What trainers do you all wear?

Current:

Favourite:

How many do you own?:

Photos would be good.

Nike Lunar Elites (2 pairs)

Nike Air Span 8

Nike LunarGlide +3

Nike Air Triax TCs (getting on a bit now)

I must own 12 or 15 pairs of trainers, I must have owned a couple of hundred (or more) since I started running at 5 or 6.

Didn't always have trainers though, plimsoles and spikes used to serve before the invention of Adidas Roms.

Favourites ? unusable now, a pair of Adidas Marathon 86s, think you can still get them in Eastern Europe though.

Its important to have a hobby ;) Oddly Ive just bought a washing machine with a dedicated trainers washing programme....

Running shoes should never be washed in the machine. EVA is in fact a very viscous liquid and washing it at any consequent temperature will cause it to harden and become useless. Of course yer average Polyurethane based trainer can be machine washed.

Aah. New info, thanks. Mainly thought it would come in useful for washing the kids canvas plimmies and deck shoes.

Washing plimmies? what ever happened to just daubing that chalky white liquid stuff onto them the evening before PE lessons.

Anyway all those of you who have ever had a pair of Nike trainers will know they smell of cat's **** once they've become wet just one time.

Regardless of the obviously mockery I’ll no doubt receive, it’s difficult for me not to make a contribution to this thread. As you’ll see below, Window Cleaner is not the only trainer geek that frequents this forum!!!!

In answer to the questions……

What trainers do you wear:

Lots, all adidas of some sort

Current:

Depends on mood, weather, what I’m wearing, if I’m driving or walking or likely to be stood about, etc

Favourite:

This is far too complicated a question for me to give a simple answer as I have different favourites for different scenarios dependant on factors highlighted in the above mentioned ‘Current’ answer. For example, in the winter, if I were going to the football I’d go for something like one of the more recent ‘Rom’ silhouettes, as these have thick soles (useful when stood on cold concrete) and they also have good grip (useful if it’s wet and slippy). However if I were driving I’d go for something with a thin sole so I can feel the pedals better, also useful as my car has small peddles that are close together, so maybe I’d choose the ‘Paris’ or ‘Melbourne’. Naturally if I were just trying to show off and impress other people into their ‘trabs’ I’d go for one of my rarer pairs, maybe my ‘Koln’ or ‘brussels’ from the 80’s, however this is far less likely these days as I very rarely go out much, making it all the more ironic I have so many pairs of trainers

How many do you own:

I have just under 90 pairs at the moment, this does not include my running shoes which are just normal saucony runners, I don’t count any of these.

Photos would be good:

Dog, I hope the photos below are up to a high enough geek standard for you to be appalled that there really are people sad enough to own so many pairs of trainers and who also have time to put them in piles or spread them on the floor to take photos of them. In my defence I’d just moved into the flat and put the racking together so I thought I’d take some pics before I put them all in the racking, however even I can see how futile an excuse that is and what a total nerdy geek I am.

Running shoes should never be washed in the machine.

This is of course equally applicable for adidas trainers dating back to the 80’s and earlier, but for very different reasons. I’m sure you don’t all need me to tell you about the fact that the glue ‘back in the day’ was of a lot lower quality than can be found these days, plus age causes a deterioration in its quality and as such, washing them in water any hotter than warm could result in the soles coming off of the shoes completely (I’m sure you all knew that).

Collecting trainers is weird.

Well I'd not say that I actually collect them, all those that I have I've bought to run with, true there have been a few busts in the lot, totally useless for running, full of gimmicks. There were years (long long ago) when I was actually good enough to get a few free pairs (Asics and Mizuno when they were starting out in Europe). Anyway all my running shoes have memories attached to them and when they're knackered for running well they're OK for gardening and shopping.

Trainers make my feet smell, even without running. I also never pay more than absolutely necessary ie sale items. Used to love my old green flash dunlops.Very impressed with the collectors esp the pics. In Brighton yesterday I saw a pair of Borg's, original bag + certificate mmmmmmm. Don't expect you kids to remember them though.

I'm concerned about your obsession with Adidas. Have you never been tempted by another manufacturer? Would you ever consider it? Would it make you feel dirty?

Have you been tempted/would you ever consider supporting another football team? I have no idea why I prefer Adidas, just been that way for years and wouldn’t deviate from that now.

Spud, you are not alone, although mine are stored in their original Adidas boxes.

Spezials in every colourway I can find!

Your Koln and Tahiti's look in good nick.

The Koln are old and rough but the Tahiti’s are in mint condition. I keep the boxes as well, I just don’t see the point in having the trainers, but keeping them tucked away in boxes

Collecting trainers is weird.

You are weird, collecting anything is weird, I don’t understand why people want signatures of famous people, collect stamps, coins, football programmes, etc, it’s all weird really when you think about it. Anyhew I don’t ‘collect’ trainers ;) I’ve just accumulated loads over the years as I like lots of different trainers. That said, I would agree I am weird, but for many other reasons

Spudgun, absolutely class collection there. Haven't seen anything like it. It seems like you have loads of pairs of Dublins?

Ah-ha, to the untrained eye that would seem the case, however I’ll raise the geek level a bit by saying that I have an original pair from around the early 80’s, two pairs of the 2003 version (I ruined my first pair wearing them to Glastonbury), a pair of the 2008 version and finally a pair of the 1/500 size? anniversary version.

Well I'd not say that I actually collect them

I don’t say that I collect them either mate, that doesn’t stop everyone else saying I do!

nice collection - i have an original pair of 'made in france superstars' on ebay at the moment but fear i am asking too much for them. i had over 50 pairs of superstars at one point. fav's are a pair of white, blue/red pair of bungerts but recently getting back into gazzles'. rom, samba super and campus you also can not go wrong with. also have a few pairs of converse all stars and a pair of onisuka tigers but it's adidas that do it for me.

puma suade/clyde are also classics worth a mention.

nike's are soulless and cultureless yankee rubbish and they are for loosers!

Spudgun. Impressive collection you have.

However, I would also state that you have a rather severe case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder! I mean, just look at all those boxes, all neatly arranged, all with the labels facing out! That's the sort of organisation undertaken by people with boobs, or men with OCD! Then there's the collections of trainers, all the trainers on their sides, are the same foot, all pointing the same way!

I imagine it's the same all round your house!

Good observational skills and well spotted! Yeah you’d be correct with that assumption to some extent, I start off with good intentions, the picture of the racking was taken after I first put them all in after I moved into my flat, they’re not quite as uniform now, but still close enough. All my t-shirts are in colour order moving from one shade into another colour.

But it’s mainly only storage I maintain this tidiness. I can’t keep my kitchen tidy at all, my bedroom is always a mess and my lounge area has boxes and paperwork scattered across the floor.

Coincidently I was having a conversation yesterday about OCD and Autistic type tendencies (the main different being autism is something people are born with, whereas OCD is developed, usually after some sort of trigger event).

I used to live with a girl who worked with autistic people. She used to say that we all have these tendencies to a lesser or greater extent, I guess I sit a bit higher up the scale than most people, but not high enough for it to be a problem or very noticable. I do have some odd tendencies of these type, I have to have my car stereo volume on an even number, if I’m buying something like a bar of chocolate I will always pick up the first one I focus on, not the one at the front, when I take a mug off the mug tree to make coffee it’s not a random selection, I pick the one I focus on first. :spaz:

Not noticeable? Really?? :)

FTR - Brooks GTS 11th Edition. The box has been binned and I do not have a dedicated storage unit or units for them.

I had the original hydroflow version of the GTS,Brooks gave them to me to try, trouble is the fluid envelope wasn't really strong enough at the joints and it leaked, filled in a report and they corrected it pretty quickly.Ran London in them though, ended up

with sore feet and fluorescent green socks.

What a collection, Spudgun. I doff my cap to you.

I've only got around 15 pairs of Adidas at the moment, 2 pairs of New Balance and a few pairs of Superga's. I can only aim to have a collection as half as impressive as yours one day.

Oh and Spudgun, if you're ever looking to sell some, drop me a PM. ;)

Can't beat them in the summer with a pair of shorts on and as you said, very comfortable. Going to treat my new pair to a couple of days in Oslo as well this weekend.

Notice you tie the laces in the pics, and some are cross laced. Personally I go for the conservative look. Laced straight over and tied making sure the knott is hidden (holes before the top left blank) so they are slip ons. Top tip - i get a lighter and burn the lace where I cut it off.
