A fan in the board? Who was the front runner???

It was a toss-up between Illingsworth, Keith and A.N.Other.

Seriously, what a bad idea a fan on the board would be. Clarity with and consultation with the fanbase is one thing, but elevating ONE fan above the others to sit on the board? Nuts, utterly nuts.

Shame that there wasn't much canvassing of opinions while Ian Brennan was chipping away at that £112,000 monstrosity.... I still can't believe no-one said "Hang on a minute, mate..."

There was; the organiser dude saw the finished thing a few days before the unveiling and gave it a massive thumbs up

Fan on the board would have been a ridiculous notion and would have served only to satisfy the ego of one of the usual publicity-hungry suspects; thankfully it came to nothing.

Wasn't the excuse that it what constructed from different parts so that it was hard to determine scale/quality etc?

And yes, good point... thanks God it came to nothing :o

I think so! The immortal quote:

"Ian has done a tremendous job. It's very rare I'm lost for words but I saw the statue last week and it's awesome - a tremendous tribute to a great man. Fans have waited a long time for this and it's fantastic."

Reminds of people who are "too nice" to say anything critical to anyone and because of that, get themselves into worse situations :o

That comment though... they cannot seriously have believed what they were saying

i fookin love that statue, never does it fail to make me chuckle to myself

only saints could've come up with that, briliant

The way we banish myths and break records now is a great example of old saints. The white witch, Delgado, Statue and Saints go wilde is an example of how Southampton FC one did business!

I think a few minutes need to be taken in front of this picture just to fully realise how utterly f**king wrong that thing was!!!! The raised arm, the unnatural wrist joint, the impish legs and Milan Mandaric's face.

Wow, it just gets more amazing with age.

The FOTB thing gets slagged of a lot on here but at the time a lot of people thought that the club was running out of control and contrary to the desire's of the fans. It would always have been impossible for a Saints Trust to buy the club, so some people thought a FOTB was a compromise and one way of trying to influence the running of the club for the good of the fans. It was dark times and people were thinking of anything to make things better, so should they be knocked for trying to find solutions to the problems of the time. Anyhow its all in the past and we can look forward to much better times.

The problem with that is that there are still some (I don't need to name names) who STILL believe that a fan on the board is needed.

I'm all for the club engaging with the supporter base more often; I don't think it happens enough at the moment and the removal of the fans forum is a backwards step in that department IMO. But the whole notion of extending that to a supporter on the board is unrealistic, unnecessary and just a recipe for disaster; in my view at least. It was a bad idea back then, it's still a bad idea now.

Never, ever fails. I can remember being on the forum on just after the launch dinner when people started uploading the early pics of it. A couple of posts of vague approval before someone piped up "hang on, isn't that sh it?". A little bit of defensive "it must be the light/angle of the camera/how dare you" stuff from some before the floodgates opened and the torrent of top quality gags began. The word LOL gets used a lot but that thread had me almost crying with absolute genuine laughter. I'm laughing now just thinking about it.

But the serious point is about fans on the board. That bloke was chosen and given £££ commission to make that monstrosity despite being a woodcarver specialising in animals with zero experience of large scale public art commissions or creating sculptures from bronze or creating sculptures of human beings.

His one and only qualification "he was a passionate Saints fan". To the badly haircutted idiots on that Statue Board that was the only qualification they looked for, being a passionate Saints fan trumping any sensible qualification for the job. And as they all patted each other on the back in the social club where they made that decision, keeping it in the Saints fans family, because Saints fans know best, they brilliantly pi ssed away £110k odd of genuine Saints fans money, and then another £100k of Leon Crouch's money when he had to stump up for the proper one months later. Which turned out to be a hell of a lot better despite not being created by a passionate Saints fan. Funny that.

Keep the fans off the board, forever. Flask drinking, well meaning idiots.

That is truly legendary status.

Remember driving by it the night it was unveiled and thinking WTF!!!!!!!!!!

In a car crash sort of way I suppose I would like to have been there when it was unveiled. Still, at least we ended up with something to be proud of (and a story that will always get a chuckle out of me).

If someone could only ressurrect THAT thread about the statue unveiling. Comedy history.

Cracking post CB Fry

I actually think a little bit of wee came out when I was reading that thread. That was followed by a 30 min phonecall to Exit2 where we managed to get in about three words each in between the fits of laughter. Some dark humour that night.

Having a fan on the board is something we have done since 1898, because I think you will find that up until the time ML bought the club most board members had started off as fans and then been invited onto the board. Admittedly it wasn't just because they were fans that they were invited on - it had more to do with money or expertese, but they were all passionate fans from John Corbett right through to good old Keith Wiseman and Guy Askham.

Without doubt, the most hilarious thread ever on a Saints forum

When someone had his arm coming over the stadium roof and holding one of the floodlights up, I actually started to fell lightheaded where I was laughing so hard

Top post!!

Don't confuse a 'club' supporter' with qualified decision maker whatever the subject.

Such great fans just before the reverse takeover that they could screw over the club for personal financial gain, inviting their business cronies onto the board to strengthen their power base. And regarding a post further down about Lowe saying that we could have a fan on the board if we had 10% of the shares, that of course would have meant that that shareholding would be greater than those held by most individual board members and nearly twice what Lowe had as chairman. That would entail that fans' shareholding being sufficient under certain circumstances to hold the balance of power on the board and not therefore something that the board would have encouraged.
