StDunko Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Went on a stag do there a few months ago, had a great time. The Reeperbahn is seedy, but there are some good bars around if you look closely enough. We found a great little rock bar playing live music each night. I'll try and remember the name of the bar and post later if I do. Also went to a live gig in an undergound Gothic cavern type place. Unfortunatley I had had a few beers and can't remember the name of that place either. Will ask some of the guys I went with and post again. Some great food and beer too, kebabs are taken to a whole new level and become a respectable meal in some of the turkish diners. I would avoid the weird boiled white german sausages though. The "Munchen Beerhaus" selling white or dark beer in 1ltr glasses served by busty barmaids in traditional dress was also a highlight.
SimonC Posted 13 September, 2011 Share Posted 13 September, 2011 lurking Bmth fan again... Hamburg is ace - went there for my stag do back in 2006 - and amazed that it was never mentioned as major stag venue, so felt like a bit of a trendsetter (although I know its been a weekend venue for yonks) Highlights - 1. No UK stag do's and just german hen nights! 2. Friendly locals - and bars open all hours. Or saturday night was from 6.30pm-1.15pm Sunday 3. Fishmarket - huge warehouse by the docks - really busy and the main time is Sunday from 6-11am. Beer stalls, Karaoke, smoked eel for brekkie!! 4. Beachbars on the dockside Amazing place, you'll have a great time. Our hotel was on the reeperbahn, which isn't that bad..although the Artic Monkeys 'sun goes down' was made for Hamburg. No pace like it in this country..London 24 hour city? yesh right! Oh I want to go back now!

Reeperbahn is great fun with a real mix of bars, clubs, sleaze and uber-sleaze. My main 'tip' if you like is to try not to do the classic Brit abroad tactic of going out on the **** too early. In places like Hamburg people don't go out til late, if you go out early it'll seem dead and you'll be wasted by the time it really gets going --> Do something during the day, chill out late afternoon/early evening, go for something to eat around 8/9, get on the beers after that. Concur with that whole-heartedly - Brilliant place In my rugby playing days, we toured there ( 20 odd years ago now) - Stayed at a hotel on the Prerdmarkt if my memory serves me correctly - About 10 minutes walk from the Kleine Freiheit/Reeperbahn. Recall an underground car park frequented by "ladies of the night" - Just take a walk around there if its still around - You don't have to buy but can get plenty of attention for free until they realise you are not interested, move on to the next "punter" and another tries in their place. Great fun at the time for a youngster!
Barney Trubble Posted 14 September, 2011 Share Posted 14 September, 2011 I had a great time there. If you want cheaper beer (away from the posh places) but still full of life, go past the Hotel Monopol and turnleft. Monopol is on the Reeperbahn - it's expensive on this street. Tickets you get from fanland which is on the St Pauli website. i think the bar that the St Pauli fans drink is called 'Timmys Bar', it's kitted out with lots of celtic memorabilia, due to their close links. It's worth a drink on a matchday but can get lively, if you don't like smoking then don't go in there as it'll take your breath away. Technically Hamburg is a non-smoking place but they're not that officiousor strict (well not when I was there anyway).
xerox Posted 14 September, 2011 Share Posted 14 September, 2011 never been to hamburg but when i consider the difference between the uk and europe when it comes to nights out it makes me realise how sh1t this country is. bars close to early, few bars cater for middle age clientle or those who want a more relaxed scene, the cost of drinks is a joke, food is poor (unless you spend >£10 for a main course), service is awful (please can we have table service like the REST OF THE WORLD rather than put up with the bull**** of trying to get served at the bar), hygine is terrible (try having your staff wipe the table and remove the empty glasses when customers leave instead of chatting behind the bar and expecting the next customers to put up with it), toilets are disgusting (do landlords not inspect these areas and do basic things like ensure there is toilet paper/soap or even a lock on the door - in some pubs Alex/Gobblets these issues go on for years)and restricting just a few bars to late opening means all the p1ss heads end up in the same place so trouble is enevitable, and people who just fancy staying out later end up going home because they don't want to be in an atmosphere of fear and voilence (me). it called customer service (customer, you know, the people who pay your wages). Sour Mash Posted 16 September, 2011 Share Posted 16 September, 2011 Been a couple of times and its a blinding place for a weekend on the beer. Just stroll around the various back streets of the Repperbahn and there is plenty to see and do. Its a proper drinking city, so lots of pubs, a fair few of which open up on a Thursday morning and don't close again until Monday evening. Shouldn't be too hard to get St Pauli tickets. I know their ground has had a fair bit of work on it over the last few years and it depends who they're playing. I'd suggest dropping them an email and getting tickets bought as soon as possible. Agree with all of that. I want table service in a place which hasnt got sticky tables and carpets or smells of wee. Its possible, though rare, in London but most provincial cities are a total loss. If you like live music it would be worth a visit. http://www.prinzenbar.net/
