Typical speculative press report not based on fact and complete disregard to whether it unsettles the player. Clubs have not found a way of preventing these stories but they are not in the interests of anyone other that the paper or the media station that hopes to increase customers by publishing unfounded stories regardless of truth. As for Rickie, he has every chance of playing in the Prem for Saints and if SFC is promoted his wages will go up accordingly so don't expect him to take any notice anyway.

We are supposed to believe that NC has agreed to a 5m fee now, so soon after the start of the season and 4 MONTHS ahead of the window opening, after the way he litterally tortured every penny out of Arsenal ?

If this DOES turn out to be true, it represents a change of direction for NC, the ditching of the 5-year plan and possibly an asset stripping exercise to recover Liebherr family investment money, in which case we will have a LOT more to worry about than one player being sold.

I simply do not believe it.

Nearer home.but thought he was pretty settled and happy,as long as kids and wife are liking it down here, also think AP may have bitten off more than he can chew and may not be there for the long term.

Nearer home maybe, but hardly near. It's at least a 3 hour drive from Newcastle to Liverpool, more in bad weather ... only about 50-60 miles closer than Southampton. However, whilst I'm sure he is settled here, if any premier league team bid for him he'd have to be tempted. At 30 he won't get many chances, apart via from us being promoted of course.

What is far less likely than him being tempted though IMO, is Newcastle actually bidding £5 million for a 30 year who has never played in the top flight. Surely this is just the standard "link any decent Saints player with Pardew" lazy journalism? They were supposedly going to buy several of our players last window too weren't they?

So we got 12m for Chamberlain and couldnt tempt anyone here...so some of you want 5m and let our main goal scorer go.

Baffled.....for those who think he is not good enough...get a re-run of Qpr v Newcastle and watch Jay Bothroyd and Best's performance!

Absolutely without doubt THE most intelligent post in here for ages. (Agree with the QPR strinker comment totally)

FFS we couldn't sign a striker in the summer even for 6 million why on EARTH would we let one go who is scoring goals AND is an integral part of the team.

Promotion is worth 60 million. Rickie may not be Rooney/Pele but he is a critical cog in our TEAM at the moment. 5 mil in the bank or the chance of 60 mil at the end of the season? Jeez

Too many on here spend too long playing FM

Spot on!!

What use is the money? We have money and struggle to spend due to inflated prices etc.

If you think we don't have money after the promotion and chamberlain deal, then what difference will 5m make anyway?

All we'd be doing is losing another top player and hurting the team. Can't see any way it'd make sense for us.

True TV money should have jumped to around £3m per season. Was this not the new deal that the Championship clubs signed up to with the lower leagues getting a bum deal and at the time NC wasnt happy about?

Unlikely I'll give you but NEVER? There's no way anybody could be confident in that.

Being Saint's supporters, we can't see this, but most Championship players would jump at the chance of being Newcastle's centre forward. That's not to say I think it's going to happen, they'll get better value abroad as Englsih players come with a premium. But, if Newcastle did want him, I'd be surprised if he wasn't interested.

There was quite an interesting chat between Alan Brazil and some journo on talksport this morning. Brazil said RL could make it in the Premiership, and the journo was on about how good Lallana was.

Lambo's goals alone this season will be worth a darn sight more than 5 mill if we get promoted and i can't see us achieving that without him. Even if he aint prem material he would still be a very good back up. I think NC is a shrewd enough businessman to know that.

Such rumours and links are the price of our success. As long as we are doing well and our "star" players are performing then they are always going to be linked with moves to "bigger" clubs.

He could probably treble (or more) his money and would be playing on the big stage with his former manager, so maybe.

On the other side of the coin he appears settled, is a big fish in a little pond, we would be mad (at least I think we would be) to sell him in that £5m would get us nothing & cost us much more and we think Cortese is not one to bossed around.

If Newcastle really do want him then ultimately it would come down to how much he fancied the move (and I'm not sure any of us would know either way) and how tough Cortese was prepared to be!!!

IMHO, on balance, I'd say it's a no go.

If Newcastle were to bid £5m for Lambert, I'd think we'd have to seriously consider it. However, I'll stick my neck out and say there's absolutely no way they'll be paying £5m for anyone, least of all a nearly-30-year-old striker who's only ever played 6 games in the Championship.

seriously consider it. WTF!

I've been off to TalkDrivel's web site http://www.talksport.co.uk/ and guess what - not a mention of it.

And their "Transfers Rumours" page http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/transfer-rumours has guess what - not a mention of it.

They do says the barcodes target a Freilburg striker (Cisse) is "still for sale".

I've even typed "lambert" into their search box and guess what - not a mention of it.

ROFL at all the FM gamers wanting to take the money. You can't just go out and buy a ready made replacement, it simply is not that easy.

Yes, the projected transfer fee is huge for a 30 year old playing his first season in the Championship but you have to look beyond that. If he leaves, who replaces him? Will it affect the dynamics of the squad? (The answer to that is yes, yes it will). Will his replacement slot in seamlessly, or will he struggle to find form? Will we have to adapt ourselves to the replacement? Will he even be replaced? If he is, do we even have a suitable target? If he isn't, do we have a backup plan? Will that stand a good chance of working? How does this affect our promo push? The list of questions (problems, more like) it creates is almost endless. As Lambert said himself, you cannot buy what we've got - the continuation and familiarity between a group of players that have been together almost 3 years.

It's way too bigger gamble to make assuming we're in playoff contention in December. Lambert staying is far more important than £5m we might never spend.

Wouldn't blame him for wanting to go. All players would regret not signing for a Prem team. We might get there, but despite the good start, it is a hard league to win. If he didn't go then he would regret it for the rest of his life, if playing for us and for some reason we did not get promoted.

Lambert is in the best form of his life and he knows it.

Lambert is fitter than he has ever been which is thanks to Nigel.

Why would we sell Lambert to Newcastle who are a myth when it comes to being a big side.

Rickie will stay at St Marys.

Talk Sport could not predict the rising of the sun correctly.

I wont be losing any sleep over it.

Another clueless post. The evil meeeeja making it all up again.

A story like this is no benefit to the frigging newspaper or "media station". Do you really think the Sun are going to sell thousands more copies on the back of a sentence on Ricky frigging Lambert. Even though it's one sentence in that paper I tell you now they will have got it from somewhere. From a conversation with an agent, or someone connected with the club (either club), from an off the record chat with Pardew at a reserve game, something, somewhere. It's not just made up. I know people don't like to hear it, but it will have come from somewhere. That somewhere may well be a poor source, or someone with an objective, but it would have come from somewhere.

And, it's utterly naive to think "the only people who benefit" are the evil newspapers. Stories like this a seeded to the newspapers by agents as part of the long game of contract negotiations, used by football club as second hand PR to the fans, used by managers to pressure their chairman to release funds, probably used by chairmen to get managers to agree to signing a players they want but the manager doesn't (Ronaldiho to Blackburn), used by players themselves to engineer moves away. Plenty of parties benefit from the press machine.

I'd stop calling yourself Professor if you really think little tit-bits like this is just evil newspapers serving their own ends. There's a hell of a lot more going on that you know.
