Mario Licka

I went to see PSG Vs Stade Brestios On Sunday night and I was surprised to see Mario Licka on the bench for Brest. They gave big spending PSG a real game and were unlucky to lose 1-0. Had me thinking that for over a year Licka wasn't anywhere near the first team squad in a Championship side but yet he's now playing for a French Premier league side who looked decent.

He was horribly underused for us. Was at least as good as some of the sh*te that played duing his time here and at least showed some desire when in the team.

Oh, and cue the obligatory picture of his better half............

Lol I refrained from mentioning his better half. I'm of the same opinion as you. I always thought he was decent. Nigel Pearson was our only manager who seemed willing to give him a chance in our side.

Problem was that he was a flair player in a lightweight team on a downward spiral. He was a decent player all the same and reckon he would do a decent job if was in our current squad.

I agree with what you say but he signed in 2006 when we were on an upwards spiral. George Burley just never seemed to rate him even after signing him.

What an easy life - paid to warm benches round europe and have a fit missus.

He has hardly been a bench warmer since leaving us, 58 appearances for Banik Ostrava (13 goals) and over 30 appearances for Brest, plus 3 full international caps for the Czech Republic, would suggest that as usual Burley was wrong.

Just looked on his website and he still speaks highly of his time at Saints and the fans.

Plenty of photo's from his time here from the gallery. Ocean Village might be somewhere on the med ! Assuming of course they were not taken there of him in a Saints shirt.

Seems a good bloke.

Always thought he was a pretty useful player. Perhaps a bit of a lightweight, but good with the ball. I'd certainly rather we had him playing than some of the dross like Viafara, Euell and Wright who littered our midfield. Another player who I think would have done very well under better management.

I always liked Mario too, and am in the group that think he was under used by Burley.

If memory serves me correctly, he appeared to be the stand-out player for two consecutive pre-seasons only to then not get in the team once the season started. Madness!!

Burley wrong? Surely not? Instead he played Wright and Idiakez - the latter was a superb player when younger but could barely run by the time Derby offloaded him. Mario would have been comfortable in this team with either Cork or Hammond alongside him. Mario did well when Pearson gave him a chance and but for our precarious finances he'd probably have got a new deal.

Still with our current four CMs available to pick from we can only be happy Saints fans these days!
