Gemmel Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Following on from the 9/11 thread from a day that changed the world, I was thinking what were the top 5 world events that have occured in my lifetime. Given the diversity of ages on here, it will be intresting to see who has been around for what and also what people conso as the most important. This isn't about your wedding day or the birth of your first child, but world events that have affected us all (Negatively or positivey). I suspect that my list could change on any given day, so before you all shout me down for not including some momentus occassion, like the end of the cold war etc. bare that in mind. As a 41 year old, in no particular order; 1) 9/11 - I think that speaks for itself. 2) Aids - No specific event or date, but as a child of the eighties, this new disease, that would kill us all if we weren't careful 3) Financial Meltdown - that we have all witnessed and has impacted all of our lives, one way or the other. 4) IRA ceasefire - From the continual threats and murders and never believing it could be resolved, to ultimately getting there. 5) Apartheid - The break up of apartheid and a real sense of "right overcoming wrong"
buctootim Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Are we including Big Brother evictions in this?
Dimond Geezer Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 1) Man on the moon - I'm too young to remember (I was 2 at the time) 2)Live Aid 3)Death of Diana - Didn't affect me, but a lot seemed upset about it. 4) 9/11 5) Berlin wall and the genaral fall of communism in Europe 6) Interweb - although not really an "event" as such, which is why I snuck it it at the end.

scott_saints Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 The Gareth Gates v Will Young Pop Idol final was one to remember.
ecuk268 Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 1. Landing on the moon 2. Saints winning the Cup Final. 3. The Internet 4. Cuban missile crisis (remember someone at school telling us we'd all be dead before we went home). 5. John Lennon's death.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Don't really know, Berlin Wall came down when I was about a month old. 9/11 obviously, nothing else really seems in the same league. I guess some of the Royal Family sh*t.
keithd Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 I is 43, the events that remain in my mind for one reason or your mother are (in no particular order)... 1. 9/11 2. Death of Diana 3. "Cold War" betwixt US and USSR. Seemed almost inevitable in the early 80's there would be a nuclear strike on somebody, there were even tips on how to protect yourself on TV 4. Berlin Wall coming down 5. First Iraq war. Watching a cruise missile flying down the road on TV made me realise that wars are fought diffently than what I was used to seeing in WW2 films and documentaries
HK_Phoey Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 I am also 43, 1) 1969 Man walking on the moon, (although only 1 year old at time) 2) 1990 Berlin Wall coming down 3) 2004 South East Asian Tsunami, living in Singapore at the time have a lot of friends in Thailand. 4) 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami as I was in Tokyo at the time. 5) 2001 9/11
miserableoldgit Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 (edited) 9/11 Kennedy Assasination Moon Landing Cuban Missile Crisis Collapse of Communism (Berlin Wall) Actually, thinking about it, the death of John Lennon had quite a profound effect on me being a teenager in the 60`s so I`ll have 6 if it`s allowed. aintforever Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 1. Schneiderlin scored 2. 9/11 3. Berlin wall fell down 4. End of Apartied 5. The Internet
View From The Top Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 1. 9/11 2. 1st Gulf War (as I was there) Falklands War (family and friends served) 3. Mandela being released 4. Boxing Day Tsunami 5. Berlin Wall coming down I really should have put Diana's death on the list as it was such a major thing, one of those "where were you when you heard" events but the gratuitous grieving made me want to puke.
Verbal Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 I can do quite a long list just for the US, but the top three there would be: 1. The assassination of JFK (yes, I remember where I was...) 2. The resignation of Richard Nixon (I heard it live on my first trip to the US) 3. 9/11 (which was very inconvenient)

Saint-scooby Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 No order 9/11 Diana Moon landings Space shuttle "first one that went bang" Derek Wood and David Howes "left a long lasting bad feeling" I could add Hungerford Dunblaine Lockerby Chernobyl Five mile island Falklands Berlin wall Kuwait invaison and following war keith Moon Mountbatten 76 FA cup Iraq Black Monday 87 storms Claus scores
Viking Warrior Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 1 Death of Churchill 2. Turkish Invasion of Cyprus and the events leading up to it in 1974 3. Mountbatten and warren point 4, 9/11 5 christmas Tsunami 6 assaination of Robert kennedy
badgerx16 Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 1) the rise of the Solidarity movement in Poland - the first step on the path that culminated in the fall of the Berlin Wall. 2) Chernobyl 3) Six day war - so much geo-political fallout as Israel becomes the dominant military power in the region 4) The Iranian revolution that overthrew the Shah - a focus for Islamic fundamentalism thereafter. 5) The Russian invasion of Afghanistan - put Bin Laden into a position of power as the CIA armed him to the teeth
Trader Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 End of war in Vietnam, yanks running away (strategic withdrawal) Suez crisis Kennedy assassination Collapse of Eastern bloc communism 2007-2009 Wall Street debacle (still ongoing) I suspect that the current Arab struggles in many countries will be added to that list in the future.
Joensuu Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Depends on your perspective really. In 100 years’ time, the passing of Diana or the IRA ceasefire will be footnotes in the history books. I'd warrant, the top 5 events of my lifetime (to date), will eventually be considered to be: 1) Rapid (and unsustainable) increase in world population. 2) Rapid (and unsustainable) consumption of world's resources. 3) Rapid (and unsustainable) increase in global temperature. 4) Development of rapid, affordable, public global communication (internet, satellite transmissions etc.) 5) The continuous cycle of shifting world power: (Rise of China (2000-present); Rise and decline of the USA; Collapse of Communism (89/90)).
jjsaint Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 I would say two very big ones were left off: 1. The assissination of Rabin in 1995, IMO the death knell for peace in the Middle East. 2. Pakistan's acquisition of the bomb. The instability of Pakistan worries me more than Israel, N Korea or Iran having nuclear weapons.
alpine_saint Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 9/11, Falklands, Live Aid, 1976 Cup final, 1981 Headingley Ashes Test
Special K Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Don't want to repeat some of the above, but add Balkan War (particularly the genocide at Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo) Glasnost John Lennon murdered Tiannaman (sp?) Square Falklands "conflict" Rugby World Cup 2003 Frannie Benali crosses halfway line
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Can't believe some people have put Diana being killed. 1. 9/11 2. Invasion of Iraq 3. Berlin Wall coming down & end of cold war 4. Release of Mandela and end of Apartheid 5. SE Asia tsunami
rpb Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 9/11 Kennedy Assasination Moon Landing Cuban Missile Crisis Collapse of Communism (Berlin Wall) Actually, thinking about it, the death of John Lennon had quite a profound effect on me being a teenager in the 60`s so I`ll have 6 if it`s allowed. This (but substitute John Lennon with Buddy Holly).
Colinjb Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 (edited) In chronological order (From 1984 on): 1) The Chernobyl Disaster 2) The Fall of The Soviet Union (I'm not going to say Communism, there's still plenty of it out there.) 3) The end of Apartheid 4) The Yugoslav civil wars 5) 9/11 and the subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.... and: 6) The Tamil Massacre at the end of the Sri Lankan civil war.... Almost ignored by the world's media but utterly horrific. I would also hope that the end of dictatorships in North Africa/The Middle East (E.g. Egypt, Libya, Syria and Bahrain) and the rise of Moderate Democratic Islam in those nations will soon be something to add. Edited 14 September, 2011 by Colinjb
rocknrollman no2 Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 1-Man landing on the moon(remember watching it at infants school and everyone saying we will be living on the moon in the next 30 years). 2-Elvis dying(this resulted in the radio playing lots of 1950s rock n roll, which lead to my love of this music). 3-Falklands war(even though we had fought in conflicts since ww2,this was actually happening on our tvs and when the sinking of HMS Sheffield was announced,i remember the room full of people where i was being stunned into silence). 4-Berlin Wall coming down(this lead to the end of the cold war, something i didnt think i would see in my lifetime). 5-9/11(for obvious reasons).
Hamilton Saint Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 1. England win the World Cup 2. men walk on the moon 3. Chernobyl 4. fall of the Soviet Union 5. 9/11 And the death of John lennon hit me pretty hard.

Micky Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Memories: Man on Moon Warrenpoint & Lord Mountbatten Falkland Islands Lady Di 9/11 Some because of their obvious global impact and some because I was in some way 'associated'. For instance, on the day of the Warrenpoint / Mountbatten attacks I was in an operations room monitoring radio networks and heard it unfolding first hand - probably the bleakest day of my life.
dubai_phil Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Meeting DubaiPhil and Tiger on the 18th at Paultons last week. Jeez you must have been ****ed. It's still only two weeks since my knee Op & I ain't even allowed out the house at the moment unless it's back to the Hospital. Paultons was some 17 weeks ago. Now be sensible for once and don't spoil a serious thread
SuperMikey Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 At the tender age of 19, I can claim to have lived through dozens of world-changing events. I suspect we will see dozens more before I die in 10 years time. The world population is rising rapidly, I think we'll encounter quite a few more problems with that in the next decade or so.
Kingsland Codger Posted 15 September, 2011 Posted 15 September, 2011 Assassination of JFK Moon Landing First Oil Shock Fall of Berlin Wall and subsequent liberation of the Eastern Bloc 9/11 The Moon Landing is an odd one. Clearly it was a Huge World Event but it didn't have as much a long-lasting impact as, say, the US defeat in Vietnam.
