Stop being lazy....I have said it often enough and stand by it. BTW the thread is about the next seven games not where we will finish at the end of the season. Now do keep up, there's a good chap !

guess you were wrong again, end of September we are about 16 places and about 12 points ahead of your prediction!

He is right so far!

Ummm, he is, but the next bit involves taking 2 points from 4 games, and I still think the "happy with" is comical. My problem with the whole "we don't want to much success to soon, consolidate this season" argument is that I think this team is on the boil and it will loose momentum, and lallana, if it fails to fulfil its potential this season.

Of course I want the team to be successful. When I dream, I dream of Saints at the top of the Premier League and stprming Europe. However, when i look at things in a hard nosed fashion I see that consolidating our place n the NPC as something to be happy with.

Fair play on getting the first three right!

We will see how the next ones go.

I do think we have a lot of quality. For example after 15 minutes today it looked like Watford were the first team to turn up at SMS that had sussed us out, but by late in the second half they looked totally bewildered and the plan had long since gone out of the window.

After Derby got tonked today and have two weeks to stew on it, I for one wouldn't like to guess how that will go.

Quite right - I railed against this pointless argument pre-season and I'm still banging on about it now. Utterly absurd that you plan for promotion next season, or the one after that.

The best season to get promoted is the season you're in. Now.

In the championship especially this idea that you build and build and build is a myth. Championship teams are incredibly transient - if a team don't get promoted that season the squad very often breaks up, or the manager leaves, or the money dries up or the momentum goes. It's a myth that promotion teams are slowly built - they are thrown together and launched into the Premier League.

Have a look at Millwall, who finished nicely ninth last season, all ready with a jolly lovely platform to build on. Oh. As good as bottom of the league.

Look at Coventry - they've had about fifteen consecutive seasons of "building" for a promotion push and they've got nowhere near.

Thankfully Cortese has got this one spot on - we're going for promotion this season, hopefully as champions.

Let's get on with it.

some what tougher. playing 4 out of the currant top 6 teams

but think we will get at least 10 points from these. which would give us a total of 28 points from the first 14 games, still very impressive & keep us in the top 6

Burnley v Southampton,

Cardiff v Southampton,

Southampton v Watford,

Derby v Southampton

Southampton v West Ham

Reading v Southampton

Southampton v Middlesbrough

as these are the remaining games from the original thread, it seems that we have a good chance of winning more / all ..if we can overcome the problem of teams coming up against us from the start with " spoiler tactics ".

The real success will be exactly what alternative formation NA uses to break down the opposition in the second halves

of such games where we aren't in control. Any 95-minute game plans seems out of the question these days...?

I agree with your argument, my judgement is based in the evidence of the intent. NC will of course talk about going for promotion this season but does the evidence of his intent support this. Surely if we were really going for it we would have got that striker that might in then end mean the difference, even if it did mean paying slightly over the odds. After all, we did well on getting the OXO money.

IMO the team has started for better than NC could ever have dared imagine, in this sense he is lucky. Having said that if that luck continues and we do get promoted i will be absolutely delighted. however, there is a long way to go.

Next four games will be a big test I stand by my predictions but think I f i get one wrong it will be Reading in that we might sneak a draw against.

Still, if we pick up a couple of points we should still be in the top six...just , which is pretty good !

Let's get on with it... using the team we built for promotion last season, and added a couple of improvements to.

Dunno where you got the idea Coventry have been building from, SISU have done a lot, but giving that impression isn't one of them.

It's equally as false to claim that some teams aren't gradually built as it is to claim that they're just thrown together and successful. Very few teams which aren't divisional "all-stars" get chucked together and are immediately successful, and the understanding of others' games isn't often there where there are wholesale changes.

Norwich last season added 5 or 6 over two transfer windows to the nucleus of a winning team. Swansea added a couple of Prem and Italian loanees to their consistent squad of the previous season to put themselves over the top, Reading lost in the playoffs with a core of players from the season before. Leeds challenged with the previous season's core from League One but fell away and are having to rebuild - with their season start an indication of the perils of just chucking a team together - both Leicester and Leeds started slowly with new players and are now starting to put results together.

I think to be honest you can get success either way, but it's more likely if you're building on successes not making wholesale changes, so there's something to be said for the advantage of "building", as long as you're "improving" not just "changing".

Cardiff v Southampton - loss

Southampton v Watford - win

Derby v Southampton - draw

Southampton v West Ham - win

Reading v Southampton - draw

Think those are realistic predictions.

Only one result out at the mo. Although I reckon we might end up beating Reading...

usually i am uber positive at the mo..but have the feeling we will lose on tuesday..

they are on fire at the mo, we have a few injuries....and we surely can't keep winning at home...???

I reckon it'll be a score draw. I think we'll be surprised at how close both teams are when we play on Tuesday.

No, looked again, predicted a draw with the hammers, that would be a good result !

Not wishing to be smug but your prediction for the seven games is starting to look well off course tonight.

Saints look good for a top six finish now because;

1. the form we have is based on good habits, work ethics and sound overall ability

2. win, lose or draw we continue to make other sides look ordinary

3. we don't seem to bottle games when they are important

4. we don't depend on one player

I am sure you are as chuffed as everyone else. Do you want to revise your prediction for the season now?

  • 2 weeks later...

So we ended up with 12 points from a run of 7 pretty tough games. Incredible form really. I'd have settled for anything over 7. West Ham & Boro at home, and Derby, Cardiff, Burnley & Reading away.

The next 7 look a lot easier on paper, time to get the bugs out of that away form before THAT game.

The next seven look relatively easier and in my view all winnable. After this lot is pompey!

Southampton v Peterborough

Coventry v Southampton

Southampton v Brighton

Bristol City v Southampton

Southampton v Hull

Doncaster v Southampton

Southampton v Blackpool

To quote a cliche there are no easy games. Every team wants to beat us and some will but we are the form team and after 15 games proving that we are no flash in the pan . Its quite obvious that the players want promotion as badly as we do. We can do it.........I believe

our next 3 away games are against the bottom 3 teams , Coventry, Bristol City and Doncaster. And we all know what we are like at home.

Wonder how much a tenner on Saints to win at St Mary's rolled to next game would be up to now? £1280 if evens although i know that is too generous
