pap Posted 16 September, 2011 Posted 16 September, 2011 Just got a text from a mate about Cantell. Apparently, they have scrapped their old house names and replaced them with the names of the stands at St. Marys. Can anyone confirm this? Pretty cool if so.
hamster Posted 16 September, 2011 Posted 16 September, 2011 All the dimwits will be in Northam House I take yt?
ThreeSixty Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 All the dimwits will be in Northam House I take yt? Its Cantell, they're all dimwits.
alpine_saint Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I went to Glen Eyre, find it sad the way that school has gone downhil. House names will always be Austen,Watts, Nightingale and Mitchell to me.
Mbizzle Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I was at Cantell late 90s - early 00s and I think the 4 houses were: Arundel, Polymond, Nicholl and Woolbridge??
Chicken With A Banjo Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I was once house captain of Polymond. Pretty pathetic if true, the world is much bigger than football, and Cantell should be broadening kids horizons.
pap Posted 17 September, 2011 Author Posted 17 September, 2011 I was a house captain at Cantell too, but when my aunties and uncles went to school in that building when it was called Glen Eyre, so I'd say that their ( and Alps ) claim is a bit better. I'm officially a "Tower Era" Cantell kid now
pap Posted 17 September, 2011 Author Posted 17 September, 2011 I was Polymond, and you'll be pleased to hear that Arundel were a good bunch in my year.
ericb Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 Another ex Cantell lad here to be fair it had a bit of a "reputation" when i was there in the early mid 90's but it was a ****ing great laugh and i'm still good mates with most of the people i knew from there. As for the names i think it's a good thing, links saints to the community again which is never a bad thing.
alpine_saint Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I was at Cantell late 90s - early 00s and I think the 4 houses were: Arundel, Polymond, Nicholl and Woolbridge?? Who or what the f**k are they then ? Why are the authorities determined to mong-down the British education system ? Austen, Watts, Nightingale and Mitchell represented the names of some of the city's most important sons and daughters.

Maybe you should've paid more attention in class mate as they're all local historical landmarks
Ewell Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I went to Glen Eyre, find it sad the way that school has gone downhil. Explains a lot. St Georges smashes Glen Eyre.
alpine_saint Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 Explains a lot. St Georges smashes Glen Eyre. Be serious.
alpine_saint Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 Maybe you should've paid more attention in class mate as they're all local historical landmarks Ooo. Shoot me for not knowing the name of a section of the old town wall...
DT Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I went to Glen Eyre, find it sad the way that school has gone downhil. House names will always be Austen,Watts, Nightingale and Mitchell to me. Me too. And Nightingale ruled. Ahem.
benjii Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I had no idea state schools used a house system.
53andout Posted 17 September, 2011 Posted 17 September, 2011 I went to Glen Eyre, find it sad the way that school has gone downhil. House names will always be Austen,Watts, Nightingale and Mitchell to me. Agree I left in 83 Why would you want to name them after the local football club stands
LA77 Posted 18 September, 2011 Posted 18 September, 2011 Nicholl would be the Northam stand. Arundel would be the Itchen Stand, and Woolbridge would be the Chapel. Polymond would be the Kingsland stand.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 18 September, 2011 Posted 18 September, 2011 If its houses aren't named after types of strawberries, the school isn't worth attending IMO.
Marsdinho Posted 18 September, 2011 Posted 18 September, 2011 If its houses aren't named after types of strawberries' date=' the school isn't worth attending IMO.[/quote'] Bedford !!!
ThreeSixty Posted 18 September, 2011 Posted 18 September, 2011 If its houses aren't named after types of strawberries' date=' the school isn't worth attending IMO.[/quote'] More partial to naval battleships myself.
pap Posted 18 September, 2011 Author Posted 18 September, 2011 I think one positive is the strong association with the club. Being part of a house all gave us a sense of identity, and it's clear from this thread that some of us still retain a bit of allegiance to our old houses. Perhaps it'll make the Cantell kids more likely to be Saints fans. We'll need them in that 90K stadium when we're tearing teams a new one in the CL
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 18 September, 2011 Posted 18 September, 2011 Bedford !!! Pffft, Sovereign all the way.
Dr Who? Posted 18 September, 2011 Posted 18 September, 2011 Who or what the f**k are they then ? Why are the authorities determined to mong-down the British education system ? Austen, Watts, Nightingale and Mitchell represented the names of some of the city's most important sons and daughters. Polymond, Arundel, Nicholl and Woolbridge are all landmarks around Southampton. I know Polymond is a tower of the Bargate, Arundel was a tower as well as there used to be a building where the West Quay is now called Arundel Towers (office block) but I am sure it was named after an area nearby. They others you will have to look up. So just as important as peoples names I would say. I was at Cantell and in Polymond to 91 leaver!!
hamster Posted 19 September, 2011 Posted 19 September, 2011 You lot went to pussy schools. We just had four GANGS .

Dr Who? Posted 19 September, 2011 Posted 19 September, 2011 I reckon you just proved my point. Good point, but I would have to look up the names of the houses when it was Glen Eyre, as I really do not know any of them.
alpine_saint Posted 19 September, 2011 Posted 19 September, 2011 Good point, but I would have to look up the names of the houses when it was Glen Eyre, as I really do not know any of them. You havent heard of Jane Austen, Florence Nightingale, RJ Mitchell or Sir Isaac Watts ???

Everyone would know where they came from.
mynameisthehulk Posted 20 September, 2011 Posted 20 September, 2011 I thought they were all named after the gates to the wall, or something like that. In other news Polymond won inter house cricket 3 years in a row 1989, 1990 and 1991, **** you Arundel, **** you.
charlie saint Posted 20 September, 2011 Posted 20 September, 2011 You havent heard of Jane Austen, Florence Nightingale, RJ Mitchell or Sir Isaac Watts ??? I must say, I'd never heard of Isaac Watts - not being from Southampton I'd assumed you meant either James Watt, or Isaac Newton... but now I know better. The trouble with naming school houses after people is that you are a hostage to their reputation. Wher I went to school Oliver Cromwell was a famous historical personage (there was also a Pepys House), so I was in Cromwell House. Later on I discovered that to some people I might as well have been in Hitler House. Nevermind... The idea of naming them after the stands in a football stadium is just asinine.

charlie saint Posted 20 September, 2011 Posted 20 September, 2011 Lets not forget that the stands themselves are named after areas of Southampton surrounding the stadium. True, I suppose... But the whole idea of having named houses (I'd have thought) was to have tradition and continuity, so that members feel as if they belong to something special. I bet they don't go changing the names of the houses at Eton every five minutes.
ericb Posted 20 September, 2011 Posted 20 September, 2011 Did you just compare Cantell to Eton? **** me that's funniest thing i've read on here for a while, what a load of pompous bull****
