Sex education for young children

Do you think that this quoted article goes too far for 12 year old upwards?

Family Planning's health promotion director, Frances Bird, said New Zealand had one of the highest teenage pregnancy

rates and children as young as 12 were sexually active.

There are some classic quotes in the article that I thought I had better not copy and paste in case some

feel offended, or at least say they are.

I just wish our education had been as good when I was young, we were only told about flowers

I loved the quote in there from the Secondary Association's President, Patrick Walsh..."the message from those teaching the classes was "they have to go in hard,"

Do these people ever think before opening their mouths?

Since when did you know right from wrong?

Were you two married at some stage?

Now that was a real LOL moment. I even had my daughter ask me what was so funny, but decided that as she is still a bit young to have it explained to her given that she is only 7.

Interesting to see what this site lists as the age of sexual consent around the world - particularly that it is states it is 13 in Spain, 14 in Italy, and 12 in the Vatican City !

One therefore presumes it is also legal to get married at 12 in the Vatican City? Or are they being completely hypocritical, just for a change?

Me and my wife have started talking to our 9 year old about this sort of thing. Ok it is more about periods and hair growning in strange places...well not strange but places that are strange to her.

We have touched on the sex subject, and it has mainly come up due to my wife being pregnant with our 3rd child. The questions do start coming.

I am quite comfortable talking about any of it, really does not bother me, and I think it is very important, and will give her more confidence while growing up and through this stage of her life. My parents were the same with me, and I think it worked well, and my wife's parents never told her anything....so I took very good advantage of this fact!!! lol.

I don't have children myself but if i did i would want them to be equipped to cope with life from an early age, if you teach kids the very basics from the moment they enter the primary school system and then add to it year on year i think you'll be more likely to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies. A little knowledge goes along way with children.

Took our 10 year old grand daughter to brighton last week. She casually asked mrs h about periods and I started telling her about ladies producing an egg once a month etc etc. mrs h gave me an almighty elbow in he ribs ans asked what the hell I thought I was doing. Clearly we have differing views on dealing with an inquisitive mind. Not my job maybe, but never lie to kids I say.
