Rut Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 http://www.ohwhenthespurs.co.uk/#/soton-v-thfc/4542136173 Some pics of the Archers here. Anyone got any more pics/stories of that day? Good to see the press in top shock-horror form with their 'perhaps punch someone' comment. (this Spurs site has quite a lot of good old pics/videos from the 70's - this is the only Saints game I could find on there though)
Wurzel Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 Was in the Under West Stand / Archers corner for that game and it really did seem like their fans spent the whole game doing nothing but make holes in the newly erected fence. Plenty of booted legs made it through but thankfully no bodies followed, it would have been a bit lively if they'd managed to breach the defences. Never saw Archers end so packed! (excluding Channon's testimonial ) , must have been a lot without tickets in there. Although to be fair there was nothing going on on the pitch to distract them - no-one will ever convince me that both sides didn't agree to play out a draw that guaranteed we both went up. Love the first b&w photo from a bygone day before political correctness. Group of girls on the pitch with an advert over their heads declaring "Bet she's shopping at Carrefour now"
Shrivvy Saint Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 Yes, remember it well, I too was in the west stand but about a third of the way along from the Archers. I said to my mate that they're going to get through that fence at any moment but thankfully it held out. A nice pitch invasion after. The thing that sticks out for me is the amount of milk the teams were all drinking after in the upper stand celebrations, how times have changed. oldsarum Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 I too was under the West Stand at Archers end. I remember clearly the Spurs fans cutting holes in the newly erected fence before and during the game and expected the worse if we beat them. However at the end all that happened was that Spurs fans pressed up against the gaps in the fence got thumped by Saints fans celebrating on the pitch. I think it would have been a different story though had Spurs not got promoted Also a few days before the this game at Orient a few Spurs fans turned up and made it obvious who they were and got sorted out by some of the 12,000 saints fans in the crowd

Prince Jazzbo Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 I was in the corner of the East Stand right next to the Archers, there was a load of Spurs fans in there, which made things very spicey throughout the game.
corsacar saint Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 One,if not the most boring 0-0,that I have ever seen, but I suppose that is what to have expected with both teams needing a point each to stop Brighton going up. I think had we won we would have pipped Bolton for the title on goal difference.
Lets B Avenue Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 Tony Funnell hit the post in the 1st half and Bally slapped him. Always assumed that was because of the 0-0 fix.

saintquin Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 Remember this game very well. 29th April, my 15th birthday. Was walking down Archers Road when a group of Spurs fans surrounded me and tried to get my ticket of me. They didn't get it but I got stabbes in the shoulder with a knitting needle. A steward took me around the edge of the pitch to the first aid room with a few of my mates cheering me on the way round. Got out just as the team were coming down the stairs onto the pitch. Pants game!
Fan The Flames Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 With the chance of becoming champions would we really fix the game. Was it regarded as a fix at the time or has the myth developed over the years by our sad south coast cousins.
chocco boxo Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 Their manager Keith Burkenshaw (sp) and Lawrie came out onto the pitch beforehand and both got presented with flowers!!!! Thought Funnell blasted over from close range? not hit the post? Anyway we went up!
Junction8a Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 Was also there. No fix but there was a real fear the Spurs fans would invade the pitch to get the match abandoned if we scored. The managers came out to together to try and calm it down as the Spurs fans were breaking down the fences and using the poles as spears. I thought Funnel hit the bar; as he came from Eastbourne I doubt he missed on purpose. Would have been good to win and go up as Champions and put one over Spurs at the same time.
