Verbal Kint Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Is anyone else getting slightly worried by what we have seen so far this season? I fear the centre back positions are going to be our undoing this season, as i'm not sure we have one let alone two who are capable of playing in a side aspiring to achieve promotion. Perhaps i'm over reacting but Jose has been far from impressive so far after an outstanding year last year
The Kraken Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 No, I'm not worried. He is still a class act, and will prove so this season. It must be especially difficult for him to command a brand new defensive unit when he has played a total of 0 games with any of his other defenders in those positions. I would say that he needs a series of games with whoever is going to be his central defensive partner though. And Cork is clearly no right-back, hopefully Richardon will have receovered from his injury by Sunday.
Raging Bull Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 IMO he's very much a confidence player, whilst all last year he had RJ next to him like an immovable rock, this year he's needing to think too much about what his partners doing. Lord Duckhunter Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 I thought this Saturday . I really thought he would be class this season, but he hasn't started too well. I'm hoping it is the new partnerships and once things settle down he'll be fine.
ant Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 (edited) I've been pondering this too, but the main conclusion I've come to so far is that though he dominated most attackers in League One the quality of target man was clearly much weaker on the whole (the biggest positional gulf between the two divisions?) Plenty of ex-Prem and big lump style strikers in the NPC. I don't believe it's necessarily that he's playing worse or struggling, rather that there is more of a natural balance now. I think a lot of us (as a direct result of the past year or so of consistently winning football matches) have forgotten what it's like to be under real pressure during games. Of course there will be players that get the better of Jose this season, but he's still a quality centre back and plenty good enough for this level. Colbury Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Found his level IMO. Class above in league 1. Average in this league.
Ken Tone Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 I thought this Saturday . I really thought he would be class this season, but he hasn't started too well. I'm hoping it is the new partnerships and once things settle down he'll be fine. I still think he is class. The problem on Saturday is that he was drawn out of position covering for his full backs
rallyboy Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 we've been spoilt for a year or two, regularly whacking five past a few weak teams who have tried in vain to outplay us. It's tougher this year for all the players and one or two are still finding their feet - as far as Fonte goes the disruption at the back has been the major factor, and I thought Jos did well going out wide to cover a couple of times. That said, we are doing pretty well for a team that has suffered injuries and hasn't hit top form - there are a lot more positives than negatives to dwell on. One of the things I do like is that we are no longer the one team that everyone wants to beat and they save themselves for it and give everything. We had the madness of Rochdale admitting that they all but sacrificed their next home game just to put up a massive physical show against us. In this division I don't see any small club regarding us as their cup final, except maybe one little minnow.
Turkish Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 I seem to recall people saying this time last season he wasn't as good as when he first joined. We haven't had a settled back 4 all season, and has had 3 seperate partners in 6 games. I let you experts draw your own conclusions.

wild-saint Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Class act without a doubt. I am terrified that should we lose Fonte to a long term injury we are proper buggered and will ship lots of goals. Remember the saying "Goals win games and Defences win Championships". Playoffs with fonte and mid table without.
beatlesaint Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Phew, thank God its not just me then ! I said to my old man Saturday I didnt think Jose had been as good this season and the reply I got was "well he's up against better players isn't he?" I think the point made about not having a steady influence like RJ next to him is a very valid argument.
Thedelldays Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 instead of playing against BWPs at the very best... fonte now has to play against people that have prem experience..real power and pace and some with european/champions league experience.. no wonder he is not as good
S-Clarke Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 He's obviously not going to look as good against players like Derbyshire, Nugent, Miller etc. I think we've been used to him gliding through games with us over the last 18 months, but then again dealing with the likes of Sam parkin, Odejayi isn't as tricky - and he made it look lioke a doddle. I also think the argument about his partner being a fair one as well. He seems to play better when he's got a ''beast'' of a CB next to him, which is what i'm hoping Jos turns into. (he looks quite a unit tbf). Still a bit mugged we missed out on Gorrks for whatever reason, as he's exactly the type of player Fonte thrives alongside. JustMike Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 He is a class act, not worried at all!
Saints foreva Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Personally think he's started the season well. Him and Radhi were a good partnership last season, especially at St. Mary's. It'll be interesting to see if Adkins prefer's Jaidi to Seaborne, Martin and Hooiveld.
sfc4prem Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Hopefully Radhi's still got 'it'. Looked dodgy pre-season, so maybe he's losing his legs a bit as time progresses. We as a team need a new dominant CB, as does Jose. Maybe Jos will be that man, who knows. Fonte won't look as good until he has a regular CB partner and regular starters in defence. Plus, as has been said, he's playing against tougher strikers now. Of course someone of his talent would look miles and miles above in class when playing against players of the calibre of Odejayi. simondo Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 i thought he held the whole defence together on saturday, i thought hosveld look way out of touch, cork was played out of position, and fox spent most the time up the pitch Jose is class & pls get well very soon DS we need you, is all i have to say..... benjii Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Fox and Fonte were the culprits for the two goals but Fonte generally did a lot more good than bad stuff. Everyone makes the odd mistake. He will be fine this season.

Fan The Flames Posted 13 September, 2011 Share Posted 13 September, 2011 I thought him and Martin looked good against Leeds, same height and the movement and set pieces seemed very well drilled.
