whelk Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/article2025420.ece Found this when trying to look for Mateja Kezman (crap Chelsea forward) Bit harsh on old Claus (No.50) although must agree with No. 1. Impressive that we have 4 entries -Claus, Quashie, Carlton Palmer and Ali Dia. Others Saints players but not listed against Saints (lazy research?) - Dowie, Hurlock and Mark Dennis (clearly the author knows fck all to include Dennis -one of the best full backs we ever had) Apologies if already discussed previously - was published in 2007.
dubai_phil Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Carlton Palmer is very debatable. He was for 90% of his career awful, BUT he did have a good season for us in '97/'98 and was mentioned in some papers as an outside candidate to get back into the England Team for the WC. I think you'll get a lot of stick about the Claus issue, he was a good footballing CB in his prime. Unfortunately for me I will NEVER forget the haunted look in his eyes as he came out on the pitch at Nott Arf in THAT televised match in our relegation year. If ever a player was not mentally ready to be on a football pitch it was him that day. Dennis blossomed with us, but in his days at Brum (I think) he was all over the place footballing and mentality wise. He was however a classic example of how LM managed to get some players to perform.
a1ex2001 Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Stupidly harsh on Claus nobody who is that crap would have appeared in as many premier league games as he did, seemes like the writer wanted to use that quote because it's classic Strachan so stuck him in regardless of ability the same is probably true of Carlton Palmer. The list is terribly written and misses out on one or two spectactular disasters that cost far more than our Claus, how about Sean Dundee 2 million quid 3 liverpool appearences no goals, Erik Meijer a fans favourite at liverpool despite managing 2 goals in 24 appearences or Ibrahima Bakayoko 4.5 million quid and 4 goals in an Everton shirt.
stu0x Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 I wouldn't get too hung up about it. It's obviously a hastily cobbled together irreverent fluff piece (the print media's equivalent of an 'and finally...'), filled with the appropriate number of spelling, grammar, and factual errors to prove it. 30+ of those players would arguably be nowhere near a properly researched list.
Huntingdon Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Surely if that list was updated, Anthony Pulis would have to be there A professional for 8 years, has already played for 11 clubs and made a total of just 44 appearances!

Kezman isn't actually in the list is he?. He failed at Chelsea although a lot of that was down to being chucked on the bench immediately and hitting the woodwork with every other shot he did have when he came on. His goal scoring record in the Dutch league (105 goals in 122 appearances) is better than Van Nistelrooy's and Van Basten's. He hasn't done much in the last couple of years but his record for Fenerbahce from '06 to '09 (20 goals in 46 appearances) wasn't that bad either. He's now 32 and just signed for BATE Borisov in Belarus according to wikipedia Materazzi at 37 in the list WTF? Edited 12 September, 2011 by JackFrost
Golac's Cunning Stunts Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Remember this being discussed on here a few years back. Crap journalism. The guy spends most of his time writing about Scottish football and probably should stick to that.

The list should be updated, and then Claus would no longer get a mention (of course he is not one of the Top 50 anyway, together with Killer he formed one of the best CB partnerships in the PL). Also very harsh on Dowie and Hurlock. No, today we would probably be close to having the Top 3, Ali Dia, Anthony Pulis and our very own Mr Nice Guy Tommy Fourpast.
Danbert Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Started reading the article, which is in reverse order. The first 5 entries (numbers 50-46) all have a Saints connection. Perhaps the journo is a Saints fan?

VectisSaint Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 But then if accurate with the likes of Forecast and Pulis, it'd be pointless as they haven't been heard of Think you'll find a lot of people have heard of Pulis, though they may initially be confused with his old man. As for Tommy Fourpast, was highly regarded at Spuds, has not fulfilled the potential that he must have showed, given that he cannot even get a gam in non-league these days.
JackFrost Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 And David May is in there. For being an underrated, extremely consistent part of two title winning strong defences. Why? Jeez I didn't even spot him. Clueless journalism
jjsaint Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 I'm sure I've seen Benali in a similar list, which shows it's all down to opinion...
Benali Saint Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 I think 6 or 7 of them shouldnt be on the list.
SNSUN Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 My West Ham supporting colleague regularly brings up Ali Dia. I respond with a cheap Marco Boogers shot. Hilarious transfers for the neutrals.
Trader Posted 12 September, 2011 Posted 12 September, 2011 Jimmy Melia! Yeah, obviously a full England international with 432 appearances for Liverpool, Wolves and Saints, scoring 91 goals from midfield was a terrible player.
teamsaint Posted 13 September, 2011 Posted 13 September, 2011 dont believe what journalists write..believe in what you think for yourself. From that list you could build a very decent PL team, maybe lacking a bit in class up front.
Minsk Posted 13 September, 2011 Posted 13 September, 2011 Kezman isn't actually in the list is he?. Ruffo Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Claus was class when paired up with svenson. Awesome defence. Quashie was also good when he played for us. Good work horse and tried hard to keep us up. Certainly not fair to imply he pulled the teams down. Poor journalism. Well off the mark
Crab Lungs Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Djimi Traore, Mikael Nilsson, Andreas Jakobsson, Jordan Henderson, Jean-Alain Boumsong...
colehillsaint Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 Most out of his depth performance in a saints shirt since about 1992; Lee Todd - left back brought in by Dave Jones I think. Ali dia may have been worse but he wasn't really on long enough to be certain. Honourable mention - Patrick Colleter
whelk Posted 14 September, 2011 Author Posted 14 September, 2011 Yep, Kezman is playing for BATE in the Champs League tonight. I'm watching it on TV now. Blimey I'll wager there wasn't many others who pressed the red button for that one! Plzen v BATE Borisov or Barca V Milan, or off course Arsenal or Chelsea.
a1ex2001 Posted 15 September, 2011 Posted 15 September, 2011 Honourable mention - Patrick Colleter He was proper garbage I remember a game aginst Newcastle where we were 2 or 3 goals down very quickly with all of them being directly atributable to that waste of space and to think someone got him in to replace Benali, ridiculous.
Cricketphilly Posted 16 September, 2011 Posted 16 September, 2011 And David May is in there. For being an underrated, extremely consistent part of two title winning strong defences. Why? And the Champion's League 1999?

Though he did maim a Chelsea player, who was it?
