Saints 3 Forest 2 - Reaction

St Chalet

I must say I am more concerend about Fox's idea of being a left back than I am about the performance of Jos in the middle of defence.

Burnley fans had it spot on about his defence lapses, the number of times he was almost in a different post code to the winger was alarming.

Those who criticise Harding would do well to take note of his replacements performance.

Its a good job Fox is quick cos he needs to be. The second left back we have signed (with Dickson) that looks a much better bet for left midfield.

Still his distribution and attacking play looks good so if NA and co. can sort him out defensively he will be very very good.

Good win from Saints.

We had periods where we looked great on the ball, but also had moments where we looked very poor.

Nottingham Forest put us under a fair bit of pressure in the 2nd half and on another day probably would have scored from one of their attacks. Felt they had a decent peno shout turned down, one of their players was dragged to the floor by our player at the back post, thankfully it wasn't given.

The last 10 or so minutes (especially the injury time) were a joy to watch. I have no idea where he got the 5 minutes from but I was certain it would be heart in mouth stuff. The lads kept the ball well and Forest hardly got a sniff.

Davis - Did a decent save at the beginning of the 2nd half, claimed some crosses but had a few dodgy moments. 6/10

Cork - Much better at CM but still had an alright game. 6/10

Fonte - Done well in the air against Miller, also put a couple of good challenges in when it mattered. 7/10

Hooivlet - Good debut imo, was looking to pass it out of the defence which is promising. 7/10

Fox - Bit hit and miss this game, think he will be a good signing once he settles in. Positioning was questioned a bit today. 6/10

Guly - Good ball that created the chance for Connolly which set up the opening goal but a part from a few nice touches he didn't do much. He isn't a right midfielder, at times it seemed like he forgot he was player there! 6/10

Hammond - Battled well, had better games but looked much better when Chaplow came on. 7/10

Schneiderlin - I forgot he was on the pitch until his shot, he didn't do much. 5/10

Lallana - Will probably be disappointed he didn't score today, he started the game well but seemed to disappear mid-way through the game. 6/10

Connolly - Did well but missed a good chance just after there 2nd which I expected him to do better with. 7/10

Lambert - Fantastic touch, control and passing today which were capped off by three goals. Delighted for Lambert. 10/10.

Chaplow - Done well for the time he was on the pitch, kept the ball and battled. 7/10

De Ridder - Didn't see too much of the ball at his feet but won the freekick that set up the 3rd. I would like to see him start ahead of Guly next week. 7/10.

It's posts like yours which drag this site down because they're a massive knee-jerk, they're based on no real foundation as you weren't there to see the full picture. I was, and whilst we did look a bit jittery, it was nothing major to worry about. The full backs were a little shaky, but that will be addressed when we get Richardson/Butters back from injury - then we can put Cork back in his best position.

And by the way, my point about us just being promoted is valid and is not an excuse. Why people expect us to be beating teams like forest easily, whilst not letting them score is beyond me.

If anything today showed the versatility and depth of the squad.

Just got in . Cracking game of footy! Going forward we are a class act , in fact we are superb! At the back though is a different matter ......... Cork is wasted at right back and gives the back four the defensive cover that morgan doesant ........Fox and Hooivelds looked lost at times but will get better ............ some of our football was on a different planet at times and 2 2 at half time flattered forest ........ overall 3 points and roll on the saints machine!!

If I was a Forest fan I'd have come away wondering how the hell they didn't win that game, let alone lose it!

Second half they could easily have scored 5, and none of the numerous goalmouth scrambles ran their way.

Derbyshire is a diving little t@sser though, and I remember that trait from his Blackburn days.

I thought a lot of players looked very leggy as the second half went on, which surprised me as I think as a squad we're pretty fit these days.

I fully agree with #108 above re Fox; at times he was having to run 30 yards to get anywhere near his winger and this happened alarmly often.

Guly for me was superb today, the first two goals owed an awful lot to him, and he ran himself into the ground.

Also agree with the other comments regarding the 5 mins injury time; I don't remember any stoppages in the second half so that was a complete mystery.

It was also quite refreshing to see a centre-back who's less mobile than Jaidi; Wes Morgan tek a boo son!!

Christ, this place never changes, it's like bloody groundhog day. Same old faces with same old knee jerk reactions and in most cases without even watching the match.

No, I wasn't there either so can't comment on the performance, but you've got to be pretty small minded to be nitpicking after winning five out of our first six matches. Yep, it's obvious where we need to strengthen and maybe we should have done so before the window closed, but if the players won't come or we're being held to ransom what do you expect. It's great to see someone running the club responsibly after where we've been in recent times. I trust in Nigel to get things right, let's face it, hasn't done much wrong so far.

There is always room for improvement. Nothing wrong with applauding a win but recognising weaknesses which could cost us in future games.

Understandably weak at the back given they hadn't played together and Forest can feel aggreived not to have got something from the game. Our winning streak pulled us through and we saw out the game expertly at the end.

We need another mobile striker. If you don't present him with chances, Connolly doesn't do enough. Ricky was first class, the out ball, three goals and put real pressure on their defence. We didn't get Lallana on the ball enough, but I think Forrest earmarked him as the dangerman.

Really missed having Cork in the middle as Morgan was too anonymous against a strong Forrest midfield with Greening and Reid catching the eye. Fox was really poor apart from the cross for the third.

How many ex-Prem players did they have?? Great result, but we need some more quality in the squad - a central defender, a striker in particular.

Realy great win today had feeling we may struggle today to get a point, defense is a problem 5 againts in 2 games is not good, adkins has to look at full back situation surprised Buttefield not playing unless injured, Chaplow showed what we need when came on well done RL.

This is a tough league think all saints fans should get a grip on reality we are going to lose a good few games this season but will also win a load more

Adkins really earned his money today, changed the game when forest were in control.

hammond completely bossed the right hand side when he moved out wide, a superb display by him all day.He may not be the most skillful, but he sure knows what needs doing on a football pitch. Chappers made a big difference also.

As for Rickie, the sort of centre forward that Don Revie would have loved...and thats a compliment by the way !!

Nige does have defensive issues though.. getting back to a stable back four is the first thing.. the best defences are based on stability and teamwork.

Can't agree with people saying we were lucky to win. We dominated the first half but gave away two very sloppy goals - Fonte being hesitant on the first and Hoiveld allowing Miller to turn and play in a runner from midfield for the second. Under their own steam Forest did bugger all. Second half they played better and put us under pressure leading to a couple of scrambles in our box and a great save from Davis but we also created a number of chances - Fonte's header cleared off the line and Lallana denied by a good save. All in all I thought we created more chances, played the better football and deserved the win. Just got to cut out the soft goals that we've concede in the last couple of games.

Did I say there was? Not got a problem with differences of opinion or criticism, if it's constructive or well thought out. Unfortunately there are far too many on here who form opinions on the basis of very little knowledge and then state them as fact. Even a pin sticker will pick a winning horse occasionally, doesn't mean they know anything about horse racing.

Have to say that was one of the best football matches I have seen for a long time.

Two very evenly matched teams - don't forget that forest are loads of pundits favourites for a top six position, and I can see why. They played some great football at times especially the first 15 mins of the second half when they came out like an express train and we did really well to keep them out. After 70mins I would have settled for a draw as I think most people in St Mary's would have.

I also thought that the first two subs by mclaren worked in our favour. Miller really impressed me - everything you want in a striker - strong, good in the air, half decent touch and able to throw his toys out of the pram when he falls over in the box.

OK we had some enforced weaknesses at the back down the flanks but overall we just deserved to win. We put loads of preessure on them in the last 1/4 and apart from the penalty appeal which I couldn't see from the Chapel, I thought we just shaded it.

We are going to have many more really close games in this league and if we are still in with a shout of the top six come the end of April nobody will be happier than me.

Having said that - I have been so impressed with Saints so far this season. So far we have played five of the top rated sides - Leeds, Millwall, Ipswich. Leicester and Forest. None of them have made us look like new comers to this league and I think our squad depth will bode us well for the rest of the season.

I wasn't at the game. When Davis had the ball, how far up the pitch did Cork and Fox go? One thing I noticed at Leicester was that they went right up near the half way line, the central defenders split out left and right to receive the ball, and Schneiderlin came a little deeper for the ball. Just wanted to see if we did that again.

Because we've spent a f**king kings ransom comapred to some of the teams, thats why.

And my post is not "knee jerk". Our defense is getting progressively worse as teams work out how to play us.

I know it's a bit late after your post and no doubt you have all ready been put in you place but you really are a sad individual. " Our defense is getting progressively worse" are you for real. Did you actually look into why we put out the defence we did today before posting such crap?

I think I already know the answer to that, just the normal garbage from the resident manic depressive alpine. I sugest the admin team take the "saint" out of you log in name and insert "antisaint".

First game I have watched at St Marys this season so not going to say I am a regular to post comment on form but can only comment on what I saw today.

Cork, played well at right back, however the midfield looks better with him in it.

Josh H, 7 out of 10, looked ok and at ease with Jose, who played well.

Midfield as a unit were again ok, however for me they looked better when Chappers was introduced, gave us some drive and thrust, so fair play to our Nige for putting him on when he did.

Rickie, hatrick-hero.

I also have to say that the 15 mins of injury time, sorry meant to say 5 was probably our best passage of play, in terms of keeping the ball, which was very impessive at such a critical time.

As for forest, Andy Reid looked like a baby wearing nappies, it was a very bizarre sight, and was I the only one surpised to see McGugan on the bench for them. Ismael Miller is a thug by the way.

Special mention to the fan today who put up his brolly, for Steve Mclaren, very funny moment.

Even bigger mention to the players after the match, who took time out to sign my sons autograph book and his shirt, and have pictures taken with him, it was very refreshing to hear all the players take time out to connect with all the fans who were there, Rickie was especially good and certainly made my son's day as well as mine COYR.

Cork is no right back, but if Richardson and Butterfield were both injured, then someone had to play there

Schneiderlin was rather poor, but he tends to need a run of games

Hooiveld had a good debut

Fox will be a good player

We're doing OK. How can anyone be unsatisfied at second in the league the first season after promotion?

Just watched the match highlights on the Football League Show and that tw*t McLaren stated that when Derbyshire went down in the box, everybody in the stadium thought "penalty".

Well, actually, McLaren, they didn't. Your lot might well have crossed their fingers and hoped that a penalty would have been awarded, but everybody else in the stadium thought you cheating, diving bastard, Derbyshire. The referee was a damned sight closer to you and he called it right. Cheats.

Naturally, you're calling this that you should have got something more from the match because your job is on the line.

Never a penalty, a disgusting dive by Derbyshire. We deserved the win, two goals against the run of play for Forest. They bossed us in the second half until Chaplow came on, but we would have been robbed if they'd got a point. We've been the best team in the first 6 games considering Brighton have had easy teams to play.

Gutted I missed this one, but it was at the back of my mind when I was working today. Very pleased to get 3 points, Forest are a good side and the scoreline suggests they gave us a few problems at the back.

Injuries are an interesting one, we've got Richardson, Harding, Butterfield, Seaborne and Jaidi out at the moment. If any of them are out for more than a month (as Seaborne probably will be), I can see Nige dipping into the loan market.

What a game! My voice is totally gone after that one!

We started brightly but conceded a sloppy goal, for the next half an hour Saints looked back to their best with some quality passing and moving, when we went 2-1 up I was wondering how many we'd score...

Unfortunately Saints switched off and conceded before the break, it was coming really as for the last ten minutes of the first half we looked slow and barely bothered.

After the break it was more of the same, Saints starting slowly and only staying in it thanks to a world class save from Davis from a free kick. Forest really kicked on and looked a real threat going forward, should have scored one of their chances. A draw would have smiled kindly on us but up cropped Lambert to head in the third, and for the last ten minutes we looked comfortable again, such a topsy turvy game!

Fantastic game to be my last home game til' I'm back down here at xmas.

A very good summary, exactly as I saw it. We looked very nervy at the back and Forest certainly had their chances to have taken the match, but having heard from Adkins that Richardson and Harding both carried knocks, it was a valiant back to the wall effort from a defence where three of the players were not the usual ones who had experience of playing together.

About time Rickie got a st marys hat trick

Great subs by NA to play chappers lm & deano rm

Then to win play Lallana & de Ridder up front

Then to kill off forest just pass the ball around their box

Can see fox being a great threat from free kicks as opposition can't just plan for Rickie

Last season was very unsaints like with those clean sheets

Seriously? You think that? You've played Leicester which I'll give you but they have hardly been setting the world alight. Added to that Leeds, Forest and Ipswich who I think we can safely call "crisis clubs" given their starts and pre-season favourites for the drop Barnsley. I'd say we've both got off to great starts but you're still trying to keep up!

The game went as I thought it might -lots of chances and attacks looking better than defences. Forest conceded four last time out at home to West Ham, but they could have scored 4 or 5 of their own. The same could be said here.

I think the single most important incident in the whole game was McClaren taking off Miller. He was outstanding, running Fonte ragged and at the time of the substitution they were totally on top. Once McGoaldrought came on I knew we would win. What a crazy decision.

I don't think we should be worried about anything that happened in the game. They won't come much tougher than Forest.

Davis 6 One great save, kicking not his usual high standard, and some absolute madness that coudl easily have cost a goal. Got away with it.

Cork 6 I don't blame him for the goals at all. They may have come from his side, but a Morgan error and Fonte not getting tight enough to Miller were the real reasons. The game passed him by though and he didn't run it like he did at Leicester. Game called out for him to move into the middle and a right backto come on.

Hooiveld 7 won a lot in the air and very steady in posession. His inability to deal with one huge long punt towards the end of the game worries me - as that's his job - but other than thta a decent display. Seaborne has been better in recent weeks I might add, but happy we have him on that left side rather than the right footed Martin

Fonte 6 Miller bossed him and for once Fonte wasn't crawling all over the striker - and that cost us for one of the goals - Miller had it far too easy and could play a good through ball that led to the goal. Once Miller left he bossed McGoaldrought as normal.

Fox 6 The cross field balls might look nice, but was there any need and if you are going to do them get them right. He clearly is comfortable on the ball and classy in posession, but I thought he should have got a few more tackle in. He seemed reluctant to dive in, which is the opposite of what I was told he does. He got done in the second half but overall reasonably tight. Not sure he is a better defender than Dan but we'll see.

Lallana 7 started very well and did some of his usual brilliance, once delightful run and cross in the second half begged for a striker to get in the six yard box but Connelly was too knackered/slow. When moved into the hole was totally ineffective, not seeing the ball at all.

Morgan 5 Poor game by his standards. Just looked a little slow and gave the ball away a few times one of which led to a goal. He needs a good run in the side, but Cork is first choice right now.

Guly 7 more good stuff than bad, one crucial tackle on Miller saved us in the second half, but equally some ball watching and then asking for offside when he should be making up for his error showed his bad side. Boy was he ****ed off when subbed. He is getting fed up of being the fall guy.

Hammond 8 very strong running gave us some good options, usual solid passing game, just a five minute period when he and Morgan totally dissapeared

Connelly 5 Started brightly and his link up play with Rickie is great, but in the cold light of day he offered little threat other than the flick on for the goal. His lack of pace and power mean we miss out. He had a great chance to score but went near post, he is usually leathal in those situations. In the second half I thought he was totally ineffective. Should have been subbed long before he was. I am a big fan, I love how he works with Ricky, but I see room for improvement in that position.

Lambert 10 I'd of given him a 9 if he hadn't scored, but his all round game was outstanding. He was like a different player at times making sharp diagonal runs. He caused them all kinds of problems with his movement. That is not what he normally does. He did everything else - headers, link up play, but he also got in the box a bit more. Tremendous game, oh and he scored 3 lovely goals of course, the second was a brilliant team goal totally ruined on the TV coverage by only showing the end part.

Chaplow 7 sensible and good energy, kept the ball well

absolutely spot on, I was miles away and even I could see it was a massive dive. He had actually dived a few minutes before as well trying to win a pen (from a free kick I think) although far less obvious.
