David McGoaldrought...

I got that one wrong then. After he left I said he will become a top Championship striker and told people on here to mark my words.

Oops.

Still plenty of time left. He does has some talent - it takes talent to score 50 goals in a season, even if it is only at reserve level - I just think the situation he's been in at both clubs is all wrong for him.

Another arrogant tosser who is a direct decendant of Humpty Dumpty!
Except all the kings horses and all the kings men probably wouldn't try putting him together again.Getting a million quid for him, considering the money troubles we had back then, must be considered one of the best bits of business we've ever done.

I'm not his biggest fan and was always annoyed by his appearence of running through mud (lots of effort but no speed) but he clearly wasn't and isn't as bad as many of you are making out he scored plenty of goals in our relegation season playing for a terrible side in his first season as a first team regular. Yes he maybe a bit of an idiot but lets be realistic at least.

He'll struggle at Wednesday though, Megson has no idea what he's doing there and I think even Messi might fail to make an impact!

I don't get the hate for him, to be honest. Managed double figures in the worst Saints team in living memory.

Something I noticed watching QPR's strikers this week and watching bits of highlights with Rickie's goals.

Think McGoaldroughts' problem is not one of skill but simply that he isn't a very "intelligent" footballer. Rickie (and DC for that matter) seems to be so much "smarter" on the pitch and if you compare the two players DMG in his lifestyle approach just doesn't seem too sharp a cookie.

Watching the QPR strikers - (in a very simplistic manner in a bar without any commentary) all pace and power and coached to perfection but simply not that "spark". Simply think that is DMG's problem, he has the ability, can score goals but just doesn't seem to "get it" (life & football that is).

Similar "football intelligence" jibes were made about Theo in his early Arsenil days whereas Oxo was deemed to have a good footballing brain (but a dopey Dad),

So maybe the "hate" is more disappointment. DMG should have been much more, he had the ability, but just comes across as being "footballing & life-wise" - thick.

He can't cleanly strike a football. Never seen someone so incapable of it at such a high level of the game.

Exactly. I'm going to remember him for the player he was with us. A striker who found it difficult and made it look difficult to score goals. He may have got double figures that season, but I am struggling to remember another striker I have seen who missed as much when one on one, had such poor technique, looked as if they couldn't be bothered and generally found it difficult to control, run with and use a ball.

I feel sorry for Sheffield Wednesday, arguably one of the worst results in their history (losing 5 - 1 to Stevenage, who they probably never even dreamt they would ever play) and their solution is to bring in McGoldrick. They deserve a lot better.

I'd also like to know if we can have our money back from Notts County.

He made it worse I think after missing one away at Coventry when he said he would never miss another one!

Funny thing is I was even calling us to re-sign him last season as cover...his division is league one really.

I always knew McG would get slated and posted as much from the reports I used to write on the old site from youth and ressie games.

You could see his lazy gait would not go well with Saints fans that need to see that players try.

He had skill but just didn't have that turn of pace to get him away from defenders.

"The Emperor's New Clothes", best sums up him and most of the players in the set up that impressed Chris Iwelumo. To think there were some people who believed that people like him, Olly Lancashire, Lloyd James, Gillet, paterson ect proved that we were on the right track and the whole football world was watching us. Where are they all now?

What did you make of him back then Ron???

I watched him quite a bit back then as work was quite flexible and always thought he bullied his way through games and would be found wanting when he started to mix it with the "pros". I was also unsure about his appetite/desire along with his general demeanour.

I don't think his off the field "persona" which also impacted his on field performances help!!!

I also think he is still seen by some as a "reminder" of those dark days (and Lowe's continual talking up of him didn't help him).

Dmg was either the bravest or most stupid egotist in the team over those pens to keep taking them & then missing

Paul wotton missed his only pen for us against Watford but he hit it hard the way old pros in lower league football should dmg was a soft placer always in same place

Rickie & mlt place(d) with power

Has rickie missed one for us yet? Cant be arsed to trawl through t'internet

As I've said before I worked with someone who knew him and he said he would be out all hours the night before a game.

Bloomin 'eck, our coach last night was warning us not to be out too late before our Sunday away match. Stories get around so why didn't the club do something about it? I wouldn't have a late night before teaching my primary school kids let alone before a professional football match.

to be fair though, there were allegations that one of his bosses wasn't exactly the greatest role model in this respect

It might also be the case that being held up as the "next big thing" by certain inviduals at the Club and pressure being exerted on the then manager may have led Mr McGoldrick's already rather big ****** status to go in to overdrive!!!!!
