Cocaine - Premier League player named tonight

To be fair I wold be surprised if its just one player. Bit of a shame if only one gets singled out but no doubt it will soon be followed with others that get found out.

Cocaine and Pot seem far more socialy acceptable these days and many people with money see it as just part of a night out and not doing any harm. Footy players with bags loads of money would no doubt be mixing with plenty of people that do this kind of stuff so it wouldnt be hard to get involved.

Presumably it's not someone currently playing. Surely they would have failed a drugs test and been banned, so I reckon someone who has all of a sudden fallen "out of favour" and hasn't been getting a look in for the past year or so.

Isnt the dispatches thing going on about how people have got around the drugs testing or got away with not being tested for 2 years or something?

Joey Barton tweeted something the other day about the dispatches thing on tonight. Saying he had never seen anything that they are aledging so was interested in seeing what they come up with.

Who is that Hull player who suddenly departed the 1st team for unexplained reasons?

I thought charlie only stayed in the system for a couple of days making it easy to avoid detection (unless a random drugs tester turns up at training) unlike hash which stays in the system for much longer.

Not sure to be honest. Think they do urine samples for tests which makes me think that results wont stay in the system for very long. Blood tests I would of thought have traces in the system for longer. Will be interesting to see what Dispatches think they have come up with tonight though.

Not always in urine.

Hair will last months, but is not used in football.

I get involved in drug testing for work. Loads of people fail hair strand testing after getting through urine tests. People thought Britney was going mad when she shaved her hair...

Concateno Tricotech are the main testing company. There website is quite informative oh these things.

Most class A drugs are out of your urine in 72 hours.

As Patrick Bateman points out, THC ( cannabis ) will stay in your system for ages.

From a "not getting caught on a drugs test perspective", you're actually better off doing hard drugs over a Bank Holiday than you are having a spliff every night.

Personally, I don't like drug testing in principle. Assess their suitability on how they do their job, not what they do on a Saturday night. If someone has serious problems, you can spot it straightaway.

That said, I did once work for a company which completely failed to spot that one of its employee's was an utter coke fiend. During the day, and in the office.

egg : do your tests also look for excessive alcohol consumption?

Yes, but due to the cost we test for specific drugs. You pay per drug category, ie amphetamines etc. Alcohol is another category.

The testing is so advanced now you can usually go back up to six months and test individual months within that. You can also use body hair if someone does a Britney or reaches for the bleach.

Alcohol is normally tested by liver function or carbohydrates deficiency testing though, cos its cheap. Neither is perfect and can be "gotten around".

Elvis Hammond too. Fulham player, 2003 failed a cocaine test, 6 month ban.

Lee Thorpe (Rochdale, 2008 ) failed a test.

Everton, Forest, Tranmere have all had positive drug tests too, as had two lower league clubs.

Lloyd McGowan (Crewe, 2004 twice and 2005) failed drug tests.

Shaun Newton, West Ham, failed a test on matchday, 7 month ban.

Richard Sadlier took performance enhancing drugs in 2001 without getting caught, admitted on camera, and had his best season (in his own words). Wasn't tested, infact only tested once in 7 years.

Pompey had most drug tests abandoned in the PL (eight), Swansea had most in CCC (twelve).

I'd like to see performance enhancing drugs allowed for the 100 metres. Just to see how fast they could go! I'd be fascinated to see if they could actually get significantly faster because of it. Fine lines with the diet/supplements/energy drinks anyway maybe. Or Bolt and his nuggets and chips diet.

It's already been done, by Ben Johnson.

Well, who was it?

Garry O'Connor.

Thats one of them. Alex McLeish said he needed an operation and was going to be out for 3-4 months, in reality he failed a drug test (cocaine) and had a 2 month suspension. FA and Birmingham covered it all up.

That. Along with:

Sorry to be dim, but what do you mean by "abandoned" drug tests?

The test team were due to conduct testing on the players, but 'for some reason' the players were not available:

"The programme also discovered that between April 2007 and August 2010, 240 drugs tests had to be abandoned because testers turned up at training grounds but players were not there. The clubs involved included Manchester City, Liverpool, Fulham, Everton, Newcastle, Swansea and Crystal Palace."

In Pompeys case it was probably more a case that they couldn't find the training ground because, eerrr, they don't actually have one...!!! ;)
