70's Mike Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 We've beaten Birmingham but they are only 14th in the table and we are top, so was it no more than to be expected? We have only played one team from the top 10 which was the defeat at Leicester. The clubs we have beaten are Leeds (11th); Birmingham (14th); Millwall (15th); Barnsley (16th); Ipswich (19th); and Notts Forest (22nd). Should we be worried? and i have enjoyed beating them all

colehillsaint Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 Great game. The back four shape and orgasnisation was miles better this week. David Connolly had a terrific game, and from the Chapel, I thought Jos Hooiveld looked much more confident in the air, and on the ball. Going forward we didn't actually look at our best, and still scored 4!

derry Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 (edited) Very good performance, Birmingham pressed us until the penalty, good ball in by Fox, attacked by movement from the edge of the box leaving the goal area clear, Lambert on the far post pushed over, clear penalty. Two class goals good passing Richardson free on the right, to the byeline, cut backs to Guly and Lallana at the penalty spot. ball driven in. Well on top. Just after halftime, silly free kick, badly defended. low through the wall gave Birmingham momentum. Several more silly free kicks given away caused us problems. Lallana failed to track Carr who drove through and hit the far post, Lallana then made sure he shut him down after that, Richardson blocked on the line and Davis made some good shotstopping saves. Quality goal from Chaplow after good passing, Connolly ruled offside, Adkins said it wasn't, well on top, Chaplow, Schneiderlin and De Ridder came on and fitted in well. Fonte teamed up well with Hooiveld and had his best game to date. Fox needs to check more behind him as he sometimes reacted when he needn't have put the ball out of play. Excellent team performance Edited 18 September, 2011 by derry

SNSUN Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 A massive w00t of the very highest order - a fantastic win. I may have no points on the prediction league but I couldn't care less. Great win against a very fancied Birmingham. I just can't see this good feeling subsiding. Yes, we'll have a bad spell or two, but we're really setting ourselves up well for the rest of the season. Only 3 shots on target too according to the Beebs stats, and we go and score 4 goals. That shows the clinical finishing nature of the team at the moment. Nigel Adkins is a genius. Thank you Mr Liebherr for making us all feel happy again.
beatlesaint Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 I really didnt believe we would win today, I thought it looked a draw written all over it, but first half we were superb at times. Wasn't too keen on Richardson last season but he has been very solid this season, Hooiveld looked ok to me, I know some dont agree. Fox does worry me with his marking, I am still preferring Harding at the moment but its early days, only his second full game. For me Connolly was man of the match. I cannot think of a cleverer forward wearing the Saints shirt in many many years. He was outstanding today and some of the link up play with Lallana is out of this world. Guly had a quiet game apart from the superb finish and Chaplow certainly made a difference when he came on. Closes people down well and makes lots of little darting runs. Top of the League eh ? Fkin delighted :-)
saints-cris Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 Another great win, very emphatic, will keep the confidence levels ridiculously high. Chez Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 (edited) Another very good display especially in the first half, but also in the second half when Brum threatened to get into the game we stepped it up and retook control again. Our passing style allows us to slow the game down and take the sting out of teams and the days of 3-0 up, lose 4-3, seem so far away its not true. The goals were a delight, but so too was our all round display. I love the tippy tappy stuff up front, I also love our desire to pass it out from the back. I know everyone ****s themselves, but we have much much better ball players these days so try not to worry so much. Cork getting the ball with a guy up his backside is not the same as Wotton with ten yards of space. Swansea got out of this league doing exactly the same and they got caught out a few times. You have to take the rough with the smooth and in the end all that extra possession helps us win games. Davis 7 some good saves and sound distribution Richardson 8 overlapped well and gave Beausejour almost nothing. Fonte 7 kept King under wraps, won a lot in the air and solid display. Went missing once in the first half, but much more controlled display. Hooiveld 8 very composed display and strong in the air. Fox 5 beaten for pace a few times which worries me. Set pieces were poor. Lallana 8 some wonderful skills as usual. Shame he didn't cap one dribble with a goal. If there is one criticism it was that he left fox exposed a couple of times. Cork 9 very strong, great first touch and dominated the middle. Love how he wants it no mater what and when he gets it he never loses it. Hammond 9 equally dominant, ran the game. Only two poor short /headers/passes all game. Seemed to be everywhere in the first half. Guly 7 great first half, dissappeared a bit in the second. Took his goal well and worked up and down. Connelly 8 great busy display, did he ever give it away? Great link up play with Lambert. Lambert 9 all round game top notch again. Ran the show. Chaplow 8 busy energetic and dangerous Edited 18 September, 2011 by Chez
S-Clarke Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 (edited) We were excellent today, and it was well deserved. I honestly didn't think we'd be comfortably beating the likes of Birmingham and Leeds 6 months ago, but we are. Credit to the players who have stepped up a level with ease. Jack Cork has added so much to this team though, his presence in the middle lifts everyone else. He's a class act, and you could see today how much we missed him in the middle against Forest. Lallana was Lallana, not much more needs to be said. He's our Adel Tarabat - but with a better attribute, he doesn't go missing in games or ignore his defensive responsibilities. He's always there tracking back when needed. So pleased so see Richardson back, who I think has been absolutely superb this season. Very lively coming down the right flank, and has improved his delivery and distribution from last season. He got 2 excellent assists today. I think the start we've made has demonstrated why we didn't need to go on the spending spree that everyone assumed we would do, that would have just ruined the team spirit and togetherness we have - just 1 or 2 ''better'' additions every transfer window is fine, and we'll just keep evolving every window which is how it should be. Steady progress, not rushed. It's a great period to be a Saints fan at the moment, let's just enjoy every moment. Some marks: Davis - 8 - Thought he made a couple of excellent saves, he's always there to react when needed. Richardson - 8 - Excellent to have him back, gone up a level this year. Fonte - 8 - Best game this season IMO, dominant in the air and classy on the ground. Very rarely beaten. Jos - 7 - Better than last week, won most in the air and is tidy on the ground. Maybe isn't as ''dominant'' and strong as you'd expect him to be at times. Fox 7 - Again, better than last week. Can get caught as he switches off, and players run in behind - but that happened less today than it did against Forest, and under our coaching he'll improve this side of the game. Attacking wise he's quality though, a level up on Harding. Guly 8 - Great to see him make the step up, I think he's been pretty good in most games he's played this year and is making that right midfield positions his own. Great goal and technique to hit that on the volley. Hammond 8 - Captain's performance again. Keeps the ball brilliantly and is always available for a pass. Cork 9 - Our best midfielder, maybe turning into the best midfielder at this level. He controls the game and allows us to play at our tempo, he could easily be playing in the premiership. Lallana 8 - Classy as usual, nice goal and movement to get the oppertunity. Always running and scaring the **** out of Carr, which was funny to see (he didn't know which way he was going half the time) Lambo 7 - Good penalty, never in doubt. Held the ball up well and won the ball well in the air. Looks at home in this league. Conners 8 - Very lively game, looked back to his best game. Unlucky not to score, pretty sure that goal wasn't offside. Chappers and De-Ridder were excellent when they came on, both gave us an extra bit of energy and Chaplows run for the goal was brilliant. He's starting to show the form from his Burnley days again. Edited 18 September, 2011 by S-Clarke

Give it to Ron Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 If you cannot enjoy the first 45 minutes today and applaud at the quality of goals you should stop watching Saints it doesn't get much better in this division. We simply were magnificent coming forward. Ok the defence is still a bit jittery but they will get it right I am sure. Fox and Joos were good today and Frazier delivered 2 quality crosses. Cork and Hammond were immense with their workrate. I would still like to see another forward who can hold it up more and has a bit of pace to turn them around but its hard to pick who to drop. We have some quality on the bench...wish we could have 7 subs. De Ridder and Chaplow to start on Wednesday and Forte up front needs a run out just in case we get an injury. Also a mention for Guly who ran his nuts off today.

um pahars Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 At times a truly superb performance. So clinical up front in the first half that Brum just couldn't cope with us. Another quiert start to the second half, but fully composed and in control at the end. I predicted a very tough game against a team who I think are half decent, but at times we were streets ahead of them. Confidence is sky high and the way we passed the ball around at times and the quality of finishing was exceptional. Going forward we look unstoppable, still have a few doubts about our defensive frailties (some of which might be as a result of our brilliance going forward). Davis - 8 - Very good game with a couple of decent saves (although again played the short ball out once too often). Richardson - 8 - Sensational going forward and solid at the back (set up two goals as well) Fonte - 8 - A rock that never seemed troubled. Hooiveld - 6 - A lump at times and did a job on their centre forward, but a little unsure at other times. Fox - 6 - Still need to be won round by this fella. Nothing that bad, but nothing that good. Lallana - 9.5 - Truly sensational and just too good for this league. Cork - 9 - Ran the game, all round quality. Hammond - 8 - The legs of the team who anchored it all Guly - 8 - Silky at times, great finish and full of running Connoly - 9 - So intelligent on and off the ball. Lambert - 9 - Hold up play and linking up woth others was great. Subs: Chaplow - 8 - Get a few goals up and then bring Chaplow on seems to be the plan. Only on for 20 minutes but made a massive impact Schneiderlin - 5 - Only 10 mins, but never did much De Ridder - 6 - Only 10 mins, but provided an outlet and made sure Carr's nightmare continued even with Lallana going off Adkins needs to take some massive credit for producing a team who are so full of confidence and playing so attractively. Have some concerns about the "squad" so hopefully we can keep injury free (particularly the key players) for a while yet. Slightly disappointed about the crowd as well. For me it's not just the results that have been impressive, but also the manner in which they have been achieved.

EastleighSoulBoy Posted 18 September, 2011 Share Posted 18 September, 2011 Lot's of more important things (non footy) currently on my mind but this afternoon eased my worries for a while. Very happy with Frazer's performance and the substitutions were timed well. Strength in depth is what we wanted and we almost have perfection in that quarter. Jos is settling and super KD was magnificent. Love this playing out from the back but it's not always possible. Last player mention for David Connolly, works hard, never seems to tire and is a great asset to the squad. I'm beginning to think that an auto spot is very attainable but wouldn't it be great to go up as Champions?

When we were in for Cork initially, we had all the youtube clips and although he looked an asset, it could hardly prepare any Saints fan for the extent he has influenced this team. Those clips will never make Cork look the Hollywood player of the side, but his overall effect is massive, allowing all the other Hollywoods to strut their stuff. Similarly Hammond.
