern day thing of knowing what number your team is. Half the fun of a draw was trying to work out what number you were (cos Stoke were number 28, we must be about 25) as it went along. Always being totally wrong of course, but it is way better waiting for the of your team to be read out - rather than the . All in my opinion of course but surely I can't be the only one who thinks this?
