dannysfc Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 Yeh well I can see why people don't want to come seeing as it's basically some of our fringe players playing like Holmes n Martin n that against one of Prestons teams but whatever game we play I'l be there as I need to go down anyway to pick up my Burnley n Cardiff tickets but yeh there'l probs be around 5-10,000 fans then if that's what the figure that is going round! JRM Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 I reckon the crowd with be around 9-10k with 300 away fans, disappointing but understandable, quite a few other teams for this round offered tickets for £10 adults, that would be better a flat tenner to get in on the night would be more attractive and worked for Arsenal getting decent numbers in. I think it is also a sign of league football being so high and not value for money that people might stretch to £27 for a league game but will then give cup games a swerve as they feel they have already spent a lot on football this month. i can't justify the cost of coming down on the train but if lived in southampton i'd be there. No doubt if we get to the 4th round and draw Man Utd / Man City / Arsenal at home we'll get 30k
Lighthouse Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 Money is tight. People have already had to fork out for 2 home games in the last 10 days, Preston in the cup is probably a step too far for some. Plus this isn't included in the cost of the ST, so they will have to fork out extra too. TUI is complete horse plop at the best of times, but I'd say anywhere between 5-10k is about right for an unglamorous League cup tie.

georgeweahscousin Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 No chance of paying ferry fare and ticket money for a game like this. Don't buy the ticket price cost though. stevegrant Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 According to a Preston-supporting mate of mine, they're bringing about 150 down tonight. Can't say I'm surprised with the low turnout, £14 to watch what is effectively reserve team football is a hell of a lot of money.

Plus all the extra money spent on hot dogs etc.
Matthew Le God Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 Tonights game is... Saints reserves vs League One Preston North End's reserves It is hardly is a big draw to entice the crowds! 5,000 for a reserve game when it cost £14 really isn't that bad. In any case I think it will be higher than that. Lets now look at last nights games (some of which were only £10 per adult)... Burnley vs MK Dons 4,134 Crystal Palace vs Middlesborough 5,448 Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle 10,208 (including circa 2,000 Newcastle fans) Stoke vs Tottenham 15,023 Wolves vs Millwall 7,

Scummer Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 We've been bucking the trend for Carling Cup attendances for a few years now, I guess we've just dropped down to the same sort of level as most other teams. I have to say, as a season ticket holder early round cup games have little appeal to me.

stevegrant Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 We've been bucking the trend for Carling Cup attendances for a few years now We have, but that's generally because we've priced the tickets attractively in the past. £14, for me, to watch what is essentially a glorified reserve game, is too much. I appreciate that the prices have to be agreed between both sides as there's a split in the gate receipts, but it does seem that in the Carling Cup these days, "less is more" applies to the early rounds in particular. The supposed 5000 figure is probably those who would have gone to the game even if it was £20. I'm not going tonight, it's too much effort for this sort of game to have to work through lunch and leave early to get the packed commuter train out of Waterloo, paying £22 for the privilege, and then not getting home until about 1am. Would I have been tempted if it was a tenner? Maybe, even though it's only a difference of £4, strange how rounding the price down to a single note does make a bit of a psychological difference. Dig Dig Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 what about the 46,539 at the Emirates? For none season ticket holders it's very difficult to see Arsenal play and they have a huge waiting list for season tickets anyway. I think any opportunity to watch Arsenal play, with the demand they see, is going to be taken. Being in London also helps as you get more non Arsenal fans willing to go just to see the stadium or to possibly watch Arsenal overturned by Shrewsbury! VectisSaint Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 what about the 46,539 at the Emirates? Their lowest ever attendance at the Emirates for a competitive match. I don't get this "its only the reserves" argument, last round we played 5 regular first teamers including Lallana and had 4 more on the bench 3 of whom played if I recall correctly (Lambert, Hammond & Fonte). Hardly makes it the reserves, in fact was not too far away from what could be a first team if we had a few injuries/suspensions.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 If I lived in Southampton I would go but as I don't I won't. It will be Dave Merrrington telling me how important the first goal will be, then the next after that, until someone gets a 3 goal lead, all the way for me. I think the league cup should be free to all kids from the local schools, at least for one stand. I know their constant noise will make it crap for everyone else (like an under 21 international) but at least it will help reduce the glory hunters. Nothing competes with going to a real game to get kids to support a team. It beats sky sports every time.

The Cat Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 what about the 46,539 at the Emirates? Judging by the type of Arsenal fan I saw last night it was mainly the part timers there. Lots of couples, lots of people holding megastore bags, lots of people taking pictures of each other inside and outside the ground. It was a good chance for those sort of fans to get to a game though as it was no doubt a hell of a lot easier (and cheaper) to get a ticket than it is for league games. Hard to judge but it didn't look like 45000 or whatever it was to me as there were vast swathes of empty seats everywhere except for in the Shrewsbury end which was packed. But then it does have a huge capacity and I couldn't see the top teir above me. As for us, I believe we should easily get 10k+ for a game like this. Fair enough for people that have to add on travel costs, but £14 really isn't that expensive especially if you consider the price of non league football these days. doddisalegend Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 I'd have gone on a tueday night wednesdays are out due to family commitments. At the end of the day there is a limit in time and money that most fans can afford people will pick and choose to thier tastes. This one was never likely to be high on many peoples list, even less so given both teams are likely to put out a second eleven. I'll listen to it on solent. rshephard3 Posted 21 September, 2011 Share Posted 21 September, 2011 My housemate asked me about the pricing situation tonight and on hearing £14 I wasn't shocked or even disappointed. The cinema costs the best part of a tenner these days so IMO £14 for championship v league 1 isn't unreasonable. Would like the option of a season ticket with cup games included though. Back to the original post, yes the attendance will be low but I don't think it's so much for ticket price reasons as some seem to think. The main reason IMO is that the league cup has been devalued by weakening of top tier teams. This has happened over the past decade more than ever before and has occurred at a time when the rich are getting richer and the poor poorer in football very rapidly. The main problem lies in the reward for a win tonight being a trip to a 60% full emirates, for example, to play arsenals kids and still get turned over. This leaves fans feeling like stuffing the whole competition and sticking to paying to see the really competitive games. That said i'll be there. COYR! Mebbe Preston know not many of their fans will make it, so its in their intrests to keep the ticket price high, and play in a quiet mostly empty stadium than a full one full of Saints fans.
