Nigel Adkins' Appointment - One Year On

Saint-Armstrong

Recommended Posts

It is one year to the day since Nigel "came into the building" and there's been no looking back since, now seems a good time to reflect on the stats:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Games Managed = 53

Won = 37

Drawn = 7

Lost = 9

Goals For = 111

Goals Against = 45

Goal difference = +66

Goals Scored Per Game Average = 2.1

Goals Conceded Per Game Average = 0.9

Win Percentage = 70%

Seasons:

2010-11 = 2nd (Promoted)

2011-12 = 2nd (Season Ongoing)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

With all the broken records along the way, including our best start for 76 years, 12 straight home wins, and only 2 defeats at St. Mary's under his leadership (one of which was against Manchester United), he has pushed the team that Pardew assembled to the next level, got out of them what Pardew could not and then added to that quality.

We look fitter, faster, stronger and united and play an attractive and expansive style of football, we entertain the crowd, and we are winning games.

I no longer give up if we go 2 down, I always know we can do it, when we went 1 down to Forest, and went behind at Leicester, I never once panicked or felt like giving up.

What a great first year we have enjoyed under Nigel, and I hope we will be seeing many more with Nige at the helm.

Thank You Nigel Adkins.

(Also a huge well done to Nicola Cortese and also Les Reed, who I understand brought Adkins to Cortese's attention, having led courses Nigel was on. If Les does nothing else, I thank him for giving us Nigel and the great season we had.)

And the Saints Go Marching On, On, On..... Together as One!

Good read...can be forgiven for attributing the Wilkins era to Adkins but has got in to the spirit of what's happened.

My understanding of the Pardew breakdown in the relationship with Cortese (unsure about the other rumours) was that he felt that Pardew never bought in to the whole picture and felt that he was too good for the club. I guess we'll never know but even if it was just that they couldn't get on then that's reason enough and it's changed the course of our recent history - and more miraculously it's changed our expectation and ambition.

I enjoyed the League 1 experience, much to my surprise, I much prefer the direction we're heading now. Happy Anniversary Nigel...!

He's done a magnificent job so far, and I for one am very grateful we have got him as our manager.

I don't always like to draw too much attention to stats, but his win ratio so far is quite superb. Who would have thought that within a calendar year we would win 7 out of every 10 games we played? Not me!

The other great thing is that we have a got a proper team together. Pardew certainly deserves credit as well for bringing in the likes of Lambert, Fonte etc, but NA seems to have taken them one step further.

Have to be honest that I was sceptical of NA's appointment - the timing seemed wrong. Also he hadn't managed a big club with big expectations before and it seemed a gamble. I'm happy to be proved wrong though. Last season I think he achieved what was required, no disrespect to him, but whoever came in would have had promotion as an absolute necessity but he's done it.

It's this season that has so far impressed me though - he's really coming through on his promise of fast attacking football and most of the time it's a delight to watch. The inventiveness of the play can be amazing - it's not formulaic at all and at times you have to feel for the opposition because how on earth would you set up to stop us? It seems this division really does suit us much better and while I still think we'll end up around 7th - 10th that would still be a good season especially considering the entertainment.

Well done NA

An effusive paean of praise for Nigel's first year by a poster who joined in September 2010. Hm...

Agree though - the boy dun great.

What difference does it make when a poster joins for FFS?

I'd me more concerned about using personal images as an avatar.

Yep, totaly agree with the OP. Plus he is well aware of the risks in playing players who are carrying knocks. Saturday a case in point: Richardson tweeked a calf and Harding jarred his knee late last week and Adkins made the call not to play either. As he said in the interview we have a number of games coming up and the risk of further injury and weeks out is not worth the gamble. Great to hear that he takes the long term view and even better to think we have the players to cover. Very sensible chap our Nigel!!

Some of us were on the bus from day 1. It is nice that many more of you have finally jumped on.

Others who frankly might have been unsure for various reasons, took the sensible stance of "wait and see". Now, as that is a position condemned by some who point out that this is an internet forum and therefore people are allowed to go off at half-cock based on hearsay, opinions of fans from other forums, what they feel in their water, etc, those who called it right are entitled to a little gloat. However, those who said that it would not go well, that we were wrong to get rid of Pardew, they have been proven wrong by events and might learn something from this the next time around when somebody new comes in.

Viewed as progress thus far, it is really a quite incredible record and deserves applause. Although we are off to a record-breaking flying start to the season in this division, it is still early days. I hope that we can continue at the pace we have set so the last remnants of doubt are laid to rest.

Indeed. I have no problems admitting that I was sceptical of the appointment, but more than anything I thought we'd made a mistake letting Pardew go. Very glad to be proven wrong.

I still think Pards did a very good job for us (his forways into the transfer market have proved to be largely excellent and his signings still provide the spine of our team), but there's no doubting that NA has taken our form and our style of play up that extra few notches since his arrival.

Great post and a great article... Old Nige is even having an effect on my own mentallity as his ever positive remarks absorb into my big spongy brain...

He is a fantastic man and a magnificent manager, he has worked extremely hard since he came into the building. He has got the fans, players and staff all pulling in the same direction and we are together as one, we are playing attractive football and we are polishing those diamonds!

Top work Nige! I hope Nige and Nico can take us to the PL, and I hope they both commit for the long, long term at SMS!

This would be a prime opportunity to re-introduce the 'Ask Adkins' quotation bank!

This ^^^

I was gutted when AP went. When Nigel arrived I didn't really know enough about him to get excited by his appointment. When we got promoted last season I was still of the opinion Nigel had done well but getting out of league one wasn't a massive achivement (I know others felt different) and that how we did in the champ was the important thing.

This season Nigels proving what he's got and I'm very happy about it as we're exceeding well beyond my expectations. I'm pretty sure NA is going to become a saints legend TBH.

His cliched interviews can be a bit annoying, but its a darn sight better that listening to George Burley slurring his way through excuses, or Rednapp moaning about the players being crap, or Jan Portvliet/ Mark Wotte trying to sound like Steve Mclaren.

I just hope that people are still positive if we hit a rough patch. Its likely that it will happen, and I can see quite a few on here turning on him, which in my eyes would be a shame.

The expectation levels have risen so sharply since the start of the season that I think this is a genuine concern; many people's predictions of where we are going to / should finish are going up every game, whether those expectation levels are realistic or not, only time will tell.

I still very much believe that reaching the playoffs would be a fantastic achievement, although I still have to remind myself of that after every game, there was a part of me that was inwardly critical of the side from Saturday before I realised that I would have bitten your hand off for that result at the start of the season. We're currently very, very reliant on Lambert and Connolly being on form and injury free, with no Barnard to call upon as an option we're looking very light in that department, and that would be my one criticism of the transfer window that we didn't strengthen there.

Well done NA

Nigel Adkins is without doubt one of the best things to happen to Saints. Tactically he has got some things wrong along the way, but he has recognised the problem and acted positively. What impresses me most is that he is wringing every last bit out of our current set up.

Leicester showed the way to stop us, two banks of four close enough together that Saints had difficulty passing their way through, then attack down the flanks or the ball over the top to expose our defence. The trouble is, it's one thing saying, another doing and I don't believe 60% of teams in this league have the quality to make it work. Adkins is a work in progress and it would not surprise me for him to come up with a solution should this reach problem proportions.

Was a little skeptical at first of the decision to let Pardew go and then also the appointment of Adkins. However, there are very few decisions that have been made by either NC or NA that you could say have been wrong, including the appointment of Adkins himself. Nigel has proven himself to be a very, very astute all-round Manager and has clearly changed the whole dynamic of the team and the team spirit. The results are there to be seen.

Unfortunately, there are a small minority who still don't get the bigger picture and I'm sure there will be an outcry of unrest if we lose on Sunday for example. It is true to say though that even the most ardent of doubters are now realising that there is something very special materialising at our club. The future at last is very bright indeed.

First, I am 100% behind Nigel, I love watching us play. I am delighted he was appointed (although the timing probably cost us the title and me personally over two grand...)!!

However, we were winning 53% of our games before he arrived.

He jumped in the bus and hit the accelerator. To be fair to the previous incumbent, he turned the bus around and pointed it in the right direction...

So you're saying an article about Nigel Adkins having been with us for a year since his appointment, doesn't sit within a thread called - Nigel Adkins' Appointment - One Year On?

Clearly unfair. A great deal of research went into starting this thread.

Can't add any more 'cos am on the phone.

I went to MK Dons & saw Nigel's first game in charge. What a difference between then and now. That night was really depressing. We were dumped in the bottom 4 and another relegation seemed on the cards. That night was soooo depressing.

The amazing thing is that the team in that match looks very similar to the team these days. Davis, Harding, Jose, Seaborne, Butterfield, Hammond, Morgan, Lambert, Connolly. The only noticeable absentee was Lallana and on the other hand Puncheon was also playing.

What Nigel has achieved with this same bunch of players is quite frankly amazing. Long may Nigel be our king.

He's done a great job, the team was lost when he came in.

He is full of cliches, but he is always so positive and that is infectious.

Hope he goes down in history and gets the support to take us up and keep us there (which will not be cheap)

i really hope he goes down in history as well...

What amazed me was how quickly Wilkins could make them so crap.............

I was embarrassed at the reaction by some to his appointment..some were ridiculous with the negatives...

even as late as the final run in, so many (mostly those against the club in general) were sure we would be lucky to make the playoffs and still do not rate him

his record speaks for itself...simple as that

brilliant, BRILLIANT manager for us.....he is on the up, the club is on the up, the players he signs are on the up...brilliant all round
