Viking Warrior Posted 15 September, 2011 Share Posted 15 September, 2011 Just been invited to the following. anybody else inspired by the following? I for one will not be attending Football Lessons for Business Wednesday 16 November 2011 In an age when club football is more of a business than ever before and talent is at a premium, the ability to attract and retain the very best people is of paramount importance. So, we've organised an inspirational session with one of the UK's top football managers. Sam Allardyce is currently the manager of West Ham United. He is widely acknowledged within the game as one of football's most progressive and forward thinking managers. Sam believes that by effectively nurturing the talent of individuals any game can be won.

Ken Tone Posted 15 September, 2011 Share Posted 15 September, 2011 So in spite of whatever massive salary West Ham are paying him, he has to moonlight too? Hard times.

Progressive in terms of using available technology, analysing opponents / performances and, maybe, player diet. He still lumps it up the park most of the time though....hardly progressive in the way his sides generally play.
buctootim Posted 15 September, 2011 Share Posted 15 September, 2011 I'd go. He's operated at the top in a notoriously cut throat business for a long time, and in a business which is full of stories and intrigue. Even if he doesnt enlighten you on the path to becoming a FTSE 100 CEO within 5 years, he'll be entertaining.
Crab Lungs Posted 15 September, 2011 Share Posted 15 September, 2011 Would probably be a good event; an intelligent, thoughtful professional from one of the most fast-paced and notorious businesses in the world.
JackFrost Posted 15 September, 2011 Share Posted 15 September, 2011 Allardyce is still only where he is because he is very good at how he deals with the fans and the chairmen. He's quietly very good at keeping out of the way of the finger of blame. There were still people discussing whether he should get the England job not so long ago His style of football is amongst the most regressive in the game
Deano6 Posted 16 September, 2011 Share Posted 16 September, 2011 He's paid to get results, not to play the most attractive football. At that, he has generally been very successful over a long period of time (in relation to expectations of course).
Sour Mash Posted 16 September, 2011 Share Posted 16 September, 2011 Would definitely go. Like him or not, a definite charachter and obviously got something about him. Surely more interesting than the usual boring, management conference?

Chin Strain Posted 16 September, 2011 Share Posted 16 September, 2011 (edited) He's paid to get results, not to play the most attractive football. At that, he has generally been very successful over a long period of time (in relation to expectations of course). Is he unusual in this? Aren't all managers paid to get results? Some get them playing attractive football, some get them by playing percentage, route 1 football. Ian Branfoot was one of the most successful managers that Reading had (up to that point). They hated him. Edited 16 September, 2011 by Chin Strain

rallyboy Posted 17 September, 2011 Share Posted 17 September, 2011 the irony of football thinking it has great business principles to share!..... This is little more than 'an evening with' dressed up by PR - there may well be some man management skills worth hearing about but let's not pretend football can teach us by example much else about running a normal business in the real world. And I notice that the star attraction is listed as 'currently the manager of' which gives the distinct impression that in the thriving world of football even this great innovator's fragile status could change at any moment.
