ulstersaint Posted 11 September, 2011 Share Posted 11 September, 2011 Agree with previous posters and both fullbacks left too much space for overlaps; both Forest goals came through our RB position; Butterfield would have been better choice at RB; Cork must play centre midfield; early days for Fox (great free kick to Ricky) so let's give him time. Wildgoose Posted 11 September, 2011 Share Posted 11 September, 2011 It was Harding at LB (wasn't it?) who was poor that night, though has generally been good this season. Ah, yes, you're right, just saw on the OS that it was Harding (who must have had an off night). I saw on another report that it was Dickson but that was wrong. Saint Thomas Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Hope I'm not making myself look stupid by having mistaken him - haven't seen replays yet. For their first goal, fox just left the goalscorer as he ran on, far too slow tracking back. For the 2nd, he was a yard or so behind the rest of the defence, which they exploited as he played their two guys onside. Great tackle on miller, good crossing, good dribbling, average passing, but simply abysmal positioning - got to hope the coaches can fix that quickly, or he'll cost us plenty of goals! If they do, he could be very good. Judging just from one game of course!
polegategavin Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 This! very unimaginative, **** poor passing, too many long balls and caught flat and way out of position far too often so - Derbyshire gave him the run-around and more or less was responsible for both their goals. Harding is better than this by miles. I', tempted to say another graet signing by our scouting team in the footsteps of N'Guessan, Forte, Stephens. They sure know how to pick 'em! Amazing how this game is all about opinions and how they can differ. This was my first game of the season and I took my nephew with me. We both picked Fox out as a good performer. His passing was very assured, and both he and Cork provided an outlet in the first half to collect the short pass from Kelvin. Or moved to drag the Forest players away for Jose or Jos to receive the ball. However, our formation was not right, it was exposed to their wingbacks and we were constantly leaving space between the wide midfield area and the full backs causing both our fullbacks either being dragged too narrow or more commonly too far forward exposing them to the long ball over the top into the corners, where we were continually exposed. A good team stops this at source rather than cutting out all the crosses, as even the bast teams will struggle to prevent the cross every time. NA needs to review our tactic, as it works going forward but exposes us defensively. Whoever had played at full back on saturday would have been criticised as they would have been exposed as described above. It needs sorting as we will not win by scoring more than the opposition every week. It was also Fox's first full game and he will improve as he gels with the team more. corky morris Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 I dont think he had a good game, but that does not make him a bad player. A couple of things should be considered. He was playing alongside a centre half who was also making his debut for Saints having not played for ages. The Forest right side is one of the strongest in the league. The Polish lad can play, he is an international. Gunter IMHO is the best right back in the champ & is also an international. Both Guly & Lallana were left with little space as Forest played with a very high line which meant they were going inside to see the ball which left him exposed. I was listening to the radio the other night coming back late from work & they were saying how Leighton Baines is one of the most improved players in the prem as Moyes had been working on his defensive capabilities. Once Fox has been with us a while & played alongside the same players I am convinced he can improve the defensive side of his game. Well lets hope so anyway.......as £1.8m is a lot for a player! Good post I would say though that we've played that way all season (at least at home) and haven't struggled that much. Now it could be forest are just a better standard of opposition or it could be the make shift nature of the defence (or both) but yesterday was one of our worst defensive displays in a while (that I've seen) Edited 12 September, 2011 by doddisalegend

Couldnt agree more regarding Cork in Centre mid wasted at right back he has been immense in the middle of the park & we missed him in there. I thought Fox looked ok going forward good delivery as you said I was worried with his defending he got done several times when 1 on 1 it is early days for him & he will get better. Thankfully our class offensively prevailed this time!
OldNick Posted 12 September, 2011 Share Posted 12 September, 2011 Gunter was one of Wales most effective players against England the other night and he was up against Fox, as well as derbyshire. both are mobile and of decent quality
