Football Lessons for Business

Wednesday 16 November 2011

In an age when club football is more of a business than ever before and talent is at a premium, the ability to attract and retain the very best people is of paramount importance. So, we've organised an inspirational session with one of the UK's top football managers.

Sam Allardyce is currently the manager of West Ham United. He is widely acknowledged within the game as one of football's most progressive and forward thinking managers. Sam believes that by effectively nurturing the talent of individuals any game can be won.

Progressive in terms of using available technology, analysing opponents / performances and, maybe, player diet. He still lumps it up the park most of the time though....hardly progressive in the way his sides generally play.

Allardyce is still only where he is because he is very good at how he deals with the fans and the chairmen. He's quietly very good at keeping out of the way of the finger of blame. There were still people discussing whether he should get the England job not so long ago

His style of football is amongst the most regressive in the game

He's paid to get results, not to play the most attractive football. At that, he has generally been very successful over a long period of time (in relation to expectations of course).

Is he unusual in this? Aren't all managers paid to get results? Some get them playing attractive football, some get them by playing percentage, route 1 football. Ian Branfoot was one of the most successful managers that Reading had (up to that point). They hated him.

the irony of football thinking it has great business principles to share!.....

This is little more than 'an evening with' dressed up by PR - there may well be some man management skills worth hearing about but let's not pretend football can teach us by example much else about running a normal business in the real world.

And I notice that the star attraction is listed as 'currently the manager of' which gives the distinct impression that in the thriving world of football even this great innovator's fragile status could change at any moment.
